
IMD to buy two Isro satellites to help improve weather forecast
These new satellites will replace IMD's two third-generation INSAT satellites by 2028-29 and at cost of ₹ 1,800 crore, said IMD director general Mrutyunjay Mohapatra in an interview.
The upgraded satellites will give a better resolution of images and be equipped with state-of-the-art sensors for lightning forecasting, said Mohapatra.
As many as 162 people were killed by lightning strikes in March and April.
Mohapatra said, "In remote areas like oceans, hills, the Himalayas and polar regions, one cannot take observations by putting up the instruments. So, here the department goes for the remote sensing instruments like radars and satellites.
'Radars have limitations because a radar can cover only up to 500 kilometers at any particular place and you cannot put radar in the sea or hill peaks where you do not have any communication system or roads or water. So therefore, a satellite becomes very handy though its accuracy is less as compared to the ground truth and radars.'
IMD has been using satellite technology extensively for weather monitoring and forecasting. This started with the use of photographs from Television Infrared Observation Satellites (TIROS-1) launched by the US in 1960.
The two satellites currently used by IMD have a one-kilometer in visible range and 4 km infrared range.
'Then we have cascaded these two satellites so that every 15 minutes you get an image. The satellite is geostationary. Apart from this there are other sensors in the satellite which provide other information like say winds and humidity, water vapour you can say. So, these information's we get it from our own satellites,'
IMD also gets data from European, Japanese and Korean satellites. According to him, there is a cooperation among the countries that is called coordinated group of meteorological satellites.
However, there are still gaps in detecting small-scale weather events, such as cloudbursts, thunderstorms, and lightning due to a lack of high-resolution data, products, and satellite-based tools. "Considering this, Isro would be developing INSAT-4 series with better sensors and resolution," said Mohapatra.
The assimilation of satellite data in the models has improved the accuracy in short to medium range forecasting by about 20% to 30%, according to IMD.

From Space to industry: Isro's tech boosts A'bad firms
Ahmedabad: Three industries in Ahmedabad have acquired cutting-edge technologies originally developed by the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro). These advancements, which include enhanced sub-surface mapping, early pest infestation detection and high-temperature resistant ceramics, were officially transferred on Thursday under tripartite technology transfer agreements (TTAs). The agreements between recipient industries, IN-SPACe and New Space India Ltd (NSIL) were signed at the IN-SPACe headquarters in Ahmedabad. In all, six technologies were transferred. "The transfer of these technologies marks a significant step towards empowering the private sector to harness and commercialize space technologies. Isro has a flourishing repository of R&D in space technologies, and it is time we leverage that to the optimum to strengthen India's space industrial ecosystem, and in that, industry-led innovation will play a key role," said Dr Pawan Goenka, Chairman of IN-SPACe. Rajeev Jyoti, director (technical directorate), IN-SPACe, told TOI that in all, 93 technology transfer agreements have been executed so far. "These technologies are in the upstream, downstream or midstream of the space ecosystem. They will give a major boost to tech development in the industries," he said, adding that several of these technologies were transferred to industries in Gujarat. Two advanced inertial sensors — laser gyroscope and ceramic servo accelerometer — were also provided to Hyderabad-based Zetatek Technologies Pvt Ltd as part of tech transfer. Officials said that it is the first such transfer of niche tech which is often imported by different sectors in India. Additionally, two other Hyderabad-based companies, Avantel and Jisnu Communications, received technology transfers for communication and ground station operations, which can be applied in both space and defence sectors.

2 killed in Jamnagar; 350 relocated, over 30 villages put on alert in Banaskantha
WHILE two deaths were reported in Jamnagar district, more than 30 villages in Dhanera and Tharad talukas along the Rail river in Banaskantha were put on alert following heavy rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday. Also, 19 panchayat roads in Banaskantha were closed. Two male labourers from Madhya Pradesh died after being struck by lightning on Thursday in Sevak Dhuniya village in Lalpur taluka in Jamnagar, Collector K B Thakkar told The Indian Express. He said that two others were taken to the district hospital for treatment after they sustained burn injuries. Meanwhile, Banaskantha Collector Mihir Patel told The Indian Express that 350 people were relocated from villages of Palanpur taluka in Banaskantha district on Thursday. In the last 24 hours ending at 5 pm on Thursday, Vadgam, Palanpur and Dantiwada talukas received 8.6 inch, 6.1 inch and 6 inch of rainfall, respectively. 'All schools in talukas of Palanpur, Vadgam, Dhanera, Amirgadh and Deesa were closed on Thursday. No casualty, however, was reported. The situation is under control,' Patel also said. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert in Banaskantha for July 6, along with Sabarkantha and Aravalli. As per an IMD forecast, while the state is expected to receive heavy rainfall till July 9, an orange alert has been issued in the districts of Sabarkantha and Aravalli for July 5 and Navsari and Valsad for July 7 and 8. Districts of Banaskantha and Sabarkantha received heavy rainfall till 6 pm on Thursday. While Idar in Sabarkantha recorded 5.5 inch (140 mm) of rainfall, Dhanera recieved 116 mm, Dantiwada 81 mm, Vadgam 81 mm, Palanpur in Banaskantha district received 63 mm. Other districts in Saurashtra region including Rajkot, Jamnagar, Surendranagar, Botad and Junagadh received heavy rainfall on Thursday. In theses dictricts, Jamkandorna recieved 110 mm rainfall, Dhoraji 83 mm, Jodiya 101 mm, Lalpur 86 mm, Chuda 84 mm, Wadhwan 78 mm, Bhiloda 67 mm, Vadnagar 65 mm, Jetpur 64 mm, Rajkot 62 mm, Ranpur 58 mm, Kalavad 57 mm. As per the IMD, the state continues to be on alert owing to the 'monsoon trough that continues to pass through Bikaner, Sheopur, Khajuraho, Daltonganj, Digha and thence east southeastwards to northeast Bay of Bengal, cyclonic circulation over central parts of west Rajasthan, trough from northeast Arabian sea to northwest Bay of Bengal across Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, the cyclonic circulation over north Odisha adjoining Gangetic west Bengal between tilting south-westwards'.
