Coupang makes GPU contract bid, hinting at cloud market entry

Korea Herald30-06-2025
Coupang has made a surprise entry into a government-led bid to secure and operate high-performance graphics processing units, signaling potential ambitions beyond its current e-commerce focus.
The e-commerce giant is among four companies — including Naver Cloud, Kakao Enterprise and NHN Cloud — that have submitted bids for the Ministry of Science and ICT's 1.46 trillion won ($1.07 billion) GPU infrastructure support project, according to industry sources Monday.
Under the initiative, the government plans to purchase 10,000 high-performance GPUs through its first supplementary budget and provide GPU services to companies and researchers over five years. The final operator will be selected next month.
While Coupang declined to comment on its participation, sources view the move as a strategic attempt to gain operational experience in GPU-as-a-service, potentially laying the groundwork for a future pivot into the cloud services market.
"This marks Coupang's first known foray into a government tech infrastructure project of this scale,' said an industry source who requested anonymity. 'Although it has not publicly operated GPUaaS, its internal services like Coupang Play and Coupang Eats have long leveraged GPU resources, possibly helping it meet the eligibility requirements.'
'Coupang, emerging as a dark horse in the recent GPU acquisition initiative, may be strategically aiming to solidify its identity as a competitive cloud service provider through this move. … Otherwise, it's difficult to justify the company's participation in the project, especially considering the massive costs associated with data center space rentals,' the source added.
The unexpected bid has drawn considerable attention, with speculation mounting that Coupang aims to evolve into a cloud service provider, much like Amazon's trajectory from e-commerce to dominance in Amazon Web Services.
Industry watchers have observed that Coupang is stepping up its infrastructure push. The company is reportedly working with Singapore-based Empyrion DC to lease space at the KR1 data center in Seoul's Yangjae area, while accelerating talent acquisition in cloud and GPU operations.
'Coupang has consistently benchmarked Amazon's business model,' said a source familiar with the matter. 'It now appears to be eyeing the next frontier -- emulating AWS.'
Despite the ambitions, skepticism remains. Unlike its competitors, Coupang lacks a track record of large-scale GPU service deployment. Naver Cloud, Kakao Enterprise and NHN Cloud already operate substantial GPU clusters and have established GPUaaS platforms. This could put Coupang at a disadvantage when it comes to technical evaluations.
'Coupang is not disqualified by regulation,' the anonymous source said. 'But its limited hands-on experience with GPU infrastructure could be a critical shortfall.'
Stability remains a priority for the government's GPU project, the official added: 'The ability to quickly recover from system failures is key, and Coupang's capabilities in this area have yet to be publicly proven.'
Industry observers are now watching to see whether Coupang can leverage this opportunity to transform into a next-generation cloud provider and challenge South Korea's established cloud service players.
'Coupang has been heavily investing in infrastructure talent,' another anonymous industry source said. 'If it can gain practical experience through a project of this scale, it could rapidly internalize GPU technology and accelerate its pivot into cloud computing.'

