Kamal Haasan confronts new controversy: Tamil star stops fan from taking out sword during public event

Time of India10 hours ago

A political meeting held by Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) in Chennai took an unexpected turn when party chief and actor Kamal Haasan sternly reprimanded a man who attempted to present him with a sword on stage. The incident, which unfolded just days after Haasan was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu, was captured on video and widely shared on social media platforms.
During the gathering, several supporters approached Haasan for photographs. One individual brought a sword, attempting to persuade the MNM leader to pose with it. At first, Haasan was seen smiling and shaking his head, holding the sword without unsheathing it. However, as the person continued to press him and tried to untie the knot securing the sword, Haasan's demeanor shifted.
He was visibly angered by the persistent request and addressed the individual and his companions sharply. A police officer quickly intervened, taking charge of the situation and ensuring the sword was set aside. Despite the tension, Haasan eventually nodded at the group to move along and managed a brief smile before resuming the event.
Public Reaction and Haasan's Principles
The video sparked conversations online, with many praising Haasan for standing by his principles. Social media users highlighted his statement to the supporter during the confrontation: 'We can keep a book and a pen in our hands, not a sword.' One commenter noted that while others may have chosen to pose with such symbols, Haasan deliberately refrained, calling him a 'good politician.'

Known for his rationalist and non-violent stance, Haasan has consistently rejected the use of weapons or aggressive symbolism in public life. The sword incident briefly disrupted the proceedings but reinforced Haasan's ideological positioning within his party and among his supporters.
Haasan, along with five other candidates, was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Tamil Nadu. The list included Poet Salma, SR Sivalingam, and P Wilson from DMK, as well as IS Inbadurai and Dhanapal from AIADMK. Certificates of election were issued by Returning Officer B Subramaniyam at the Chennai Secretariat.
'Thug Life' Controversy Escalates in Karnataka
This episode also comes amid controversy in Karnataka surrounding Haasan's recent comment on the Kannada language. During the audio launch of his film Thug Life, Haasan remarked that Kannada originated from Tamil. This sparked strong opposition in Karnataka, with cultural bodies and political groups demanding a public apology.
The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) and the Kannada Sahitya Parishat voiced their objections, leading to a ban on the film's release in the state. The matter has reached the courts, with the Supreme Court recently seeking a response from the Karnataka government regarding threats to the film's screening. Meanwhile, Thug Life, which features Trisha Krishnan and Silambarasan TR alongside Haasan, has seen mixed reviews and declining box office numbers elsewhere.

Tripura BJP holds candlelight rally against vandalism at Tagore's ancestral home in B'desh

The ruling BJP in Tripura on Sunday held a candlelight rally to protest the recent attack and vandalism of the ancestral home of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore in Bangladesh. Tripura BJP President Rajib Bhattacharjee, who led the candlelight rally, said that people across the world respect and love Tagore for his monumental literary creations in all fields. Strongly condemning the vandalisation of Tagore's home in Bangladesh, Bhattacharjee, who is also a member of Rajya Sabha, termed the act as a blow to literature, culture and humanism. 'Tagore is the architect of the national anthem of both India and Bangladesh," the BJP leader said and demanded exemplary punishment for those who are involved in the shocking incident. The ruling BJP on Saturday held protests at more than six places in seven districts along Tripura's border with Bangladesh. Senior leaders, including ministers, led the protest rallies in Agartala, Bishalgarh, Udaipur, Belonia, Kailashahar, Dharmanagar and Khowai. BJP sources said that similar protests would also be held on June 16 in all Assembly constituencies in Tripura. State BJP General Secretary and MLA Bhagaban Das, who led a protest rally in Agartala-Akhaura Integrated Check Post, said, 'A barbaric incident of attack and vandalisation at the ancestral home of Rabindranath Tagore in Bangladesh has shocked people in India.' Das, a former minister, said that such an attack on the shared cultural heritage is totally unacceptable. 'There must be a limit to such atrocious actions. The properties and heritage relating to a towering cultural icon like Tagore have not been spared in Bangladesh. Such acts are an unforgivable crime,' he told the media. Earlier, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha also condemned the attack and vandalisation of Tagore's ancestral home in Bangladesh and termed it as an "attack on our culture and heritage". He said that the act was a strongly condemnable and shameful incident for the entire nation. 'The interim government of Bangladesh needs to act strongly,' the Chief Minister said. On June 8, a mob attacked and vandalised the ancestral home of Rabindranath Tagore in Bangladesh, also known as Rabindra Kachharibari or Rabindra Memorial Museum in Sirajganj district. Media reports said that the attackers also assaulted a director of the institution. Situated in Shahzadpur in Rajshahi division, Rabindra Kachharibari is the ancestral home and revenue office of the Tagore family. Many of Tagore's literary works came up while living in this mansion. India's Ministry of External Affairs also on June 12 strongly condemned the vandalism of Tagore's ancestral home in Bangladesh, describing it as part of a 'systematic' pattern by extremists to undermine the country's syncretic cultural heritage. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal termed the June 8 attack on the Rabindra Kachharibari as a 'despicable' act and 'a disgrace to the memory and the inclusive philosophy' of the Nobel Laureate.

