Star India Batter Departs For Duck On One-Day Cup Debut After County Flourish

Last Updated: Star India batter Tilak Varma's Royal London One-Day Cup debut for Hampshire ended in disappointment with a duck, but Hampshire still posted a strong score of 324/6. Star India batter Tilak Varma's debut in the Royal London One-Day Cup in England didn't go as per plans as the youngster was dismissed for a duck while representing Hampshire against Glamorgan at Neath, although that didn't deter his team from posting a big score batting first. Varma joined Hampshire earlier this year, marking his maiden stint in County Cricket in the UK. In his four County Championship appearances, Varma notched up two hundreds and a half-century. But the start to his One-Day Cup stint has not been as smooth. Having been put in to bat, Ali Orr and Hampshire skipper Nick Gubbins added 68 runs for the opening stand before the former was dismissed by Ned Leonard. Varma walked in next but could last just three deliveries as he was caught by Asa Tribe off Leonard as well, departing for a three-ball duck. Watch the video here: Hampshire soon found themselves at 81/3 before Gubbins and Tom Prest added 34 runs for the fourth wicket. After the latter was dismissed by Kiran Carlson, Gubbins and wicketkeeper Ben Mayes built a 141-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Hampshire eventually posted 324/6 with Gubbins scoring 144, while Mayes contributed with a 55-ball 74. Glamorgan are yet to bat. Since making his T20I debut two years ago, Varma has featured in 25 games, boasting a brilliant average of 49.93 and a strike rate of 155. Varma has played four ODIs as well, but is yet to make a mark, with 68 runs at 22.66. In List A cricket, he averages 46.68 across 36 games, while in first-class cricket, he holds a brilliant average of 52 from 22 matches. Varma is yet to represent India in Tests. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Please keep discussions respectful and constructive. Khaleel Ahmed cuts short Essex stint due to personal reasons, returns home early

India's left-arm seamer Khaleel Ahmed has cut short his stint with English county side Essex owing to personal reasons, the club confirmed on Monday. The 26-year-old, who had joined Essex in June for what was supposed to be a two-month spell covering both red and white-ball formats, returned home after featuring in just two first-class matches in the ongoing County contract was initially meant to see him through until late September. He was expected to play in six County Championship matches - essentially the remainder of Essex's red-ball season - and a maximum of ten List A fixtures in the Royal London One-Day Cup. However, his involvement was limited to just two red-ball games, in which he claimed four wickets at an average of 64.50."While we are disappointed to see him leave, we fully support Khaleel's decision and are grateful for the contributions he made during his time with us," Essex said in an official statement. The club did not disclose further details about the nature of the personal reasons prompting his early return. Khaleel had joined Essex on the back of a notable red-ball performance for India A, where he picked up figures of 4 for 70 in a first-class match against the England Lions. That spell, combined with his left-arm angle and white-ball credentials, had made him an attractive late-season addition to the Essex squad. His signing was announced in mid-June, and he linked up with the side shortly he struggled to make a significant impact in his brief outing for Essex, the stint was seen as an opportunity for Khaleel to get more red-ball exposure in overseas conditions, particularly with the Indian selectors keeping an eye on seam bowling options ahead of a packed international who last represented India in 2019, has played 11 One-Day Internationals and 14 T20Is, collecting 15 and 13 wickets respectively. In the longer format, he has featured in 22 first-class matches, taking 60 wickets at an average of 30.13. While his white-ball exploits are more widely known, he has quietly built up a respectable red-ball record for his domestic side was also part of last year's Duleep Trophy campaign and is expected to be in contention once again as the inter-zonal tournament returns to kickstart India's red-ball domestic season on 28 August. The early end to his County stint may yet allow him to re-integrate into domestic preparations with Rajasthan or his zonal side ahead of that fixture.- Ends

Major Setback For Yorkshire As Ruturaj Gaikwad Opts Out Of County Season; Here's Why

