A petition has been launched to reinstate direct flights from Edinburgh to Gibraltar, spurred by a man based in Scotland who told of the "expensive and time consuming" trek he must undertake to visit family in Gibraltar.
Brandon Phillips, 27, travels to Gibraltar up to five times per year to visit his parents. He decided to launch the campaign after becoming fed up with hefty £600 travel costs, which he calls "inconvenient" and "financially burdensome".
There are currently no direct flights connecting Scotland and Gibraltar, a UK territory located in southern Spain.
Scots wishing to travel to the region must catch direct flights from cities such as Manchester or London, or grab a seat on a plane from Scotland to a city nearby Gibraltar, which can be hours away by coach or car.

Brandon told Edinburgh Live: "There are no direct flights from Scotland to Gibraltar which is quite strange. My family are [in Gibraltar] and I am in Scotland and it is very hard to make time to see each other."
Without direct Scottish flights, he says "You have to plan it very well for it to work."
Brandon spoke to Edinburgh Live from Gibraltar where he is currently visiting family. To get there, he and his partner flew from Manchester to Malaga in Spain. They then grabbed a coach to Gibraltar, which takes nearly three hours and costs up around €60 per person. Round trip, Brandon and his partner were left about £600 out of pocket for one visit.
He added: "All we want to do is fly from one British territory from another British territory and that should be easy enough to do. A whole part of the UK isn't able to travel to Gibraltar as easy as everyone else."

Scottish travellers run into other roadblocks while attempting to enter Gibraltar. Brandon spoke of hassle when crossing borders between the EU and the UK.
He said: "We get stamped when we arrive in Malaga then we get stamped in Gibraltar because we're leaving Spain. On the way back, we get two more stamps. It's four stamp per trip, a whole page in a passport. I have to renew my passport soon because the stamps have filled it up."
EasyJet previously operated direct flights from Edinburgh to Gibraltar but now their services run from London Gatwick, Birmingham, Manchester, and Bristol. British Airways also offers service from English cities like Manchester.
Brandon and his partner usually opt for indirect flights from Glasgow to Spain to avoid paying for parking in Manchester.
He added: "There's such a huge connection between Scotland and Gibraltar.
"It [used to be] easy and affordable [to travel from Scotland to Gibraltar] and we travelled quite a lot to see each other. The flights were always full and busy. I come from an aviation background for RyanAir and British Airways and know what the aviation industry is like, the demand was there."
A spokesperson from easyJet said: "We concentrate our efforts on routes that prove most popular with customers, focusing on those with the highest demand. We continue to serve customers in the UK with flights to Gibraltar from London Gatwick, Birmingham, Manchester, and Bristol."

