Gymnast who sparked abuse inquiry into coach at elite US academy says she 'needed to speak out'
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Recalling the damage her now-arrested coach inflicted on her and many of her gymnast friends, Finley Weldon said she feels a sense of pride.
Free from the grip that Sean Gardner had during her years of training at an Iowa academy known for producing Olympians, Weldon told The Associated Press in an exclusive interview that she is among the few who survived his abuse and are still in the sport.
The 18-year-old is heading into her freshman year at Iowa State University, where she'll be a member of the Cyclones gymnastics team. She spoke with the AP on Wednesday, less than a week after Gardner was arrested on a child sexual exploitation charge.
'I didn't want him to take away anything from me, especially something that I love,' she said. 'None of the girls that I started with or went through the things that I did with Sean are still doing gymnastics today. So that's something I'm very proud of.'
She's also happy she's made a difference, in the same way gymnasts she admires — like Aly Raisman, an Olympian whose visceral accounts of abuse by Larry Nassar shined a spotlight on the trauma gymnasts went through and how authorities failed to curb it.
The AP generally does not identify victims of sexual abuse, but Weldon said she wanted 'my name out there because I was the one who did come forward.'
'I felt like I needed to speak out to stop it from happening to other little girls, so they didn't have to go through what I went through,' Weldon said.
'I knew it would just be a continuous cycle if nobody did.'
Gymnasts reported abuse to watchdog in 2022
The FBI said Tuesday it believes Gardner 'targeted children' while coaching at Chow's Gymnastics and Dance Institute in West Des Moines, and gyms in Mississippi and Louisiana where he worked dating back to 2004.
Gardner, 38, didn't return AP messages left on his cellphone before his arrest, and has not entered a plea to the charge. A public defender who represented him after his arrest hasn't returned messages.
Another former gymnast at Chow's, the academy known for producing Olympic gold medalists Shawn Johnson and Gabby Douglas, first reported sexual abuse allegations against Gardner to the U.S. Center for SafeSport in March 2022, alleging he fondled her during training sessions, according to an FBI affidavit.
That girl provided the names of six other of Gardner's potential victim, according to the affidavit. Weldon said she spoke with a SafeSport investigator about her abuse at the time.
SafeSport, a watchdog created after the Nassar scandal to investigate misconduct complaints, informed the West Des Moines Police Department about the allegations. It suspended Gardner from coaching or having contact with any gymnasts in July 2022.
The police department said its investigation was closed in 2022 when the initial accuser decided she did not want to pursue charges.
Weldon said police never reached out to her in 2022 but she's unsure whether she would have wanted to press charges then.
She said she came forward in April 2024 to West Des Moines police at age 16 after she matured and began to realize the severity of her abuse.
She praised police for doing 'an amazing job' keeping her informed about the progress of the case.
'It's definitely taken awhile, but I mean, even I didn't realize how many steps there would be to charge him with anything,' she said.
Police defend investigative efforts
Iowa investigators say they searched Gardner's home in May and seized electronic devices, which contained images of nude girls from a hidden camera Gardner placed in the bathroom of a Purvis, Mississippi, gym where he previously worked.
West Des Moines Police Sgt. Daniel Wade said Wednesday the department sought the FBI's assistance in mid-July when the case's 'scope started to broaden.' Asked why the department didn't involve FBI sooner, he said, 'We call the FBI when the time is right.'
Gardner is charged in federal court in Mississippi with producing visual depictions of minors engaging in sexually explicit conduct, which relate to the alleged hidden camera. Federal and state investigations remain active, and additional charges are possible.
Wade defended the department's investigative efforts over the last three years. He said investigators 'went as far with it as we could' in 2022, without a victim seeking charges and have been conducting a thorough investigation since receiving the new complaint in 2024.
Wade declined comment on whether investigators reached out to Weldon and other potential victims identified in 2022, saying only that police opened 'lines of communication with different people' that later paid off.
Weldon said she met with investigators Tuesday and they asked her to identify herself in an image Gardner allegedly secretly took of her in a vulnerable stretching position.
Protecting the 'male figure in my life'
Weldon said her goal since she was a girl was to reach the elite level in the USA Gymnastics Junior Olympic program for those who aim to compete internationally.
She said she started training at Chow's after her family moved to Iowa in 2015. She began taking private lessons with Gardner two or three times per week shortly after he joined Chow's in September 2018, when she 11 years old.
Weldon said she was struggling as her parents went through a divorce and her father was largely absent from her life. She said Gardner sought to fill that role by telling her she could tell him 'anything' and that he would always be there for her.
