MCMC probes influencer over alleged spread of false information on royal institution

By: Bernama Text Size: KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) is conducting an investigation against a social media influencer over the alleged dissemination of false information involving the Royal Institution. According to MCMC, two sessions of recording statements and further investigation involving the individual were carried out at MCMC's headquarters in Cyberjaya on Friday and today, following public complaints received under the provisions of the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA) 1998. "Initial investigations found that the content linked to the influencer involved the dissemination of false information linking the Royal Institution with baseless allegations. "There were also attempts to disclose personal information without consent, with the intent to annoy, harass, threaten, or disturb any person," the statement read. The statement further noted that such actions could potentially cause public unrest, incite slander, pose threats to the safety of the individuals involved, and violate communication laws and personal data protection. MCMC stressed that all complaints would be investigated in accordance with the law, regardless of an individual's status, popularity or influence. "Every investigation is conducted professionally, based on fair procedures and in accordance with the legal provisions under the CMA 1998, and serves as an initial step to gather related information," MCMC said. The group was then reported to MCMC as well as the police. Influencer Wee Yun Nee, also known as Mekyun, spoke out about the issue as well after realising that photos from her childhood were also circulating on the page. Advertisement The group's circulation of children's images without consent for the purpose of inciting sexual harassment violates both the Child Act 2001 and Section 211 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which pertains to 'offensive content'.

Motorcyclist dies under 8-ton lorry in Inanam crash

The victim was found pinned under the lorry and had been removed by members of the public before emergency services arrived. Man charged with trafficking drugs

Kota Kinabalu: A 31-year-old man was tentatively charged in the Magistrate's Court here on Wednesday with trafficking drugs. However, no plea was recorded from Alsafi Amir Hassan, who appeared before Magistrate Dzul Elmy Yunus, after the charge was read out to him. Advertisement Alsafi was accused of trafficking 51.85gm of 3,4 Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) on May 28, this year, at 12.10pm, in a room of an entertainment outlet, Lorong Pavilion Bundusan, Penampang. The charge under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) 1952, carries a punishment of either the death penalty or life imprisonment and whipping with a minimum of 15 strokes of the cane. The court fixed July 23 for mention pending the chemist's report. Alsafi was ordered to be remanded further pending the date as the charge against him has no provision for bail. Meanwhile, a 26-year-old man claimed trial to assisting in hiding a stolen vehicle. Mohd Hafieszul Mohd Adnin pleaded not guilty to helping in hiding a stolen Toyota Hilux belonging to Nawie Oilfield Services Sdn Bhd on June 3, this year, at 10.45pm, at Kg Lembaga Padi area, Jalan Lintas here. The charge is framed under Section 414 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of between six months and seven years and liable to a fine, on conviction. Hafieszul was offered bail of RM2,500 in two sureties pending pre-trial case management on July 23. In another case, four men were penalised for having syabu. Khairul Anwar Abd Rahman, Rizal Usman, Abd Umbing and Abd Sham pleaded guilty to having syabu weighing between 3.1gm and 0.15gm, at separate locations here between Jan 28 and Feb 4, this year. Khairul, Rizal, Abd Umbing and Abd Sham were jailed 12 months, 10 months, eight months and seven months, respectively. They were charged under Section 12 (2) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952, which provides for a fine of up to RM100,000 or up to five years' jail, or both, on conviction. Khairul and Rizal also pleaded guilty to taking drugs under Section 15(1) of the Dangerous Drug Act, which provides for a fine of up to RM5,000 or up to two years' jail, on conviction.
