Migrant row: Relatives of two Birbhum families file habeas corpus petition in Calcutta HC
The plea, filed on behalf of the missing families, will be heard on Wednesday by a division bench of Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty and Justice Reetobroto Kumar Mitra, according to lawyers representing the relatives of the two families.
'We have appealed that the family members be found and brought before the court,' said Sabnam Sultana, advocate for the petitioners.
Samirul Islam, chairman of the West Bengal Migrant Labour Welfare Board, said the state administration is pressing the Centre and BSF to trace the two failies and ensure their safe return. Bhodu Sheikh, father of Sunali Khatun and Amir Khan elder brother of Sweety Bibi have filed the petition with the Calcutta High Court.
'This Sunday we got a call from my sister who and her children are now somewhere in Bangladesh. They were begging us to bring them back. We are poor people . What can we do? The state government is helping. We are begging to the court to do something and bring them back,' Amir Khan told The Indian Express.
'My daughter, her husband and her child are there too in Bangladesh. I do not know whether I will see them again. They went to Delhi to work as rag pickers. Our only hope is court now,' said Bhodu Sheikh.

Congress trying to defame Centre over BC reservation issue: Kishan Reddy
BJP senior leader and Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy has reiterated that the Congress government's attempt to provide 42% reservation to the Backward Classes (BCs) in local bodies would not at all benefit the BCs, as they would only get 32% reservation since the proposed BC reservations include 10% Muslim quota. He accused the Congress government of resorting to appeasement politics for political gains. Addressing a protest organised by the BJP OBC Morcha at Dharna Chowk on Saturday, Mr. Reddy said the reservations would indeed be around 32% for the BCs, as 34% reservations in local bodies were already in implementation before the BRS regime in the State. 'The Congress government has not completed the process to implement 42% reservations for the BCs. Instead, it's trying to defame the BJP and the Centre,' he said. Former Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao also reduced the reservations to 23% from 34% in the local bodies for BCs. Now, Mr. Revanth Reddy is also trying to reduce the reservations, he alleged. 'The people of Telangana are observing Revanth Reddy's anti-BC actions. Despite being in power in the State and at the Centre for many years, the Congress has not conducted a caste census. To do justice to the BCs, the Centre, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will conduct a caste census along with the population census. New Delhi: Congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar has taken a swipe at party MP Shashi Tharoor's foreign visits as part of India's global outreach to inform other nations of Pakistan's role behind the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday came down heavily on the Congress-led Opposition for "raising questions" about Operation Sindoor "instead of paying tributes to the valour displayed by our armed forces". He also alleged the Congress had been "soft" on insurgency while in power, and tried to "frame innocent people" by spinning the theory of "saffron terror" because of "vote bank" considerations.