In hindsight, she said he was manipulating her in order to gain her trust.
Finley's mother, Julie Weldon, said she heard concerns about Gardner from other parents at Chow's early on and asked her daughter whether her coach had ever done anything inappropriate. Finley said she falsely told her mother no because she was protecting the 'male figure in my life.'
Inappropriate behavior progressed
She said Gardner began touching her inappropriately in 2019 during lessons, beginning with long hugs and pats on the back. She said his behavior progressed, and he began touching her butt during the hugs and requiring her to stretch for extended periods in positions that exposed her vagina and anus out of her leotard.
She said around 2020 he began touching her vagina while spotting her during exercises. She recalled once telling him not to put his hands there and he claimed it was an accident because her 'leotard was slippery.'
Weldon recalled reaching her breaking point with Gardner after a 2021 training in which he yelled and threw shoes at her, telling her she'd never reach elite status. She said she walked out and told her mom she wanted to quit.
She said many of her classmates quit or didn't return because of Gardner's conduct after the gym shut down during the pandemic. But while he made her hate gymnastics at times, she continued training when her family moved to Texas and then to Utah. She said she eventually proved Gardner wrong by earning elite status and a spot on a Division 1 team.
After news of Gardner's arrest, Weldon saw his jail booking photo in the AP story. She said she was struck by how much heavier and unkempt he appeared.
'He's definitely like gone through a spiral,' she said. 'I think he probably just had so much guilt built up in him that he kind of turned into that.'

Who will be USMNT's rising star ahead of World Cup?
Yahoo Sports contributors Christian Polanco and Alexis Guerreros highlight Malik Tillman and Diego Luna as USMNT rising stars to keep an eye on ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Hear the full conversation on the 'The Cooligans' podcast - and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, or wherever you listen. View more Video Transcript The World Cup is around the corner, obviously, right? Look, it's a little too soon, but maybe we should talk about the next rising star for the men's national team. I mean, look, the first name, especially now, where there's going to be a lot of expectations, and the players are in different situations this year leading into the World Cup, the players are in different situations in their own club careers. So, Malik Tillman is, I think, the one who's probably fighting for a starting spot in this World Cup squad, because I think some would say he maybe has one already, possibly. I think the last couple years, we were thinking about you know, MMA, right? Weston McKenny, Eunice Moussa, and Tyler Adams. That's what a midfield lock that seems like that would be the one leading into the World Cup. So maybe two to three years ago, that's kind of how we felt we had that strong midfield. And now especially with Eunus Moussa, where he is in his club career, and even Weston McKenny, just not being played in multiple positions. I still think he is probably starting to, yeah, but even though there's a little bit of shakiness with those players' individual club careers, I think this is an opportunity for Malik Tillman, who now is the number 10 at Bayer Leverkusen. There is going to be a huge responsibility, especially after, you know, he's going to be playing under Eric Ten Hag after Xabi Alonso leaves, who was nothing but incredibly successful with having the invincible year. I think there's going to be a lot asked of him. I think that in turn will lead to a bigger responsibility with the US men's national team. And for me, I'm going to say Diego Luna, mainly because of how well he played during the Gold Cup. The manager, seemingly Mauricio Pochettino, seemingly trusts that at the very least he's going to give it his all. And whether it's making a run or tracking back a bit more aggressively, you know, someone who we kept saying had that dog in him, you know what I mean? And he was a dog, and he was willing to fight. And he was willing to give it all, and he broke his nose. You know what I mean, he's willing to do whatever it takes. He seems like someone that I think Mauricio Patino trusts. Close

Miami Dolphins Stock Up/Stock Down: Patrick Paul flattens Josh Hines-Allen
MIAMI GARDENS ― The Miami Dolphins wrapped up training camp with a solid joint practice against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday, Aug. 21. The two teams will conclude their preseasons at Hard Rock Stadium on Saturday night, Aug. 23. Miami Dolphins training camp stock up/stock down Stock Up LT Patrick Paul ― Patrick continues to excel and to do so against notable pass rushers. On this day, he held his own against the Jaguars' Josh Hines-Allen, even throwing him down to the ground in one 1-on-1 drill. S Minkah Fitzpatrick ― Minkah had yet another training camp interception. He has stood out since returning and fills a big void in the wake of Jevon Holland's departure. The best part? Fitzpatrick isn't just a talented player. He's a player youngsters can model. Stock Down G Jonah Savaiinaea ― We don't mean to pile onto a rookie guard. But he had his hands full at times on Thursday. He will continue to work hard and surely will continue to improve. Just don't expect dominance and consistency immediately. RB Jaylen Wright ― We are hoping Wright's apparent lower-body injury is not too serious. But he did leave the field with trainers. The Dolphins' running back situation is concerning at the moment, with Alexander Mattison already down for the season. Fantasy Football: Tracking the latest injury news for top players as we get closer to Week 1
