Ajeet Singh Dale, Gloucestershire medium-pacer, is all set to play for England Lions against India A.
Star Gloucestershire medium-pacer Ajeet Singh Dale is all set to take the field for the England Lions when they take on India A in an all-important clash for the two sides, with quite a few eyebrows being raised as to who Ajeet is and how the 24-year-old's career has panned out till now.
Born in July 2000 in Berkshire, Ajeet is a right-arm medium-pacer and right-handed batter, known for his contributions in the former role.
Ajeet started his professional career with Hampshire, making his first-class debut in 2020 during the Bob Willis Trophy. He picked three wickets on debut against Sussex, including that of England allrounder Ollie Robinson. He bagged four wickets in two matches that season, at an average of 18.25.

Ajeet signed with Gloucestershire in 2022 on a multi-year deal, with 2023 proving to be a breakout year for him. He made his T20 debut against Sri Lanka Cricket Development XI but conceded 44 runs in his three overs in that game.
Ajeet made his List A debut in the Royal London One-Day Cup and bowled an economic spell of 4-0-24-0 against Surrey.
It was in the 2023 season that Ajeet achieved his career-best bowling figures of 6/41 against Worcestershire.
Bowling with express pace, Ajeet's talents as a fast bowler have earned him recognition with the Lions as well, in which he showed his potential on the broader stage, and is now set to play against India A.
Ajeet is coming off a brilliant performance in the recent County Championship match against Kent. He picked up nine wickets in that game earlier this month, seven coming in one innings. He has picked 22 wickets in five matches in the tournament at an economy of 3.45.
Meanwhile, a clutch of frontline Indian Test players, including opener Yashasvi Jaiswal and all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, will be eager to acclimatise to English conditions during India A's first four-day unofficial Test against the England Lions.
Apart from Jaiswal and Nitish, the India A team has Abhimanyu Easwaran, Dhruv Jurel, Karun Nair, pacers Akash Deep and Shardul Thakur.

Test captain Shubman Gill unlikely to play for India A in second unofficial Test against England Lions

New Delhi [India], June 3 (ANI): India's newly crowned Test captain, Shubman Gill, won't feature in the second unofficial Test between India A and England Lions, which is scheduled to be held at Northampton from June 6, according to ESPNcricinfo. Last month, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) unveiled a Test squad for the five high-stakes Tests in England, beginning from June 20 at Headingley. The board announced that Gill, who succeeded Rohit Sharma as the Test captain, and Sai Sudharsan would join India A for the second unofficial Test. However, according to ESPNcricinfo, Gill and Sudharsan will travel with the main squad, landing in England on June 6. But seasoned wicketkeeper batter KL Rahul is expected to feature against the England Lions after linking up with the India A squad on Tuesday. Along with Rahul, Akash Deep will be available for selection. Akash sustained a back injury after the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia. He regained fitness in April and featured for the Lucknow Super Giants, scalping three wickets from six fixtures. According to ESPNcricinfo, Akash was present with the India A squad in the first unofficial Test in Canterbury and bowled in short stints during the breaks across the four days. England Lions, who fielded an inexperienced XI with six Test caps in the first unofficial contest, are expected to receive a massive boost from Chris Woakes's addition for the second clash. The first unofficial Test between India A and England Lions ended in a draw on Monday. Yashasvi Jaiswal (64 off 60 balls), Abhimanyu Easwaran (68 off 87 balls), Dhruv Jurel (53 not out), and Nitish Kumar Reddy (52 not out off 47 balls) impressed in the second innings. Meanwhile, in the first turn, Karun Nair's redemption arc in England began with a rollicking double century. On Day 2, with the sun shining over Canterbury, Karun stepped on the crease with an ambition of continuing to thrive with his formula of success and making England Lions toil hard for wickets. The 32-year-old had to wait till the final over of the 101st over to get his hands on the elusive landmark. Eddie Jack went wayward in line and length, allowing Nair to exploit the gap. He sent the ball racing towards the boundary rope for a four and brought up a sizzling double ton. Nair soaked in the sound of applause in the stadium and kissed his helmet to allow the landmark moment to sink in. Nair holed it to Rew off Zaman Akhter and returned with 204(281). (ANI)

Virat Kohli's No. 18 Jersey Set To Be 'Retired' As No Player Wants 'Burden'

Last Updated: Virat Kohli's number 18 jersey is set to be 'unofficially retired' from Indian cricket because no new player is likely to take the 'burden' of his legacy number. News18 Hours after pacer Mukesh Kumar's wearing of a Number-18 kit for India 'A' against England Lions caused an uproar on social media, a new report has claimed that no player is likely to take up the number — immortalised by the recently retired Virat Kohli — in Tests 'in the near future'. According to news agency PTI, Mukesh has not officially taken up the number and just wore it for the unofficial Test, while if he's called up to the senior squad that'll play five Tests against England, his jersey number will be 49 — the one he has been wearing since his debut. The report added that just like Sachin Tendulkar's jersey No. 10 and MS Dhoni's No. 7, 'it was unlikely' that any player would be open to taking the 'burden' of the legacy number. 'Mukesh wore No. 18 during the opening 'Test' match versus Lions. But when it comes to India A squad, there are no fixed numbers as jerseys don't have names. Anyone can pick any random number. The jersey numbers are only sacrosanct for international games," the news agency quoted a senior BCCI official as saying. The report claimed that the two new members of the squad, B Sai Sudharsan and Arshdeep Singh, will also not wear the number 18 jersey. In Indian cricket, there is no official tradition for retiring specific jersey numbers, nor is there any such rule mentioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC). But both Tendulkar and Dhoni's numbers haven't been worn since their retirements, except for one instance when Mumbai all-rounder Shardul Thakur wore the 10 and was abused, forced to change it again. Kohli announced his Test retirement on May 12 via an Instagram post, saying that although the decision was difficult, he felt the time was right to call of the 14-year-long journey. India's five-Test series against England will be the first since then and several options — new captain Shubman Gill, debutant-call-up Sai Sudharsan and returnee Karun Nair have been touted as options to take his number four position. In the India 'A' game, where Gill and Sudharsan didn't play, Nair scored a double ton to strengthen his chances while Mukesh picked up three wickets. First Published: June 02, 2025, 21:23 IST
