Star India Batter Departs For Duck On One-Day Cup Debut After County Flourish
Star India batter Tilak Varma's Royal London One-Day Cup debut for Hampshire ended in disappointment with a duck, but Hampshire still posted a strong score of 324/6.
Star India batter Tilak Varma's debut in the Royal London One-Day Cup in England didn't go as per plans as the youngster was dismissed for a duck while representing Hampshire against Glamorgan at Neath, although that didn't deter his team from posting a big score batting first.
Varma joined Hampshire earlier this year, marking his maiden stint in County Cricket in the UK.
In his four County Championship appearances, Varma notched up two hundreds and a half-century. But the start to his One-Day Cup stint has not been as smooth.
Having been put in to bat, Ali Orr and Hampshire skipper Nick Gubbins added 68 runs for the opening stand before the former was dismissed by Ned Leonard.
Varma walked in next but could last just three deliveries as he was caught by Asa Tribe off Leonard as well, departing for a three-ball duck. Watch the video here:
Hampshire soon found themselves at 81/3 before Gubbins and Tom Prest added 34 runs for the fourth wicket. After the latter was dismissed by Kiran Carlson, Gubbins and wicketkeeper Ben Mayes built a 141-run partnership for the fifth wicket.
Hampshire eventually posted 324/6 with Gubbins scoring 144, while Mayes contributed with a 55-ball 74. Glamorgan are yet to bat.
Since making his T20I debut two years ago, Varma has featured in 25 games, boasting a brilliant average of 49.93 and a strike rate of 155.
Varma has played four ODIs as well, but is yet to make a mark, with 68 runs at 22.66. In List A cricket, he averages 46.68 across 36 games, while in first-class cricket, he holds a brilliant average of 52 from 22 matches.
Varma is yet to represent India in Tests.

Turning it Pope's way: Aussie leggie keen on continuing good run
Though he played a pivotal part in leading his team to the final, Pope sat out in the final, considering the pitch conditions at the Karen Rolton Oval then. "The wicket didn't really spin a lot. Credit to our squad, we had got some very good fast bowlers. They decided to go with the fast bowlers on that day. All I wanted was that to be the right decision and we won the game," he said. He further explained his season where South Australia won both the Shield and the One-Day Cup. "At the start of the year we said the squad's going to win the Sheffield Shield, not just the 11 players. Just to be even named in that squad, that's a huge achievement for me personally. (With regards to what he did) I tried to improve my stock ball trying to make my leg-break an effective ball to get wickets. That probably was not the easiest thing. It took quite a while for me to get to a stage where I feel like on Australian wickets that I am spinning the ball away from the bat and getting a bit of shape in the air and bounce off the wicket. That's quite a small adjustment but quite a hard one to make. I spent a lot of time doing that," he said. Listening to India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja talk on spin bowling, Pope then switched his aim before his delivery. "If I could take one thing away from what he says, it is just hitting the stumps as many times as possible. He is one of the best in the world. I think that's probably been one of the things that I've been focussing on in all formats of cricket for the last 12 months," he added.

WI Vs PAK: West Indies Announce 15-Member Squad For ODI Series Against Pakistan
Last Updated: West Indies named a 15-member squad for the ODI series against Pakistan in Trinidad, led by Shai Hope. Romario Shepherd returns, aiming to boost their 2027 World Cup qualification. West Indies have announced a 15-member squad for the ODI series against Pakistan, with the three-match tournament scheduled to be played in Trinidad. The squad, led by Shai Hope, includes several young players who have been key for the Windies recently and sees the return of dynamic all-rounder Romario Shepherd. Shepherd is rejoining the West Indies ODI side for the first time since the series against Bangladesh last year. Eighteen-year-old wicket-keeper-batter Jewel Andrew, who debuted in ODIs against Sri Lanka last year, has retained his place after featuring in the ODI series in England earlier this summer. Left-arm pacer Jediah Blades, who earned his first cap against Bangladesh in 2024, has been recalled. Amir Jangoo, who scored a memorable century on his ODI debut against Bangladesh last year, also retains his spot after playing against Ireland in May. The West Indies are coming into the series following a 2-1 T20I series loss at home. Head coach Daren Sammy believes the series provides an opportunity to solidify their qualification for the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup. 'Pakistan presents a different test and challenge as we continue our push for automatic qualification for the 2027 World Cup," Sammy was quoted as saying. 'While qualifying is our immediate goal, maintaining a winning mentality and team cohesion is essential for long-term success. The upcoming matches against teams like Pakistan, who are ranked higher, provide crucial opportunities to earn valuable ranking points to improve our standing ahead of the World Cup," he added. West Indies are currently ranked 10th in the ICC Men's ODI Team Rankings, while Pakistan are positioned fourth, below India, New Zealand, and Australia. What Is West Indies Squad For Pakistan ODI Series? Shai Hope (c), Jewel Andrew, Jediah Blades, Keacy Carty, Roston Chase, Matthew Forde, Justin Greaves, Amir Jangoo, Shamar Joseph, Brandon King, Evin Lewis, Gudakesh Motie, Sherfane Rutherford, Jayden Seales, Romario Shepherd. view comments First Published: August 06, 2025, 23:13 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
