Kishan's brilliance takes SRH to an easy win over RCB

LUCKNOW: A fine knock by Ishan Kishan (94) and some good bowling by Pat Cummins (3/28) and Eshan Malinga (2/37) on Friday helped Sunrisers Hyderabad finish their league campaign in the Indian Premier League with a 42-run win over Royal Challengers Bengaluru, at the Ekana Cricket Stadium here. Kishan, who scored a century in the opening match against Rajasthan Royals, showed his might once again, hitting an unbeaten 94 off 48 balls with the help of seven boundaries and five sixes as SRH posted 231/6 after being sent to bat first. In reply, RCB, who are still at the second position in the IPL table with 17 points, got a good start as Phil Salt and Virat Kohli put on 80 runs for the opening wicket partnership but they couldn't cross the line as Sri Lankan pacer Malinga and finished their innings on 189 in 19.5 overs. Both Cummins and Malinga were on target, leaving RCB batters struggling, especially in the latter stages of the game. While Cummins removed tailenders, Malinga bagged the wickets of Romario Shepherd and Tim David in quick succession after running out Rajat Patidar (18). This was the moment the game turned in SRH's favour. In fact, RCB were cruising with Salt and Kohli hammering SRH bowlers around the ground. The duo added 72 runs in the Powerplay itself. But Kohli's departure changed the complexion of the game as the right-hander had struck a 25-ball 43 with the help of seven boundaries and a six. But the former RCB skipper was caught at point off young spinner Harsh Dubey, who came as the Impact Player. Earlier, SRH lost both openers Abhishek Sharma (34, 17b, 3x4, 3x6) and Travis Head (17, 10b, 3x4) within the Powerplay after the duo had added 54 runs for the opening wicket. But SRH kept pushing on despite the loss of those wicket as Ishan Kishan and Henrich Klassen put the RCB bowlers to the sword, stitching together 48 runs for the third wicket before Klassen (24, 23b, 2x4, 2x6) fell to Suyash Sharma, lofting his slower googly to Romario Shepherd at long-on. Kishan kept things going from his end with a a flurry of boundaries and sixes, including two sixes off Krunal Pandya, to show that if and when he gets going, he can be quite the matchwinner. If he can match his sense of adventure with some consistency. SRH will have a lot to look forward to next season.

Abhishek finds form as SRH end LSG's playoffs hopes

LUCKNOW: For the second successive season, Lucknow Super Giants failed to make it to the playoffs of the Indian Premier League, after the six-wicket loss to Sunrisers Hyderabad in their penultimate home game on Monday. With just 10 points in 11 matches going into the game against Sunrisers, LSG desperately needed to win to stay in contention for the playoffs. They seemed to raise hopes after posting 205, but they could not pose any problem for SRH, who romped home with 10 balls to spare, winning by six wickets. Opener Abhishek Sharma showed his might with willow, hitting his second half-century of the season to keep SRH going well in the run chase as the side raced to 72 in the first six overs. His 20-ball 59 (4x4, 6x6) made the difference after SRH lost opener Atharva Taide (13) in the second over. Abhishek along with Ishan Kishan (35 - 28b, 3x4, 2x6) set the tone for an easy chase, adding 82 runs for the second wicket. Thereafter, Henrich Klassen (47 - 28b, 4x4, 1x6) and Kamindu Mendis (32* - 21b, 3x4, retd hurt) completed the chase at ease. Earlier, overseas batters Mitchell Marsh, Aiden Markram and Nicholas Pooran produced fine knocks to help LSG post a challenging total after being sent to bat. Marsh and Markram pressed the accelerator from the word go to help the side post 69 in the Powerplay at an average of 11.50. Marsh struck a boundary and a six off Pat Cummins before hammering debutant left-arm spinner Harsh Dubey for six on the very second ball of the second over. The two continued to hammer Dubey, Harshal Patel and even Eshan Malinga for big runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth overs. Dubey though removed Marsh. The Vidarbha youngster created two chances for SRH early in the game and on both the occasions it was keeper Ishan Kishan who fumbled, first missing a tricky catch and then a stumping chance. Before being caught by Malinga at third man, Marsh struck his fifth half-century of this IPL season, scoring a 39-ball 65 with the help of six fours and four sixes. Markram too struck his fifth fifty of this IPL, striking 61 in 38 balls (3x4, 4x6). The two stitched together 115 runs for the opening wicket. But the real drama unfolded when a sizeable crowd cheered off-colour skipper Rishabh Pant in anticipation for a good show with the bat from him. But their disappointment continued as he could score just seven off six balls before being caught and bowled by Malinga. At No.3, it was yet another change in batting position for Pant after trying his luck as opener, No.5 and No.7 as well without success. On Monday, he was caught brilliantly by Malinga on his follow through. Despite having Pooran (45 - 26b, 4x6, 1x6) at the crease, LSG could muster only 38 runs in the next five overs while losing two more wickets.

