Jaipur: The
Rajasthan High Court
Monday ordered the transfer of a high-profile assault case involving former MLA Girraj Singh Malinga from Dholpur to Jaipur, citing concerns over witness safety and the accused's influential status in the region.
The single-judge bench of Justice Umashankar Vyas issued the transfer order while hearing a criminal transfer petition filed by assistant engineer Harshadhipati, the victim in the case.
The case stems from an alleged assault on Harshadhipati and junior engineer Nitin Gulati at the Bari discom office in Dholpur on March 28, 2022. Malinga, who is currently out on bail, has faced multiple charges of assault on public servants.
He was a Congress MLA from Bari but switched over to BJP prior to assembly elections in 2023. He, however, lost the election.
"We told court that victim and witnesses face life threats in Dholpur as the accused is a strongman," said Akhil Simlote, counsel for the petitioner. The court noted that a procession organised by Malinga's supporters following his bail release demonstrated his significant influence in the area.

The case will now be heard at the SC-ST Court in Jaipur district, with Justice Vyas directing for a timely completion of the trial. The high court has directed the Jaipur Police Commissioner to implement robust security measures during the case hearings. "The high court has directed appointment of one SI and two ASIs under the Case Officers Scheme in the matter to assist the lower court and the prosecution," Simlote said.
Malinga's bail history has been contentious. Initially granted in May 2022 due to Covid-19, the bail was cancelled by the high court on July 5, 2024, because of the celebratory procession organised by his supporters. Though he again surrendered and was jailed on the high court's directions, the Supreme Court stayed the bail cancellation on Dec 13, 2024.

The survivor reported being invited for a counseling session, then allegedly drugged and sexually assaulted KOLKATA: Barely a fortnight since a law college student was gangraped by college seniors and a former student inside the college campus, a second-year student at a premium management institute in Kolkata was arrested for allegedly raping a female acquaintance at the boys hostel inside the institute campus. According to police, the survivor first went to Thakurpukur police station and then to Haridevpur on Friday where she lodged a complaint against the accused – second year student Paramanand Toppaunwar, a resident of Bengaluru. She alleged she knew the youth from beforehand and on Friday she went to the campus upon being invited by the youth for a counselling session. The survivor stated that she was semi-conscious for a while and later lost consciousness. She regained awareness in the evening and found herself alone in the hostel room. Probing into the case, police started a case under BNS sections 64 (rape) and 123 (causing hurt by means of poison or other harmful substances with the intent to commit another offense). Meanwhile, the incident has put the role of campus security under scrutiny. Despite a recent increase in police vigilance and the issuance of a standard operating procedure for educational institutions following the law college gangrape case, questions have emerged regarding lapses at the management institute. Authorities are probing how the woman was allowed access to the hostel area without registration or security checks. The security guard posted at the hostel gate is being questioned. Ovidio Guzman Lopez: Drug lord 'El Chapo's' son pleads guilty; admits to drug trafficking charges

Ovidio Guzman Lopez (AP image) Ovidio Guzman Lopez, the son of notorious Mexican drug lord 'El Chapo' pleaded guilty on Friday (local time) to drug trafficking charges in the United States. He is the first of El Chapo's sons to agree to a plea deal with US prosecutors. Prosecutors say Ovidio and his brother, Joaquín Guzmán López, led a faction of the Sinaloa cartel known as the 'Chapitos' or 'little Chapos.' Authorities described their operation as a major effort to smuggle huge amounts of fentanyl into the US, contributing to tens of thousands of overdose deaths every year. As part of the plea deal, Ovidio admitted to overseeing the production and trafficking of cocaine, heroin , methamphetamine, marijuana and fentanyl into the US. He also pleaded guilty to money laundering and firearms charges connected to his leadership role in the cartel. The specific terms of the agreement, including possible sentencing reductions or cooperation agreements, were not immediately disclosed. However, officials said sentencing has been delayed as Ovidio cooperates with US authorities. His lawyer, Jeffrey Lichtman, said he would wait until sentencing before discussing whether it was a good deal. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Secure your family's future! 'Remember, Joaquin was arrested in America well after Ovidio was, so it takes time,' Lichtman said. Laurie Levenson, a law professor at Loyola Law School and former assistant US attorney in Los Angeles, said Ovidio's guilty plea might have helped protect his family members. 'In this way, he has some control over who he's cooperating against and what the world will know about that cooperation.' Levenson described the plea deal as a 'big step' for the US government. Meanwhile, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Friday criticized what she called a 'lack of coherence' in American policy toward Mexican cartels. She pointed out the contradiction between the US labeling cartels as foreign terrorist organizations while also making plea deals with their leaders. Ovidio Guzmán López was arrested in Mexico in 2023 and extradited to the United States. He had first pleaded not guilty but signaled in recent months that he would change his plea. His father, Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán, is serving a life sentence in the US after being convicted in 2019 for leading the Sinaloa cartel and having smuggled massive amount of cocaine and other drugs into the United States for over 25 years.

Naini slams BRS leaders for baseless remarks

Launching scathing attack on BRS leaders and corporators, MLA Naini Rajender Reddy said that some people without proper subject knowledge have been making statements. He participated as chief guest and inaugurated development works in the 4rth division's Jyotibasunagar Colony on Friday. They included a CC road constructed with Rs 25 lakh and another CC road from Akshara Colony to the main road built at a cost of Rs 49.9 lakh. The MLA interacted with residents and listened to their issues. Recently, verbal clashes have intensified between the BRS and Congress corporators and leaders. Each side is conducting media conferences, challenging one another to public debates. Against this backdrop, the MLA strongly responded during his inauguration speech. He emphasised that funds were sanctioned with intent to involve everyone in the development process, regardless of party affiliation, because people across all divisions had voted for them with trust. He warned that he would present detailed evidence before the media comparing the works done during BRS's rule with the development achieved in just 18 months under the government. He stated that during BRS rule, funds were deliberately not allocated to divisions with Congress corporators, but under this government, public development and welfare are the main priorities. He mentioned that even in divisions with BJP and BRS corporators, funds are now being allocated on an equal basis. He criticised some BRS corporators for boycotting a recent Ballia council meeting not to fight for people's issues, but for political gain. As an MLA elected with the cooperation of everyone, he said he is working impartially and allocating funds for development without forgetting anyone. Since the Congress came to power, he said, with the support of CM, funds are being sanctioned for development of all colonies. In just 18 months, about Rs 4.5 crore has been allocated solely for the development of colonies in the division. Reddy stressed that understanding and solving public issues is his primary responsibility; development works taken up in colonies with the cooperation of GWMC and KUDA are progressing rapidly. He instructed officials and contractors to work in coordination to ensure the newly launched projects are completed within a short time.
