District-Level Training Begins for Water Bodies Census Using Mobile App: Emphasis on Accurate Data for Policy Planning
He made these remarks on Saturday during a district-level training program conducted at the IDOC Video Conference Hall. The session was held in connection with the 7th Minor Irrigation Census and the 2nd Water Bodies Census pertaining to the 2023–2024 agricultural year.
Significance of the Census Explained
Addressing the gathering, Yoganand elaborated on the importance of enumerating minor irrigation sources and water bodies. He noted that collecting data on underground and surface water resources in villages—including ponds, tanks, farm pits, wells, and other sources—would help develop a holistic perspective on rural water security.
He highlighted a key feature of this census: for the first time, the enumeration will be conducted through a mobile app-based, paperless approach, and data will be entered based on the LGD (Local Government Directory) code for each village.
Departmental Collaboration
The enumeration of farm ponds (buggalu) will be carried out with the assistance of the Groundwater Department, while the medium and major irrigation sources will be covered under the supervision of the Irrigation Department.

District Collector Urges Students to Pursue Education with Discipline to Achieve Great Heights
Gadwal: District Collector B.M. Santosh emphasized that students who attend classes regularly with discipline and dedication can rise to great heights in life. On Tuesday, the Collector made a surprise inspection of the Zilla Parishad High School in Maladkal mandal. During the visit, he inspected classrooms, school surroundings, the midday meal facilities, food quality, science lab, and other amenities. Speaking on the occasion, the Collector stated that the government is giving utmost priority to the education sector. He stressed that every student studying in government schools should receive quality education along with nutritious food as per the prescribed menu. The Collector added that necessary facilities, teacher appointments, quality teaching, and infrastructure are being provided to ensure this. He urged teachers to pay special attention to students' academic abilities and health, and to ensure that students attend school regularly. 'If students listen attentively to their teachers and practice with discipline, even an average student can become an IAS officer, a scientist, or a leader guiding society,' said the Collector. He noted that there are 104 students enrolled in 10th grade this academic year and expressed the goal that all should pass and achieve 100% results. Expressing disappointment that no student scored above 540 marks last year, he motivated the students to perform better this year. He also announced that those achieving top scores will be felicitated at district-level programs. The Collector encouraged students to make the most of the opportunities provided by the government and move forward with a clear plan. He expressed happiness that the school was selected under the PM SHRI scheme and assured that all required facilities for the students' welfare would be provided. Teachers were instructed to conduct special classes to ensure that students thoroughly understand their lessons. Additionally, the quality of food served must be mandatorily verified by the school's quality committee before being distributed. The Collector also highlighted that while the district stood 32nd in the state rankings last year, it has now improved to 23rd position, with a goal to reach at least 15th place next year. He pointed out that many renowned individuals have risen to prominence from government schools, including from the Government Boys' School in Gadwal. He concluded by encouraging students to dream big and take small, consistent steps every day toward achieving their goals. Plans afoot to resume SLBC tunnel work soon as Irrigation Dept. ropes in experts from Army
HYDERABAD The Irrigation Department is planning to resume work at the earliest on the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel, which was halted on February 22 following collapse of the tunnel roof, about 14 km inside from the mouth, near Domalapenta, in Nagarkurnool district, burying 8 workers alive. Another 10 km tunnel is to be excavated to meet the work done from the other side. This was decided at a meeting held here on Saturday by Minister for Irrigation and Civil Supplies N. Uttam Kumar Reddy for an in-depth review of the pending work. The 43.931 km tunnel work was taken up from two sides – from Srisailam reservoir side near Domalapenta, and from Dindi balancing reservoir on the other side. The work was stopped in 2023 following a problem in the tunnel boring machine (TBM) from Dindi reservoir side. It was stopped in the Domalapenta side much earlier, again due to some problems in the TBM. It was resumed on February 22 after replacing some parts of the TBM in the Domalapent end, but within four days, the roof collapse incident took place. Only two of the 8 bodies were recovered before the rescue operation was abandoned in April-end, following the advice of the experts over the danger in taking up debris removal in the last 50 meters of the tunnel excavated from Domalapenta side. The Minister stated that drilling and blasting (excavation) was to be taken up in an estimated 10 km length for completing the tunnel. Terming SLBC lifeline for Southern parts of Telangana, he said its completion must be treated as a top priority and executed with urgency. He explained that the SLBC tunnel would be taken up/resumed using the latest electromagnetic survey technology in collaboration with the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) and the Geological Survey of India (GSI). To ensure precise planning and seamless execution, he instructed the officials to expedite the (aerial) LiDAR survey. Earlier in the day, he had a meeting with a team of NGRI scientists to finalise the technical modalities of the survey. He reiterated that cost would not be a constraint, but highest quality and speed must be maintained at every level. The meeting also marked the first formal interaction with Col. Parikshit Mehra, an acclaimed tunnel engineering expert who recently joined the Irrigation Department on deputation. The Minister expressed confidence that Col. Mehra's expertise would help resolve long-pending technical challenges and fast-track completion of the SLBC and other key tunnel projects. He stated that Gen. Harpal Singh, former Engineer-in-Chief of the Indian Army, too would be appointed as an honorary Advisor in the Irrigation Department soon to strengthen the department's technical capacity and tunnel execution capabilities. The Minister also reviewed the progress of de-siltation and de-sedimentation works across the Krishna and Godavari basins, which he said were essential to enhance/restore the storage capacity and improve water management. He pointed out that water storage capacity of several irrigation projects had come down drastically due to sedimentation and silt accumulation.
