Aaron-Soh rally to secure second round spot in Thai Open 2025
BANGKOK: National men's doubles pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik powered into the second round of the Thailand Open 2025 after defeating France's Julien Maio and William Villeger today.
The reigning Asian men's doubles champions needed over an hour to secure a hard-fought 22-24, 21-19, 21-15 victory.
Aaron acknowledged that playing after midnight had affected their performance, particularly in the opening game, but they managed to recover in the subsequent games.
'We are happy that we managed to make a comeback and advance to the next round,' he told Bernama at the Nimibutr Stadium today.
Soh added that they are still adapting to their new coach, Herry Iman Pierngadi, and his tactical approach.
'This is only our second or third tournament under coach Herry, and we hope to perform well and deliver results,' he said.
Aaron-Soh are expected to face the winners of the match between Taiwan's Lu Ming Che-Tang Kai Wei and Japan's Hiroki Midorikawa-Kyohei Yamashita, scheduled later.
Meanwhile, in an earlier match, Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King advanced to the second round after overcoming India's Pruthvi Krishnamurthy and Sai Pratheek in a gruelling encounter, winning 22-20, 17-21, 21-18 in over an hour.
Wan Arif admitted that nerves affected their performance, leading to a subpar display.
'Our defence was poor, our shots lacked quality, and we committed too many unforced errors. If we can progress further, I hope we can play better in the upcoming matches,' he said.
Wan Arif also revealed that he and his partner have set a target of reaching at least the quarter-finals in this tournament.
Wan Arif and Yap will next face compatriots Kang Khai Xing-Aaron Tai, who defeated Thailand's Pharanyu Kaosamaang and Tanadon Punpanich 12-21, 21-13, 21-15 in 58 minutes.

Cklamovski coy on Harimau Malaya's new heritage players
KUALA LUMPUR: The status of several new heritage players rumoured to be joining Harimau Malaya ahead of their Asian Cup qualifier against Vietnam on 10 June remains uncertain. "The America forward is expected to report on Tuesday for his first training camp with the national team," Sierra posted. Time trial ace Aiman eyes Sea Games breakthrough
KUALA LUMPUR: Nur Aiman Rosli has set his sights on winning Sea Games gold after enjoying his best-ever outing at the National Road Cycling Championships which concluded in Johor yesterday (June 1). Muar-born Aiman achieved a prestigious double-gold feat in Pagoh, winning both the men's individual time trial for a sixth time as well as clinching his breakthrough victory in the road race. "Winning in my hometown, on the roads I grew up riding definitely meant a lot to me," said Aiman when contacted today (June 2). "I had come close to winning the road race a number of times previously and was finally able to do it this year." Aiman has gone from strength to strength since joining Terengganu Cycling Team (TSG) at the end of the 2023 season. He finished fourth in the Asian Championships road race in Almaty, Kazakhstan last year and has placed in the top-10 in the individual time trial at the Asian meet for the last two years. The 26-year-old is now hoping to achieve a breakthrough victory at the Thailand Sea Games in December. "For the Sea Games, my target is to win gold in either the time trial or road race. I had won bronze previously (Hanoi 2021), so in my third appearance at the games I want to win gold. "For the time trial, I believe Thailand's Peerapol Chawchiangkwang will again be one of the favourites while Indonesia's Aiman Cahyadi will also be right up there. "Peerapol is the defending champion and he will also have home ground advantage. Aiman has won it before and is very experienced. "I was the second fastest Southeast Asian rider (behind Peerapol) at the Asian Championships (Thailand, Feb), which gives me a good baseline to work on. "I've been told the time trial route is relatively flat which should give me a chance to fight for the gold. I will definitely give it my best." Peerapol won the individual time trial gold when the discipline was last included at the 2021 Hanoi Sea Games - held in 2022 due to Covid-19 - when Aiman placed third. Beckham Calls Out Man United Players' Malaysia Conduct
ENGLAND football legend David Beckham has criticised the uncivilised actions of several Manchester United players during their visit to Malaysia last week. Beckham, speaking to CBS Sports in an interview recently, indirectly referred to two players from the legendary club, Amad Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho, who were captured showing disrespect towards fans during their Asian tour. 'I felt there were many things that were unacceptable as a Manchester United supporter. 'This is because most of them (players) behaved inappropriately towards the fans,' he said in the clip.