The 2025 NFL regular season is fast approaching and chances are you're preparing for your fantasy football draft. If that's the case, be sure to check out Yahoo's fantasy football draft kit for all the latest analysis. When it comes to fantasy football draft prep, being aware of all the most notable injuries is of the utmost importance. Yahoo analyst Scott Pianowski always says that injuries will happen throughout the season, they're inevitable — but don't draft into one before the season even begins. This tracker will be a helpful tool to make sure you're up-to-date on all the latest injury news from around the NFL before you head into your draft room. NFL preseason injury tracker Quarterbacks Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens — foot Overall Ranking: 26ADP: 21.5 Update — Jackson was forced to leave practice this week after a teammate stepped on his foot. The Ravens downplayed the injury and it appears to be nothing, but this is Lamar Jackson we're talking about, so it feels worth noting at least. Jordan Love, Green Bay Packers — thumb Overall Ranking: 110ADP: 116.1 Update — Love underwent a procedure to repair some torn ligaments in his non-throwing thumb last week and isn't expected to play until Week 1. He's been practicing this week and it doesn't appear that this will be an issue once the regular season gets underway. Similar to the Jackson news, it's worth noting given how important Love is to the Packers offense and some of the receivers you may end up drafting in fantasy. Matthew Stafford, Los Angeles Rams — back Overall Ranking: 158ADP: 126.6 Update — Stafford's back has been one of the bigger storylines in terms of injuries this preseason for fantasy football. The trickle-down effect it would have on top WRs Puka Nacua and Davante Adams has many concerned about drafting both of them as highly as they're projected. Well, Stafford was back at practice on Monday and is being considered both day-to-day and week-to-week by head coach Sean McVay. That doesn't really help us narrow down Stafford's status for Week 1, so for now, it's a wait-and-see type of situation. If we don't have much clarity by the time drafts start, the best way to approach this situation is be prepared; if you're going to take Nacua or Adams, have a backup plan. If one of them drops a bit from their ADP, take advantage of that (but again, be prepared). Have a contingency plan at WR if this back injury takes a wrong turn. Running Backs De'Von Achane, Miami Dolphins — calf Overall Ranking: 16ADP: 16.4 Update — Achane remains out of practice and was deemed day-to-day and week-to-week. It doesn't appear as if Achane will see action in the preseason finale for the Dolphins this week. But there's still plenty of time before the Dolphins face the Colts in Week 1 on Sept. 7. Head coach Mike McDaniel said the team is approaching Achane's practice participation in a "preventative" nature. So for now, all signs point to Achane being ready for Week 1, yet we're all proceeding with caution in drafts. Similar to the Stafford-Rams situation, if you're targeting Achane in your draft 1) have a plan and 2) look for value. If Achane's injury is scaring managers off, you may be able to get him at a discount in your draft. If that's the case, be sure to snag his backup or just have plenty of RB depth on your roster. Joe Mixon, Houston Texans — foot/ankle Overall Ranking: 122ADP: 71.6 Update — Mixon remains sidelined while on the active/non-football injury list for the Texans during the preseason. It's unclear at the moment if Mixon will be ready for Week 1. If that's the case, the Houston backfield appears to be wide open with veteran Nick Chubb, rookie Woody Marks, Dameon Pierce and Dare Ogunbowale all in competition for carries. It makes it tough to trust any of those names in fantasy until we get some more clarity. Mixon feels like an OK player to stash if he plummets in your draft; just add some additional depth at RB. Trying to figure out which of those other four backs would be in line to start if Mixon isn't ready for Week 1 might be difficult. But if Mixon ends up returning at some point early in the regular season, he could be a steal. Tyjae Spears, Tennessee Titans — ankle Overall Ranking: 127ADP: 129.5 Update — Spears sustained a high-ankle sprain in the Titans' preseason opener and was ruled out for the remainder of the preseason. He's considered week-to-week and his status for Week 1 is in question. With that news, it's bumped Tony Pollard up draft boards with less competition for carries/snaps out of the backfield if Spears misses any time. Julius Chestnut and Kalel