Delhi CM Rekha Gupta calls Punjab CM a ‘mask', says AAP's Delhi rejects are running show

CHANDIGARH: Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta today labelled Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann as a mask (mukhota) and asserted that his administration is effectively controlled by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leaders who have been dismissed by the electorate in Delhi. She was campaigning for BJP candidate Jiwan Gupta in the Ludhiana (West) assembly by-elections, for which polling will take place on June 19. During her address, Gupta took a dig at AAP national convener and former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal for failing to fulfil his promises to both Delhi and Punjab, as she questioned, 'What about your promises? (Kya hua tera vaada?)'. She also challenged AAP's commitments to enhance health infrastructure and education, pointing out the ongoing drug problem and the consequences of spurious liquor consumption in Punjab. Gupta alleged that while Mann may be the face of the government, it is the rejected leaders from Delhi who are truly in control. She accused Kejriwal of exhibiting 'false Punjabiyat' and highlighted the lack of representation for the Sikh community in his Delhi cabinet during his tenure. She pointed out that the AAP has fielded Rajya Sabha member Sanjeev Arora for the Ludhiana West bypoll, suggesting that Kejriwal is attempting to secure a pathway to the Rajya Sabha through this election. She asserted that the AAP's leadership in Punjab is ineffective and disconnected from ground realities and the local population. Gupta further criticised the AAP for failing to deliver on its promises made during the 2022 state assembly elections, such as providing financial assistance to women and ensuring minimum support prices for farmers. She accused the party of perpetuating a VIP culture and misusing Punjab's resources for personal gain. Referencing the rampant drug issue in the state, Gupta claimed that the crisis has escalated under the leadership of AAP. 'Punjab has been converted into a Chitta Express,' she said. Gupta claimed that the current BJP government has made strides in delivering justice to the victims of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, including providing job appointment letters to their families. She expressed confidence that voters in Ludhiana West would make a wise choice and support the BJP candidate. Gupta asserted that AAP's governance has led Punjab into significant debt, and she urged voters to reject the party in the upcoming by-election. She claimed that Ludhiana West will serve as a precursor to the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, predicting a victory for the BJP candidate.

Fifth such accident in past six weeks: Kharge demands probe into U'khand chopper crash

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday condoled the loss of lives in Uttarakhand chopper crash and demanded a 'thorough investigation' into the mishap as well as proper safety arrangements for all trips, to ensure that such incidents do not recur. Raising an alarm over the gravity of situation, the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Rajya Sabha said that the chopper crash in Uttarakhand is fifth such helicopter accident in the last six weeks and demanded that accountability for these accidents must be fixed and those responsible must be brought to justice. Taking to his social media handle, the Congress MP wrote: 'The news of helicopter crash in Rudraprayag, Uttarakhand is very painful. Seven passengers have died. Our deepest condolences to the families of the victims. May God give strength to the bereaved family in this hour of grief.' 'There is an appeal to the state and central government that these accidents should be investigated and proper safety arrangements should be ensured,' he further said. Meanwhile, helicopter services for Kedarnath have been suspended for the next two days. 'Helicopter services will not run today or tomorrow. These services will remain closed until the safety of the passengers is ensured,' Uttarakhand CM Pushkar Dhami told the mediapersons on Sunday. Early this morning, seven people, including the pilot were killed after the chopper crashed near the forested area of Gaurikund in Rudraprayag district. The Aryan Aviation Helicopter was flying to Guptkashi from the Kedarnath Dham when it crashed at around 5.30 a.m. on Sunday. In another crucial decision, the operations of Aryan Aviation for the Char Dham Yatra have been suspended with immediate effect. An official said that two helicopters belonging to M/s TransBharat Aviation -- bearing registration numbers VT-TBC and VT-TBF -- were found to have been airborne under similar unsuitable weather conditions following which the licenses of both pilots have been suspended for six months.