"Barely Slept Night Before My Mumbai Indians Debut": Suryakumar Yadav

Mumbai Indians batter Suryakumar Yadav recently reflected on his debut season for Mumbai Indians in 2011 and said that he 'barely slept' the night before the game. Suryakumar first came into prominence during the 2011–12 Ranji Trophy season, where he emerged as the top scorer for Mumbai with 754 runs in nine matches. His impressive domestic form earned him a spot in the Mumbai Indians squad the same year. In the 2012 IPL, Suryakumar made his debut for Mumbai Indians against Pune Warriors at the Wankhede Stadium. He played in one match and was dismissed for a duck. This was also the only match he played for MI in that season. After a brief stint, he moved to Kolkata Knight Riders in 2013 and played a key role in their middle order, contributing to their title win in 2014. "I barely slept the night before my debut for Mumbai Indians - went to bed around 4 or 5 in the morning. There was so much excitement. Playing for a franchise brings a different kind of buzz. I was just enjoying the moment, thinking about stepping onto the field for warm-up and as soon as I did, I was already sweating. It felt really good,' Suryakumar said on JioHotstar's special show, The Suryakumar Yadav Experience. In 2018, Suryakumar returned to Mumbai Indians and enjoyed a breakthrough season with 512 runs, becoming a vital part of their batting lineup. His performances in the 2019 and 2020 seasons were instrumental in MI's title runs and eventually led to his much-awaited national team call-up. 'In 2018, I didn't expect to open. I didn't in the first two games, but then the team management came to me and said they wanted me to take on that responsibility. I was keen, so I embraced it. From there, it was up to me to make the most of the opportunity. I didn't overthink it. Having played all my cricket in Mumbai, I was familiar with the conditions at Wankhede and the pitches. I just kept playing and practicing. I didn't expect to have a season with 500 runs as my previous seasons never went beyond 200, but this felt different.' He also recalled the IPL 2019 final between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, which Mumbai eventually won by one run. Although he didn't directly take part in the last-over decision-making, he was closely observing. 'I was standing at a distance when Rohit and Malinga were talking. Malinga just said, 'Don't worry, I'll do it.' And he did. That moment taught me how important calmness is in such pressure situations.' One of the most emotional moments in his career came in 2020 when he was not picked for the Indian team's tour of Australia. He had been doing well in domestic cricket and also had a good IPL season. 'Everyone thought I would be selected. Even overseas players were saying the same. When I didn't see my name in the squad, I didn't talk to anyone for 2-3 days. I didn't practice either. Mahela and Zaheer could see that something was wrong,' Suryakumar said. From 2021 onwards, Suryakumar has changed the way he approaches T20 batting. 'Earlier, I was batting at a strike rate of 140–150. But the game changed. So I started practicing different shots to stay ahead of the bowlers and captains. I focused on areas where I could score with less risk. My century this season against Sunrisers Hyderabad came because of that practice.' Suryakumar has grown into a dependable batter for India and MI, known for his aggressive and inventive shot-making. He was part of India's victorious squad at the 2024 T20 World Cup and is now leading the national T20 side following Rohit Sharma's retirement. In 160 IPL matches, Suryakumar has scored more than 4,000 runs, including two centuries and 27 half-centuries. Mumbai Indians gear up for a crucial match against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur on Thursday. --IANS
