Stepping up for those in need: United Supermarkets, Market Street deliver 1,000 pairs of socks to Salvation Army
MIDLAND/ODESSA, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- A thousand pairs of socks are making their way to those in need after United Supermarkets and Market Street donated 500 pairs each to the Salvation Army of Midland and the Salvation Army of Odessa on Wednesday.
The donation, according to United Supermarkets, marks the sixth year The United Family has partnered with Rainier Fruit to support local communities through the 'Apples and Pears on a Mission' program. The initiative runs throughout the fall and winter months, with a portion of proceeds from Rainier Fruit pears and apples going toward purchasing socks for homeless assistance organizations.
'For some, a new pair of socks can make a world of difference,' Joseph Bunting, produce business director for The United Family said. 'That's why we are so grateful to partner with Rainier Fruits to do this program for the sixth year. We are also thankful to our guests for participating and helping us positively impact our community.'
The Permian Basin donation is one of six sock donations made across Texas this year. In total, The United Family and Rainier Fruit will provide 5,000 pairs of socks to charitable organizations statewide.
Over the past six years, the program has donated more than 30,000 pairs of socks to help those in need.

Local food bank receives 1.9K pounds of apples through donation program
SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — The Concho Valley Regional Food Bank has received 1,920 pounds of apples as part of The United Family's Take A Bite Out of Hunger program. The United Family, also known as United Supermarkets, stated that the donation is part of the 50,000 pounds of apples donated across Texas and New Mexico through the program. This year's donation marks the 15th year of the program, which has facilitated the donation of more than 650,000 pounds of apples through a partnership between The United Family and FirstFruits Farms. 'The United Family feels very blessed to be in the position to make these donations for the fifteenth year in a row,' Joseph Bunting, produce business director for The United Family, said. 'We know how important donations of fresh produce can be for food banks and their clients.' Over $4M raised through San Angelo Gives 2025 Sarah Eckel, director of outreach and development for the Concho Valley Regional Food Bank, said the apples were donated through Market Street, a store chain owned by The United Family. She said the food bank has received apples through the program for multiple years, adding that this recent donation was larger than those given in previous years. 'We really appreciate the fact that United continues to be committed to fighting hunger with Concho Valley Food Bank here locally, and we very much appreciate any donation of food that we are able to send out to our neighbors,' Eckel said. Eckel shared that the apples will be offered to families within the 13 counties that the food bank serves through programs, food pantries, direct distributions and more. 'They're really great for kids, adults,' Eckel said. 'Everyone loves apples, so I think it's just something that people really appreciate, that fresh fruit.' The work continues for the Concho Valley Regional Food Bank, though. The food bank plans to host its Stamp Out Hunger food drive on Saturday, May 10. United Supermarkets aids Wichita Falls Area Food Bank in hunger fight
WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — United Supermarkets has continued to fight hunger by generously donating to the Wichita Falls Area Food Bank. On Monday, May 5, the grocery chain donated nearly 3,900 pounds of apples. Over the years, WFAFB has received 650,000 pounds of apples from United. Food Bank CEO David O'Neil said the bank's commonality of serving the 12-county area helps it continue to serve the food-insecure. 'When we get a donation of this size, it warms our hearts for everybody here at the food bank, our board, and all of those who invest in us, because that's our mission,' O'Neil said. The mobile teaching kitchen also gave samples of a recipe that uses apples. The non-profit posts a weekly video of fresh recipes for everyone to try.
