The labour contractor's son was among the two minors accompanying the 17-year-old driver of the high-end car at the time of the accident, which claimed the lives of two young software engineers at Kalyaninagar. Police's case is that the jeweller friend gave his blood sample to swap with that of the contractor's minor son.

On Wednesday, defence lawyers Abid Mulani and Sitesh Sharma, while countering state's arguments opposing bail to the two accused, said their clients never gave the money to manipulate the blood tests as claimed by police. The lawyers argued that the bail pleas ought to be accepted on the grounds that the duo's arrest was illegal and that they should be given parity with the teenage driver's mother, who was granted ad interim bail by the Supreme Court on April 22.
The lawyers claimed that police planted the bribe money to create a false case of criminal conspiracy against their clients and played with the criminal justice system. There is no evidence to suggest that the accused entered into a conspiracy with the co-accused in the crash case and swapped the blood samples of the minor boys at Sassoon General Hospital, the lawyers said.
Special public prosecutor Shishir Hiray, who appeared before the court through videoconferencing, sought time until May 3 to counter the defence lawyer's arguments.
After the court proceeding, assistant commissioner of police (crime) Ganesh Ingale told TOI that the allegations by the defence lawyers are false and baseless. "There is evidence of bank statements and statements of witnesses to show that Rs2 lakh was paid to manipulate the blood sample reports of the minors. The grounds relating to arresting the accused were communicated to them in writing, and their signatures were taken on arrest forms that were part of the supplementary chargesheets."
The accused cannot claim bail on the grounds of parity because the Supreme Court order in the teenager's mother's case is an interlocutory order, not a final order, Ingale added.

The Supreme Court set aside a Karnataka High Court order granting bail to seven of the 17 accused in the murder of Renukaswamy, a Chitradurga resident. Renukaswamy's body was found near a stormwater drain close to Sumanahalli in west Bengaluru on June 9, 2024. Subsequent investigations led to the arrest of 17 people, including Darshan and his friend Pavithra Gowda. Police filed a charge sheet in September, after which Darshan and six others approached the Karnataka High Court and were granted bail on October 30, 2024. Bengaluru police later petitioned the Supreme Court seeking cancellation of their bail. On Thursday, the apex court ruled in favour of Bengaluru police, leading to the re-arrest of all the accused. Pavithra was the first to be detained from her residence in RR Nagar, followed by other accused, including Pradosh, Lakshman, and Nagaraj. Darshan was arrested from his wife's apartment in Hosakerehalli, south Bengaluru, where he had gone to visit his wife and son.

Man dies after bike hits bus
Trichy: A 49-year-old man died after his motorcycle hit a private bus near Panjapur terminus in Trichy on Friday. Police said V Michael Raj from Mekkudi near Nagamangalam worked as a security guard in a public sector company near Thiruverumbur. He was a driver in the Indian armed forces before taking a voluntary retirement in 2021. On Friday morning, Michael Raj was returning home from work. When he was passing by the integrated bus terminus in Panjapur, he was knocked down by a private bus and died on the spot, police said. Police sent Michael Raj's body to Trichy General Hospital for autopsy. Trichy traffic police registered a case and are investigating. Coimbatore contract sanitary workers threaten to intensify protest
COIMBATORE: The city corporation's contract sanitary workers associated with various trade unions said they would resume their protests on Saturday to press for their demands. The workers said they would intensify their protest next week. The workers' demands include a hike in their wages. They demand that the corporation make their job permanent. The workers alleged that there was caste-based discrimination at the workplace. On Thursday, more than 30 sanitary workers were detained by the city police when they staged a road roko on the Town Hall Road. They were released in the evening. Santhanam Kumar, a contract worker who was among those who were detained on Thursday, told TOI that though the workers had planned a mass gathering, not many turned up. "The workers were warned they would be suspended. We submitted a letter on Aug 13 that we would be protesting for our rights on Thursday.
