Mumbai-Ahmedabad highway mishaps claimed over 30 lives between Jan and June this year
Bhonsale said that over 50 serious accidents occurred on the highway during this period. He mentioned that these accidents were due to the negligence of the driver. Bhonsale was replying to questions raised by Shiv Sena MLA Vilas Tare.
"Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway No. 48 is under the care of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) for maintenance and repair. NHAI has undertaken the work of white topping the entire stretch from Achchad to Dahisar (121 km).
Currently, about 98% of the white topping work is completed. While the work was in progress, potholes and tyre marks were found in some places due to traffic passing over the newly laid concrete.
Its repair is in progress by the contractor," Bhonsale said in his reply.
"According to the police report, 50 serious accidents occurred between January 2025 and June 2025. It has been reported that the accidents occurred due to the negligence of the driver.
So far, Rs 400 crore has been spent on the said road work. In view of highway safety, the works of three underpasses and ten pedestrian bridges (FOB) have also been implemented separately. Due to the delay caused by the contractor in the repair work, the contractor was debarred from the tender process for three months in April 2025, and if the work is not completed on time, strict action will be taken against the contractor," Bhonsale said.

KUPMA seeks scrapping of three examinations for II PU
Stating that the present three examinations conducted for II PU courses are taking away the teaching time of teachers, Mangaluru-based Karnataka Unaided Pre University College Management Association (KUPMA) on Wednesday urged the State government to scrap two examinations. Talking to reporters, KUPMA secretary Narendra L. Nayak said that the sanctity of II PU has been lost by holding three examinations in a short span of time. 'The first examination and valuation are done during vacation and it is fine. The second examination and evaluation are done during the start of the new academic year and it is manageable. But it is difficult to spare lecturers for the third examination when the classes will be in full swing. It will consume valuable teaching time of lecturers,' Mr. Nayak said. He said that the government should go back to the old examination pattern by conducting the main examination and a supplementary exam. KUPMA has written a letter on the same to the government, he said. KUPMA vice-president Sudhakar Shetty said the government should study the pros and cons of holding three examinations and take a necessary decision, in consultation with representatives of unaided institutions. Mr. Nayak said every year unaided PU colleges were forced to annually apply for renewal of recognition, along with no-objection certificates from PWD, Fire and Emergency Services, and other departments, after paying recognition fee of ₹179 for each first-year student and ₹880 for every second-year student. The department was taking longer time in approving request for allowing additional students for the course. Lecturers from unaided colleges were not considered for 'Best Teacher' award given by the government every year, Mr. Nayak said. KUPMA president M. Mohan Alva said 201 persons from unaided institutions across the State were members of KUPMA. A district-wise membership drive will be held between July 20 and September 20. A State-level convention of KUPMA will be held in Davangere on September 12 and 13, he said.

'That Bihar is high on the Prime Minister's agenda can be gauged from the fact that he will be visiting the state for the 53rd time since he assumed power. The state will be showered with development projects worth Rs 7,196 crore,' Jaiswal said. The BJP leader also said that at the function, the PM will disburse an amount of Rs 162 crore, through direct cash transfer, to 40,000 beneficiaries of Pradhan Mantri Gramin Awas Yojana while another 12,000 people will be handed over the keys to their new houses. 'In addition, financial assistance of Rs 400 crore will be extended to 61,500 self-help groups during the function. Bihar, which sees Modi as family, awaits the PM eagerly,' Jaiswal added.

Police form new cell to monitor contract killers
1 2 3 Patna: In the wake of a recent surge in killings by shooters, including high-profile murders like that of businessman Gopal Khemka and advocate Jitendra Mehta in Patna, Bihar Police Headquarters (PHQ) on Wednesday announced the formation of a special "Contract killer monitoring cell" to tackle professional hitmen. Additional Director General (ADG) of PHQ Kundan Krishnan said the new cell, formed under the Bihar Special Task Force (STF), will maintain a comprehensive database of approximately 350 known contract killers, with their physical descriptions, addresses and other crucial details. "This database will aid in the quick identification of suspects through CCTV camera footage analysis, a method that has proven successful in recent cases," he said. The move is expected to enhance the police's ability to prevent and solve such crimes through better intelligence gathering and interstate coordination. The police have already established a "Kodha cell" to monitor the Kodha gang, whose operations extend beyond Bihar. The gang members primarily originate from three to four villages in the Kodha block of Katihar district. The cell helps other state police forces identify the Kodha gang members. "Our intelligence unit, working with the Kodha Cell, has successfully solved 50 cases this year alone, both within Bihar and in other states, leading to the arrest of 70 criminals and recovery of more than Rs 55 lakh in criminal proceeds," said Krishnan. Additionally, in a significant breakthrough in an ongoing anti-Maoist operations, the Bihar STF arrested 82 Maoists this year till July 15. Besides, two wanted Maoist leaders, including Ravan's aide and spokesperson Akhilesh Singh, have surrendered. The continuous campaign has achieved a remarkable success in north Bihar, where their presence is completely eliminated. In Magadh zone, only one wanted Maoist Nitesh Yadav remains at large, currently believed to be hiding in the hilly regions of Palamu district in Jharkhand. The JB zone reports only three armed Maoists remaining, the ADG said. "The campaign has also dealt a significant blow to the Maoists' financial resources by destroying opium cultivation fields in the Magadh region, severely disrupting their supply network," Krishnan added. During various raids, security forces recovered significant arms and ammunition, including two semi-automatic rifles and 67 PMK (machine gun).