Mullings are the other two backs on Tennessee's roster worth noting. Chestnut could get some run if Spears is out as the change-of-pace back behind Pollard. But expect the veteran to handle most of the heavy lifting. Najee Harris, Los Angeles Chargers — eye Overall Ranking: 166ADP: 118.2 Update — Harris is back at practice doing drills during training camp as we approach the end of preseason. We'll see if he can get back into shape and ready for Week 1, when the Chargers face the Chiefs on Sept. 5. That gives Harris about two weeks to get back into game shape. This should bode well for Omarion Hampton's prospects of beginning the season as the RB1 for Los Angeles. Hampton's ADP has risen to around 33.7 over the past week, which would suggest he's an RB1/2 option. There's a chance Harris returns and they form some kind of committee, although that may be tough if Hampton hits the ground running. Plus, the Chargers spent a first-round pick on the back. Either way, if you're eyeing Hampton early in your draft, be sure you're up-to-date on Harris' status. Wide Receivers Chris Godwin, Tampa Bay Buccaneers — ankle Overall Ranking: 109ADP: 99.3 Update — We got some clarity on Godwin's status going into the season via ESPN's Adam Schefter on Thursday morning. The Bucs plan to activate Godwin off the PUP List before the start of the season. The wideout still is unlikely to play until October, per Schefter. That would mean Godwin misses the first four weeks of the regular season (if not more). Rookie WR Emeka Egbuka is already being talked up big time if you're reading plenty of Yahoo Fantasy Football content. He'll have a real shot at being the WR1 for the Bucs if Mike Evans shows any sign of slowing down at 32 years old. WR Jalen McMillan is also worth a quick mention as he was placed on injured reserve with a neck injury. Jayden Reed, Green Bay Packers — foot Overall Rankings: 106ADP: 105.7 Update — Reed is out of the walking boot we saw during the Packers' preseason opener. But he's still not back at practice yet. This is another injury to monitor very closely, because if we catch wind that Reed is back at practice and in line to be ready for Week 1, it could boost his ADP quite a bit. If you can get ahead of that curve, it could mean you're getting a potential No. 1 WR on a good offense at a discount in your draft. Foot injuries are tough for any wide receiver but the fact Reed is out of the boot is encouraging. Because of all these injuries, rookie WR Matthew Golden is being talked up big time as a fantasy sleeper. His ADP is up to 113.2 over the past seven days and he's performed well enough in camp that even if Green Bay's receiving corps wasn't ravaged by injuries, Golden may in the conversation as the WR1. We know the Packers will spread the ball around and lean on RB Josh Jacobs, but Golden and Reed could be the primary pass-catchers along with TE Tucker Kraft. If that's the case, all of them appear to be strong values if the injuries subside. Khalil Shakir, Buffalo Bills — ankle Overall Rankings: 107ADP: 118.9 Update — Shakir went down with a high-ankle sprain at the beginning of the month and was declared week-to-week. The wideout hasn't suffered any setbacks in his recovery, which is encouraging for his status for Week 1. For someone who has the potential to be the No. 1 receiving option for QB Josh Allen in what should be a very good offense, Shakir is still going overlooked in drafts. If Shakir can shake off this injury, it would impact how we view second-year WR Keon Coleman, who is getting some hype as a sleeper/breakout candidate. Jauan Jennings and Brandon Aiyuk, San Francisco 49ers Overall Ranking: Jennings (83), Aiyuk (139)ADP: Jennings (104.3), Aiyuk (128) Update — We're including both Jennings and Aiyuk, though their situations are a bit different. Aiyuk, we know will be out until at least mid-season. Jennings is dealing with a calf injury and has a contract dispute. This has opened things up for Ricky Pearsall to start the season as the No. 1 WR while TE George Kittle remains the top receiving option for Brock Purdy. Behind Pearsall and Kittle — if Jennings can't get healthy — things become very murky. The Niners just traded for Skyy Moore because depth wideout Demarcus Robinson was suspended for the first three games of this season. If Jennings is out, the 49ers' offensive touches should be very condensed to Kittle, Pearsall and Christian McCaffrey. Right now, Pearsall's ADP is on the rise, up to 91.3 on Yahoo over the last week. He'll continue to be a strong value pick so long as Jennings is sidelined. Tight Ends Isaiah Likely, Baltimore Ravens — foot Overall Ranking: 187ADP: 130.4 Update — Likely underwent surgery to repair a fractured foot at the end of July and was ruled out for at least six weeks. So chances are Likely will miss the first few games of the regular season for the Ravens. Because of that, Mark Andrews doesn't have Likely breathing down his neck for snaps and targets in what should be a top offense in Baltimore. As a result of the Likely injury, Andrews will enter 2025 as the TE6 in Yahoo's rankings at the position. He's being selected around the 63rd pick in drafts and is an appealing TE target in the middle rounds considering his red-zone role.