In a surprising development, Indian opener and Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has pulled out of his much-anticipated stint with Yorkshire County Cricket Club, citing personal reasons. The news came just days ahead of his expected debut in the County Championship and the Royal London One-Day Cup, where he was slated to feature in multiple matches during the English domestic season. Sudden Withdrawal Disrupts Yorkshire's Plans Yorkshire's head coach, Anthony McGrath, confirmed the development during a press interaction, stating: 'Unfortunately, Gaikwad's not coming now for personal reasons. We're not going to have him for Scarborough or the rest of the season. So that's disappointing. I can't tell you anything about the reasons why, but we hope that everything's ok. We've just found out. We're working behind the scenes on what we can do. But it's only two or three days away, so I'm not sure what we can do at the moment. We're working to try and get a possible replacement, but time pressure is the issue. I can't give you anything more than that at the moment," McGrath said. Missed Opportunity for Both Sides This would have been Gaikwad's first-ever stint in the English county circuit, an experience many Indian cricketers have found invaluable in improving their technique and temperament. The 28-year-old right-hander had recently recovered from an elbow injury suffered during IPL 2025 and was eager to get game time ahead of India's upcoming domestic and international schedule. For Yorkshire, Gaikwad's inclusion was part of a broader plan to boost their batting strength and gain a competitive edge in both the County Championship and the One-Day Cup. What Lies Ahead? While the exact nature of Gaikwad's reasons has not been disclosed, it is understood to be serious enough to warrant his complete withdrawal from the overseas assignment. His focus may now shift back to Indian domestic cricket, where he is likely to feature for Maharashtra in the upcoming Ranji and white-ball seasons. Yorkshire, meanwhile, are now under pressure to quickly finalise a replacement, as the County season is already underway and every match is crucial in their bid for success.

Why Indian-Origin Yash Vagadia Fielded For Ben Stokes During ENG vs IND Test At Headingley

An unexpected moment at Headingley has introduced cricket fans to a promising name—Yash Vagadia. The 21-year-old Indian-origin cricketer made headlines when he briefly took the field for England, replacing skipper Ben Stokes during India's second innings. But who is Vagadia, and how did he end up in England whites during a marquee Test match? During Day 3 of the ongoing first Test between India and England at Headingley, Leeds, viewers were momentarily puzzled to see a fresh, unfamiliar face donning England colours. Yash Vagadia, not part of England's official 14-member squad, stepped in as a substitute fielder when Ben Stokes left the field after the seventh over of India's second innings. With India at 22/1, Vagadia's brief on-field appearance stirred intrigue across social media, prompting searches and questions about this mystery player who seemingly came out of nowhere. Who Is Yash Vagadia? Rising Star From Yorkshire Born in Newcastle to Indian parents, Yash Vagadia is a promising young talent within England's domestic circuit. The right-handed batter and occasional off-spinner currently plays for Yorkshire County Cricket Club, having risen through the ranks from Under-14 to captain of the Academy and Under-18 sides. He is also a student of biology and chemistry at Durham University and signed a rookie professional contract with Yorkshire in 2022. Vagadia's senior debut came in the 2024 Royal London One-Day Cup against Warwickshire, although he's yet to feature in first-class cricket. Yash Vagadia Career Stats (As of June 2025) Team & FormatMatchesRunsAverageStrike Rate Yorkshire (List A) 2 22 11.00 62.85 Yorkshire 2nd XI (Red-ball) 28 1375 34.37 63.80 Yorkshire 2nd XI (T20) 24 378 21.00 129.45 While his List A numbers are yet to shine, Vagadia has been a consistent performer in the second XI setup, showcasing potential across red-ball and T20 formats. Why Was Yash Vagadia Allowed to Field for England? Despite not being in England's playing squad, Vagadia was named among the designated 12th men for the Headingley Test—an honour given to select local players from Yorkshire. Alongside teammates Jawad Akhtar and Noah Kelly, Vagadia was drafted to assist with fielding duties, a move aimed at giving young talents a glimpse into the demands and culture of international cricket. It wasn't the first time either. Vagadia was part of England's support group during the 2023 Ashes Test at Headingley, further underscoring his growing stature within domestic cricket. Yorkshire CCC proudly announced the involvement of its young stars on social media: "Great to see Yorkshire's own Jawad Akhtar, Noah Kelly & Yash Vagadia sharing 12th man duties for the #ENGvIND Test here at Headingley," the club wrote on X. Symbol of Diversity and Aspiration Yash Vagadia's short stint on the field might not have impacted the scoreboard, but it left a symbolic mark. An Indian-origin cricketer fielding for England against India in a high-stakes Test match paints a powerful picture of cricket's multicultural fabric in the UK. His appearance also speaks to England's deep-rooted domestic talent development system, which regularly exposes young, local players to elite cricket environments through such initiatives. Match Context: Day 3 Drama Continues While Vagadia's cameo stole attention off the field, the cricketing action remained intense. England had posted 465, riding on Ollie Pope's superb 106, but India replied strongly. Jasprit Bumrah's 5/83 gave the visitors a slender six-run lead. As India began their second innings, KL Rahul and B Sai Sudharsan built a 66-run stand before Stokes struck late, removing Sudharsan and bringing England back into the contest. India, however, still held a 96-run lead by stumps, setting up a gripping finale for Day 4.