Seoul hotel scene heats up as luxury chains, global funds move in

Rosewood, Mandarin Oriental, Ritz-Carlton plan openings while Goldman Sachs, GIC target mid-scale deals Fueled by a surge in the number of visitors, Seoul's hotel scene is growing more vibrant, drawing in luxury hotel brands and foreign investors looking for a bite of the booming market. Just two or three years ago, many hotel properties had been either converted into office space or closed altogether due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now, with inbound tourism rebounding, hotels are attracting renewed attention. According to data released by the Korea Tourism Organization on July 31, a total of 8.83 million foreign visitors came to Korea between January and June, up 1.12 million from the same period last year. The figure marks a 104 percent recovery from the pre-pandemic level in 2019. An increasing number of top-tier luxury hotel brands are looking to establish a presence in Seoul. Rosewood Seoul is set to open at The Parkside Seoul, a development occupying the former site of the United Nations Command in central Seoul in 2027, while Capella Hotels & Resorts, a Singapore-based hospitality group recognized for its ultra-luxury positioning, will introduce Capella Residences Seoul in southern Seoul in the same year. Though Korea continues to lack an Aman property -- renowned for its ultra-luxury offerings -- Aman Group is set to make its first foray into Korea through its second brand, Janu, with two upcoming properties: one in Seoul and another on Jeju Island in 2027. Korea will become Janu's sixth global destination and its second in Northeast Asia following Tokyo. Although Janu Seoul was initially expected to be developed at a site near Seoul Station, the plan has fallen through. The property is now likely to be located in Cheongdam, an affluent district in southern Seoul. Instead, a Mandarin Oriental hotel will step into the Seoul Station development site by 2029, becoming the brand's first location here. The Ritz-Carlton, a top-tier franchise under hotel giant Marriott International, is set to open at the redeveloped Millennium Hilton Seoul site in central Seoul by 2031. 'Seoul was once said to lack true luxury hotels, but its luxury hospitality landscape is now evolving rapidly,' an official from a local real estate asset manager said. 'This trend is fueled by the city's appeal to both international visitors and the affluent domestic population.' Mid-scale deals surge Along with rising demand for accommodation, four-star properties are seeing an increase in foreign investor interest as well. The improved profitability of mid-range and budget hotels could be the main driver behind the appeal. A recent report by global real estate services firm JLL showed that revenue per available room at such hotels in Seoul rose 23.4 percent last year from a year earlier, outpacing the 14.4 percent growth seen in luxury hotels. 'Foreign investors are lining up to inquire about investing in local hotel properties,' said a banker specializing in offshore investments. 'While foreign investors have traditionally focused on high-end hotels given their scale of investments, they are now expanding their interest to smaller, mid-scale properties as well.' In July, Goldman Sachs co-acquired the Mercure Ambassador Hotel Hongdae for 262 billion won ($187 million) with local asset manager JB Asset Management. The four-star hotel located in the vibrant Hongdae district in western Seoul marks the equity giant's inaugural hotel investment in Korea. Earlier this year, Singapore's sovereign wealth fund GIC was selected as the preferred bidder to acquire three properties operated by Glad Hotel & Resort -- Glad Yeouido, Glad Gangnam Coex Center and Maison Glad Jeju -- in a deal estimated at a total of 600 billion won ($437 million). The Glad brand, under the wings of local builder DL Group, is positioned in the mid-scale segment. 'Visitor arrivals continue to recover strongly, with the value of existing hotels on an upward trend due to limited new supply and rising development costs. These factors will ensure an active hotel acquisition and disposition market,' Clair Choi, head of research at global real estate service firm CBRE, noted in a recent report.

Hanwha Asset ramps up platform strategy with top hires

Hanwha Asset Management has hired two senior executives to spearhead its expansion into global real estate and infrastructure platforms, stepping up its play in alternative investments. The Seoul-based firm appointed Song Yong-wan, formerly head of the global investment team at Samsung SRA Asset Management, and Park Dong-hyuk, director of alternative investments at Keppel Investment & Management, as executive directors, according to industry sources on Thursday. As joint group heads, they will oversee real estate and infrastructure deals, respectively, in a new platform investment group. Song previously worked on real estate investments at Blackstone, Singapore's GIC and ESR Kendall Square, before joining Samsung SRA in 2022. He has managed deals across nine regions worldwide, spanning European logistics warehouses, commercial buildings and Japanese residential properties, and is recognized for his global network and deal-making track record. Park most recently ran alternative investments at Keppel, a Temasek-backed private equity firm with about $65 billion under management. He earlier worked in M&A advisory at KB Securities and led the infrastructure finance team at KB Kookmin Bank. At Keppel, he oversaw platform bets in data centers, renewables, waste management and senior housing, and is regarded for his skill in handling complex stakeholder negotiations. The hires highlight Hanwha's pivot from project-based property and infrastructure deals to scalable platform strategies. Since 2017, the firm has been building on its global alternatives arm, with 22.5 trillion won ($16 billion) in such assets under management as of July. The platform investment group is anticipated to deepen Hanwha Asset's expertise in the field, while boosting competitiveness and supporting overseas expansion. 'We set up the group to move into higher value-added areas of alternatives and brought in global experts to lead it,' a company spokesperson said. 'We will keep seeking top talents to strengthen competitiveness and reinforce our position in global markets.'

