Fluminense advances at Club World Cup after scoreless draw with the Mamelodi Sundowns
MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Fluminense held the Mamelodi Sundowns to a scoreless draw on Wednesday, denying the South African club the win they needed to advance to the knockout round at the Club World Cup.
Fluminense finished second in Group F to Borussia Dortmund, which defeated Ulsan 1-0 in a simultaneous game in Cincinnati. Both Fluminense and Dortmund will await the results of other matches to learn their opponents in the round of 16.
The Sundowns needed a win to advance. They had never won a Club World Cup match before defeating Ulsan in their opener. They then put up a valiant fight in a 4-3 loss to Dortmund.
The Sundowns, the crowd favorite at Hard Rock Stadium, came out with energy, determined not to see their run in the tournament end. They dominated possession (68%) in the opening half and made three shots on goal.
Fluminense's best chance in the half came in the 40th minute on Nonato's attempt from the edge of the box.
Forty-year-old Thiago Silva was on the bench for Fluminense because of muscle soreness. Germán Cano started in his place.
Temperatures in Miami were in the balmy mid-80s, but cooler than in recent days.

Fluminense, which only needed the draw to advance, increased the pressure in the second half. Cano nearly scored in the 58th minute when he picked up a pass from Jhon Arias but his right-footed shot hit the right post.

Wednesday night at the Kaseya Center, Miami Heat fans spilled into the arena for the team's draft party. Amid pop-a-shot games and meet and greets, they were eager to see what magic the Miami front room would conjure after last season's lackluster performance, culminating in their 4-0 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the first round of the Eastern Conference Finals. And that magic came when the Miami Heat selected Kasparas Jakučionis. Now, fans are revved up and ready to go. Jakučionis — the freshman guard from the University of Illinois — was originally projected as a lottery pick, but fell to 20th on draft night when the Heat snagged him in its first-round selection. 'I'm feeling ecstatic because I didn't think Kasparas Jakučionis would be here,' said lifelong fan Kevin Cancelo. 'I think he could be a real difference-maker for the Heat. The playmaking ability that we don't have right now, I mean he's going to have an instant impact.' The Heat's 2024-25 season, and now offseason, has been anything but uneventful. First, there was the Jimmy Butler saga, which culminated in his early February trade to the Golden State Warriors after months of back-and-forth drama — and a very public breakup — between the six-time NBA All-Star and the Heat. 'The Jimmy Butler situation, to me, was handled the best way it could be handled, especially with a player of that caliber,' longtime fan Jonathan Montoya said. 'Everybody knows his attitude. We got what was good enough for us during that time.' Montoya said he has been a fan of the Heat since 2003, and he's hoping to see 'an upgrade' from the team this upcoming season. That upgrade could have come from the Heat's potential trade and acquisition of the 15-time NBA All-Star Kevin Durant, which Montoya said he thought would elevate the team and provide support to Heat leaders Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro. In the end, it wasn't convincing enough for the Phoenix Suns, who ended up trading Durant to the Houston Rockets. 'With Kevin Durant, I thought the front office could have pushed a little bit harder to get him, but you know, I'm happy we got to keep all the young assets and be able to keep the draft picks,' 14-year-old from Fort Lauderdale Brad Hochberg told the Miami Herald. Hochberg and his family have been season ticket holders since he was three years old. Now, things could be looking up for the Heat with their selection of Jakučionis. According to Jakučionis, who spoke to Miami media after his selection Wednesday night, he knows 'development is huge there [Miami], and I think I can pull a lot. Just help to make the team better, win as much as we can, and I'm ready to work.'

Monterrey advances to knockout rounds at the Club World Cup with 4-0 victory over Urawa
PASADENA, Calif. (AP) — Monterrey scored three goals in a 10-minute span of the first half and went on to defeat the Urawa Red Diamonds 4-0 on Wednesday night and advance to the knockout rounds in the Club World Cup. Monterrey finished second in Group E behind Inter Milan, which defeated River Plate 2-0 in a simultaneous game in Seattle. Monterry plays Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday at Atlanta in the round of 16. The match drew just 14,312 to the 89,702-capacity Rose Bowl. Nelson Deossa ripped the ball from 35 yards out that Urawa goalkeeper Shusaku Nishikawa got a hand on but couldn't stop in the 30th minute to put Monterrey up 1-0. After a cooling break, Germán Berterame tucked the ball into the bottom right corner of the net to make it 2-0. Yankees' Max Fried continues to make case to start the All-Star Game after reaching 10 wins
CINCINNATI (AP) — Aaron Boone still has a couple weeks before deciding who will be the American League's starting pitcher for the All-Star Game. It could end up being one of his own players. Max Fried became the first pitcher to reach 10 wins this season in the New York Yankees 7-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday night. 'It's down the road. We'll see. He's making the case though,' Boone said about Fried's chances to start the midsummer classic on July 15 in Atlanta. The left-hander allowed one unearned run and four hits while striking out seven to improve to 10-2. Fried is the third Yankees pitcher since 1962 to be the first in the majors to reach double-digit victories, joining CC Sabathia in 2011 and Tommy John in 1979. 'I guess it's cool but we're all here just trying to win games. A lot of it is credit to my teammates. It's nice, but that's more of a team stat than an individual one,' said Fried about reaching double digits in wins. Fried signed a $218 million, eight-year contract with the Yankees last December and has excelled in his first year in pinstripes. He quickly became the staff's ace after Gerrit Cole was lost for the season during spring training due to Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. Fried has four games this season where he has gone at least seven innings and not allowed an earned run, tied with Detroit's Tarik Skubal and San Diego's Nick Pivetta for most in the majors. He's second in the majors with a 1.92 ERA and 108 innings. 'Ever since (Cole) went down he's shown us why they paid him what they paid him and why he's the guy we thought he was going to be. 'I always give him his prop and his flowers, but now he can take them any time he wants.' The 1.92 ERA is the third-lowest by a Yankees' pitcher is his first 17 starts with the club since earned runs became an official stat in both leagues in 1913. Fried has allowed two or fewer earned runs in all but two starts. He has been even more dominant after Yankees' losses, going 8-1 with a 0.93 ERA in 10 starts. 'I mean 10 wins in half a season, it's not easy to do in any era, especially now. But that's just a testament to how good and efficient he's been,' Boone said. 'Whether it's coming off a loss or extending a streak, his consistency has been great. 'I told him again today 'just watching you more and more, I would not have wanted to hit off you.' He's got so many weapons out there and there's just so much movement to all his pitches, he's been terrific.' Fried getting the start in the All-Star Game would carry more importance after he played eight seasons in Atlanta before coming to New York. Fried though knows that decision remains a couple weeks away. 'I've got a handful of starts to go before the break. A lot can happen between now and then.