In the review section, one visitor commented: "Had a fantastic breakfast at Ron's today. Lovely English produce. Great service. Brilliant staff. "A massive group came in, but they were serviced promptly. Don't know how they manage with so few staff." Another shared their experience: "Last day we visited for some lunch before heading to airport. Left full, which is always a good thing. In all my times of going here, never left unhappy at the service nor the food - always really good." A third reviewer added: "We went many times during our two-week holiday. The staff are friendly and extremely hard working day and night. "Cheapest drinks you will find in town and food to suit everyone (daily deal only 6 euros). It's not a stylish 5* restaurant but then you wouldn't expect it. "For drinks just go to the bar like a normal bar. Always busy Sunday and Friday, so expect to book if you want a Sunday lunch. The flights from London Luton to Funchal take three hours and 55 minutes. According to easyJet, it can by pretty foggy in Funchal first thing in the morning, but this clears up by the afternoon so the sun can shine through. In the summer months, the sun doesn't set until 9pm, so you've got plenty of time each day to make the most of the glorious weather. The Met Office explains that the city experiences year-round warmth, but like any holiday hotspot, the summer months are the best time to go if you're looking for hot temperatures. The weather experts say: 'The summer months are perfect if you are looking for sunshine and temperatures which are hot, but not too hot. July and August are the warmest, sunniest and driest months. 'During the winter, temperatures drop slightly although they are still very warm by UK standards during this time of year. Weather systems occasionally affect the island, mainly outside of the summer months; bringing cloudier skies and some rainfall from time to time.' The average daily maximum temperature in July is 25.5C and in August it's 26.4C. This drops to a daily average maximum temperature of 19C in January and 18.8C in February. You certainly won't struggle to find things to fill your time during a trip to Funchal, from enjoying pretty beaches, to taking cable car rides up the mountains, picnicking in the parks, shopping in the city, perusing food markets and tucking into delicious delicacies. The most popular beaches are Praia Formosa and Calheta. The former is the largest public beach the city offers and is actually a complex made up of four beaches. Located in west Funchal, a 10-minute drive from the city centre, you'll find a mixture of pebbles and dark sand here and it's a good option for those who want to go swimming or surfing. Nearby, you'll also find the Doca do Cavacas Natural Pools and lidos. For those who love the outdoors, there are plenty of hiking trails to follow, with the Levada trails being the most popular. Levadas are irrigation channels, so you'll follow along these as you walk. The 4.3 km long Levada das 25 Fontes takes around three hours and Tripadvisor users claim it's a 'beautiful' walk with lots of waterfalls and stunning viewpoints. Some of these trails will cross through the Laurissilva Forest, an UNESCO heritage site, which is a subtropical rainforest that's about 20 million years old. For those seeking more of a thrill, you can take a cable car ride and there are two options – the botanical garden cable car and the Funchal to Monte ride. At the parish of Monte, those looking to get back down into the city quickly can take a toboggan ride in one of the Monte sledges, made from wicker and wood. The route spans around two kilometres and takes about 10 minutes to complete. Funchal is also home to beautiful gardens, including the aforementioned botanical garden and Monte Palace Tropical Garden home to thousands of exotic plants. Gastronomy is taken very seriously in Funchal, with around 1,000 restaurants in the capital, with 11 of these being in the Michelin guide and several having stars. The river runs from Spey Loch to the sea on the Moray Firth. According to The Insurance Emporium, the River Spey is an especially good spot to fish for salmon and trout. It is considered among the most important salmon rivers in the whole of the UK. Another river singled out by the experts for fishing is the River Dee. One of the the highest rivers in the UK, it runs from the Cairngorms down through 81 miles of Royal Deeside to the North Sea at Aberdeen. Like the River Spey, The Insurance Emporium stated that the River Dee is a top spot for salmon and trout. They also praised its clear and fast waters and abundance of shallow pools. Meanwhile, the first loch in Scotland named by the experts as among the best fishing locations in the country is Loch Awe. Situated in Argyll and Bute, it is the third-biggest freshwater loch in the country—covering a surface area of around 38.5 square kilometres. According to The Insurance Emporium, Loch Awe is a good place for salmon, pike, and brown trout. The ruined Kilchurn Castle also provides a picturesque backdrop as you wait for a bite. The second and final loch included in the list of the top Scottish fishing spots is Loch Lomond. It is the largest loch in Scotland by surface area, covering 71 square kilometres, and is among the most iconic in the country alongside Loch Ness. There is a wide selection of fish that the experts suggest fishing at Loch Lomond, including salmon, pike, sea trout, chub, perch, and dace. It is recommended that fishers journey out onto the water by boat for the best chance of landing a bite. Elsewhere, for those interested in some seaside fishing, The Insurance Emporium recommends Dunnet Head. The most northerly point on Great Britain, Dunnet Head is famous for its spectacular coastal views. The northern spot was named as a top destination for skate and halibut fishing. Meanwhile, the Dunnet Head Fishing Club is the northernmost fishing club on mainland Scotland. Finally, the last location in Scotland that was named among the best for fishing is Stonehaven. Stonehaven is a picturesque town situated along the northeast coast of Scotland, around 15 miles out of Aberdeen. According to the experts, Stonehaven is a great place for cod and sea bass. They also state that flounder and mackerel can be found in its waters.
