Tripura BJP holds candlelight rally against vandalism at Tagore's ancestral home in B'desh
The ruling BJP in Tripura on Sunday held a candlelight rally to protest the recent attack and vandalism of the ancestral home of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore in Bangladesh.
Tripura BJP President Rajib Bhattacharjee, who led the candlelight rally, said that people across the world respect and love Tagore for his monumental literary creations in all fields. Strongly condemning the vandalisation of Tagore's home in Bangladesh, Bhattacharjee, who is also a member of Rajya Sabha, termed the act as a blow to literature, culture and humanism.
'Tagore is the architect of the national anthem of both India and Bangladesh," the BJP leader said and demanded exemplary punishment for those who are involved in the shocking incident. The ruling BJP on Saturday held protests at more than six places in seven districts along Tripura's border with Bangladesh.
Senior leaders, including ministers, led the protest rallies in Agartala, Bishalgarh, Udaipur, Belonia, Kailashahar, Dharmanagar and Khowai. BJP sources said that similar protests would also be held on June 16 in all Assembly constituencies in Tripura. State BJP General Secretary and MLA Bhagaban Das, who led a protest rally in Agartala-Akhaura Integrated Check Post, said, 'A barbaric incident of attack and vandalisation at the ancestral home of Rabindranath Tagore in Bangladesh has shocked people in India.'
Das, a former minister, said that such an attack on the shared cultural heritage is totally unacceptable. 'There must be a limit to such atrocious actions. The properties and heritage relating to a towering cultural icon like Tagore have not been spared in Bangladesh. Such acts are an unforgivable crime,' he told the media.
Earlier, Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha also condemned the attack and vandalisation of Tagore's ancestral home in Bangladesh and termed it as an "attack on our culture and heritage". He said that the act was a strongly condemnable and shameful incident for the entire nation. 'The interim government of Bangladesh needs to act strongly,' the Chief Minister said.
On June 8, a mob attacked and vandalised the ancestral home of Rabindranath Tagore in Bangladesh, also known as Rabindra Kachharibari or Rabindra Memorial Museum in Sirajganj district.
Media reports said that the attackers also assaulted a director of the institution. Situated in Shahzadpur in Rajshahi division, Rabindra Kachharibari is the ancestral home and revenue office of the Tagore family. Many of Tagore's literary works came up while living in this mansion.
India's Ministry of External Affairs also on June 12 strongly condemned the vandalism of Tagore's ancestral home in Bangladesh, describing it as part of a 'systematic' pattern by extremists to undermine the country's syncretic cultural heritage. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal termed the June 8 attack on the Rabindra Kachharibari as a 'despicable' act and 'a disgrace to the memory and the inclusive philosophy' of the Nobel Laureate.

Probe drug money trail to catch big fish: Punjab BJP chief Jakhar to CM Mann
Punjab BJP president Sunil Jakhar on Monday wrote to chief minister Bhagwant Mann, seeking a probe under the supervision of the high court chief justice into the drug money trail to track down its powerful end beneficiaries. 'It is imperative to follow the money in the drug money trail, without which the exercise to root out drugs from Punjab is not only futile but a farce as well,' Jakhar said. 'Arresting thousands of drug addicts and small players will not make much difference. The elephant in the room has to be addressed,' he said. Under the Yudh Nashian Virudh campaign launched by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab three-and-a-half months ago, more than 17,000 drug smugglers have been arrested, and large consignments of drugs have been seized. 'The flow of money has to be established to catch the big fish and arrest the end beneficiaries, be it politicians across party lines or officials. The drug cartels in Punjab cannot thrive without patronage,' Jakhar said. 'I'm writing to you with hope and caution to draw your attention towards the criticalness of an urgent probe under the direct supervision of Punjab and Haryana high court chief justice Sheel Nagu to track down the mighty and powerful end beneficiaries in the drug money trail, a primary source that has tormented Punjab,' the BJP leader said. 'This is important if your government wants to establish its credibility and resolve in its fight against drugs,' he added. Jakhar urged Mann to write to the chief justice, seeking his intervention to conduct a time-bound probe by a credible agency, or multiple agencies, under his supervision to uncover the end beneficiaries in the drug money trail. Recovery of narcotics in Punjab goes into several thousand crores of rupees, which underlines the rot that exists, Jakhar said. 'The fortunes of several Punjab politicians have turned in the past few years, which cannot be dismissed as mere coincidence. It raises a lot of stench and suspicion on the source of funding,' he said. The BJP leader claimed that MLAs who rode bicycles now own luxury cars worth crores of rupees. 'Many have farmhouses spread over several acres. Since the quantum of money involved in the drug money trail is colossally huge, it reeks of money laundering, which can be probed by the Enforcement Directorate, or as deemed fit by the chief justice, since it could involve the high and mighty,' Jakhar said. Ministers, MLAs, party presidents, party in-charges, and leaders of all hues should be part of the investigation, he added. 'As the state BJP president, I offer myself to be the first to be probed as a mark of my and my party's sincerity and earnestness,' Jakhar said. 'Not just drug money trail, the probe should also include in its scope the trail of illicit money from mining and sand mafia so that the guilty can be brought to book,' he added.

Centre taking necessary steps for safety of J-K students, traders stranded in Iran: BJP's Ravinder Raina
The Centre has taken necessary steps to ensure safety and security of students and businessmen from Jammu and Kashmir stranded in Iran, BJP leader Ravinder Raina asserted on Monday. Raina, a former president of J-K BJP unit, said many students and their parents have contacted him and he wanted to assure them that they would not be allowed to face any problem and if there is a need, they will be safely evacuated. 'We are very much concerned about the safety and security of our students studying in Iran. Our Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already taken steps to ensure safety of the Indian students and the traders stranded there,' the BJP leader said.