DKSH Healthcare Establishes Industry Benchmark in Carbon Emissions Tracking in Thailand

DKSH Business Unit Healthcare has reached a significant milestone in building a more sustainable healthcare supply chain by successfully tracking carbon emissions across its value chain through a collaboration with UOB FinLab's GreenTech Accelerator and Smart Tradzt in Thailand. This achievement also marks the implementation of a reusable cold-chain packaging solution. The initiative underscores DKSH Healthcare's ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility and its proactive approach to advancing sustainable business practices. BANGKOK, Aug. 20, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- DKSH Business Unit Healthcare has achieved a significant milestone by successfully measuring Scope 3 carbon emissions within its supply chain in Thailand. This initiative was accomplished through a collaboration with UOB FinLab's GreenTech Accelerator and Smart Tradzt, a Singapore-based sustainability technology provider. Scope 3 emissions, representing indirect greenhouse gas emissions from sources across the value chain, constitute a substantial proportion of the total healthcare and logistics emissions. Accurately tracking these emissions is important but remains a complex task. Recognizing this challenge, DKSH Business Unit Healthcare tapped on UOB FinLab's GreenTech Accelerator, a regional program which resulted in 16 successful pilots across Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand between corporations and innovative startups to address regional sustainability issues in the areas of energy, sustainability reporting and carbon management, circular economy and waste management, food and agriculture, sustainable cities and urban planning. UOB FinLab provided financial support, mentorship and access to community networks for Smart Tradzt, reducing costs for DKSH to undertake this comprehensive assessment. The collaboration saw DKSH Healthcare Thailand partner with Smart Tradzt to utilize their digital platform for executing a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), providing a comprehensive view of the environmental impact of its operations and suggestions on sustainable processes optimizations. The analysis adhered to internationally recognized standards, including the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol and PACT Methodology, covering all life cycle stages from material sourcing to manufacturing, distribution, product use, and disposal. Despite facing operational challenges such as limited LCA awareness from small scale suppliers resulting in more limited data availability and limited visibility into end-user disposal practices, the LCA showed clear results – DKSH Healthcare's reusable cold-chain packaging solution, B-Box, demonstrated a significant reduction in carbon emissions over its lifecycle. Specifically, its reusable B-40 box recorded emissions of almost 27.19 kg CO₂e per box over five years, establishing a clear advantage over single-use Styrofoam alternative which recorded roughly 5.03 kg CO₂e per box. Building upon these results, DKSH Business Unit Healthcare will be able to more effectively disclose the impact of avoided carbon emissions as it expands its reusable packaging to other markets. This increasing transparency across the value chain is a milestone benchmark for what can be explored across the region. Ultimately, sustainability tracking initiatives will assist clients and partners in addressing growing regulatory and stakeholder demands for accurate environmental reporting and sustainability accountability across value chains. Bijay Singh, Global Head Business Unit Healthcare, DKSH, commented: "Our collaboration with Smart Tradzt and UOB FinLab details the importance we place on the topic of sustainability. Even as we continue to advance our goal of achieving equitable healthcare across Asia Pacific, we are committed to keeping our supply chain transparent and accountable. Scope 3 carbon emissions remain complex and require deep value chain collaboration. As healthcare partners, this initiative not only help us in meeting the growing regulations, they also let our clients and partners see tangible datapoints which can be used for their own reporting. Whilst challenging, this step is a showcase for our commitment to value chain transparency and sustainability." Shannon Lung, Head of UOB FinLab, added: "At UOB FinLab, we are proud to serve as a community enabler, helping companies like DKSH Healthcare accelerate their sustainability journeys. Through our GreenTech Accelerator and other outreach programs, we connect corporates with innovative solutions that drive measurable impact.
