Families of Pulau Perhentian boat tragedy victims prepare for final rites, request privacy amid grief
Special Officer (Non Islamic Affairs) to the Terengganu Menteri Besar, Dr K. Balachandran, said post mortem examinations and other formalities for S. Arumugam (40), his daughter A. Sarrvihka (three) and their relative V. Vennpani (10) were completed at about 4.30pm today.
'The bodies of the father and daughter will be sent to Butterworth, while the third victim will be taken to Sungai Petani.
'A family member informed us that the 15 passengers, from four related families, had arrived for a holiday last Friday and were due to travel back to Sungai Petani and Butterworth today,' he said when met at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ) Forensic Unit.
According to Balachandran, the family had finished dinner on Pulau Perhentian Kecil and were heading to Pulau Perhentian Besar when their boat was hit by strong waves and overturned, claiming three lives.
Balachandran said surviving passengers and the families of the deceased are still traumatised and have requested privacy.
'They are not ready to speak to anyone, including the media, but they have expressed gratitude to all agencies and volunteers who assisted,' he added.
The incident occurred at about 10.30 pm on Saturday. The boat was carrying 15 passengers aged between three and 40. Three people died, while one passenger remains in critical condition in HSNZ's Intensive Care Unit. — Bernama

'I have always upheld the principles of integrity, accountability and clean governance in line with the Sabah state government's commitment to combat corruption,' he said in a Facebook post. 'I have instructed my legal team to take firm action against any party spreading these false allegations.' The Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) deputy president's denial follows a rebuttal from party president Jeffrey Kitingan, who was also implicated in the Malaysiakini report, along with four other Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) leaders. On Monday, Sabah assistant industrial development and entrepreneurship minister Andi Suryady Bandy, and Sindumin assemblyman Dr Yusof Yacob were charged with receiving bribes related to mineral prospecting licence applications in the state. Yusof is also the chairman of Qhazanah Sabah Bhd, the state government's investment arm. Businessman Albert Wei was charged with bribing them. The alleged scandal was reported last year after a series of videos linking several Sabah assemblymen to it were leaked. The videos allegedly depicted discussions involving bribery and misconduct related to mineral exploration projects in the state. In February, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki said the initial batch of videos lacked credibility as they had been heavily edited.

61 witnesses called in MEX II probe, says Azam

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has called 61 witnesses in its ongoing investigation into the Maju Expressway Extension (MEX II) project, says chief commissioner Azam Baki. Speaking at a press conference in Kota Bharu, Azam said that all witnesses were summoned recently. 'I have given my officers a maximum of two months to complete the investigation papers for this case, and I believe that it can be completed sooner and then submitted to the deputy public prosecutor,' he said, reported Bernama. On May 29, MACC seized assets worth around RM32 million as part of its probe into the case. This included a luxury condominium and a plot of land valued at RM24.5 million, as well as nine vehicles valued at RM7.6 million. MACC has also seized luxury watches valued at about RM25 million, designer handbags valued at RM3 million, jewellery and diamonds worth RM6 million, four horses valued at RM400,000, and premium alcoholic beverages worth RM3 million. The anti-graft agency had questioned a corporate figure with a 'Tan Sri' title whom Azam previously said was the main suspect in the case. The corporate figure is being investigated for false claims and misuse of loan bonds related to the highway project. Hundreds of millions in sukuk funds were suspected to have been channelled to a company owned by the 'Tan Sri' and later misused for personal interests instead of the highway project. The funds were allegedly transferred to multiple entities, including proxy companies and the personal account of a family member, and used to acquire real estate, luxury vehicles and goods, as well as to fund gambling activities. The 18km MEX II extension, intended to link Putrajaya to KLIA, began in 2016 and was initially scheduled for completion in December 2019. Last month, works minister Alexander Nanta Linggi said the government was working with all stakeholders to resolve the project's delay, reportedly caused by financial issues.

Company director nabbed for allegedly laundering RM75mil
A source from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission said the suspect, in his 50s, was arrested yesterday evening. PETALING JAYA : The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has nabbed a company director with the title 'Datuk Wira' for allegedly laundering approximately RM75 million. A source from the MACC said that the male suspect, in his 50s, was arrested around 4pm yesterday while giving a statement at the anti-graft agency's headquarters in Putrajaya. 'Preliminary investigations suggest that RM75 million was channelled into a company owned by the suspect,' the source said. The source also said the offence is believed to have occurred in 2012 and is linked to a RM400 million loan for a fibre network development project. The MACC had launched a special operation codenamed Op Fibre on June 30. As part of the operation, the anti-graft agency raided four separate locations, including the suspect's residence and office in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur. The MACC also froze 12 bank accounts, including personal and corporate accounts, with a combined value of approximately RM400,000. The MACC's special operations division senior director, Zamri Zainul Abidin, confirmed the arrest and said that the case is being investigated under the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001. Magistrate Irza Zulaikha Rohanuddin has granted a four-day remand order against the suspect, effective until July 6.
