The EC has also said it was making available printed copies, district wise, to representatives of political parties so that anomalies, if any, could be flagged during the 'claims and objections' phase, which would continue till September 1 before the 'final rolls' are published.
However, the main opposition party, the RJD, was unhappy with the system and in a memorandum, submitted to the Chief Electoral Officer of Bihar, it demanded an 'assembly segment-wise' break-up conveniently downloaded "in a pen drive or on a CD".

Rajya Sabha, Lok Sabha adjourned till tomorrow amid protests over SIR revision

New Delhi, Aug 7 (UNI) The monsoon session of Parliament today witnessed both Houses being adjourned for the day till tomorrow, August 8 amid continued protests by Opposition members on the contentious issue of Bihar's revision of electoral rolls. On Day 13, both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha resumed for its routine business at 11 am but were quickly disrupted and adjourned till 12 pm and 2 pm respectively amid noisy sloganeering by the Opposition. In Lok Sabha, the Manipur Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2025, was passed without discussion, despite loud protests by Opposition MPs demanding a debate on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. The Bill authorises payment and appropriation of certain sums from and out of the Consolidated Fund of the State of Manipur for the services of the financial year 2025-26. The Bill was passed without any discussion as opposition members did not relent. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman accused the Opposition of shedding 'crocodile tears' over Manipur, saying that 'while they talk of Manipur, they do not want money to go to the state, which is under President's rule.' Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha passed the Coastal Shipping Bill, 2025, after a brief debate amidst sloganeering by the Opposition MPs. Deputy Chairman Harivansh and Chair Ghanshyam Tiwari urged members to maintain order, but protests persisted throughout the day. Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge described the current political climate as a 'dangerous phase' and urged the government to permit a debate on the SIR exercise, assuring that the Opposition would act in the nation's interest. However, leader of the House and BJP president JP Nadda requested the chair to proceed with the Coastal Shipping Bill, 2025 bill as per the schedule. The Bill was moved by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal for its passage. The Bill was cleared by Lok Sabha in April. The Coastal Shipping Bill, 2025 seeks to consolidate laws related to ports, promote integrated port development, and facilitate ease of doing business along India's coastline. The legislation aims to ensure the optimal utilisation of the country's vast maritime resources. Government officials said the Bill proposes the establishment and empowerment of State Maritime Boards to manage ports other than major ports more effectively. It also provides for the creation of the Maritime State Development Council to foster structured growth and development in the port sector. The Bill includes provisions for the management of pollution, disaster response, emergencies, security, safety, navigation, and data at ports, thereby aiming to enhance regulatory oversight and operational efficiency. Tejashwi blames EC for dual EPIC card

Patna: As the Election Commission (EC) asked the leader of opposition in the Bihar assembly, Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, to respond to allegations that he holds two EPIC numbers, the RJD leader on Thursday hit out at the poll body, accusing it of attempting to pin on him a mistake committed by its own officials. Speaking to reporters in Patna before departing for New Delhi to attend a key INDIA bloc meeting, Tejashwi said, "Whose lapse is it if two EPIC numbers were issued to me?... Matlab galti khud karen aur explanation hamse mangege (They make the mistake themselves and are seeking an explanation from me)?" He added, "Achha jawab ham denge (I'll send a good reply)." He denied receiving any notice from the EC itself. "I haven't got any notice from the EC, although it has come from the electoral registration officer," he clarified. Dismissing the allegation, he questioned the EC's intent in attempting to hold him accountable for the duplication of EPIC. The former deputy CM issued his response a day after receiving a second notice from the authorities, instructing him to reply by Friday, Aug 8. The notice was served by the sub-divisional magistrate of Patna Sadar, who also acts as the electoral registration officer (ERO) for the Digha assembly constituency. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 20 Things You Should Stop Wearing After 40 Undo In the letter, the ERO reminded Tejashwi that he had earlier been asked to submit the details of his EPIC, along with the original copy, for a detailed investigation. However, the documents have not been provided yet. "So, you are again requested to provide all the details by Friday so that a detailed investigation could be conducted," the ERO said. The second notice followed Tejashwi's press conference on Aug 2, where he claimed his name had been omitted from the voter list. During the conference, he cited EPIC number RAB2916120 to support his assertion. Shortly thereafter, on Aug 3, the EC served its first notice. The Patna district administration also issued a rebuttal, releasing a screenshot of the draft electoral rolls showing the names and photographs of both Tejashwi and his father, RJD president Lalu Prasad, confirming their inclusion. US-India trade row: MEA official calls Donald Trump's tariff hike a ‘unilateral decision'; says both sides were ‘very close to a solution'

US President Donald Trump (AI image) A senior Indian diplomat on Thursday criticised the Donald Trump administration's imposition of 50 per cent tariffs on Indian exports to the US, calling the move 'unilateral' and lacking any 'logic or reason', even as he confirmed that bilateral trade negotiations between the two sides would continue. 'This is a unilateral decision. I don't think there is any logic or reason in the way it is done,' said Dammu Ravi, secretary (economic relations), ministry of external affairs, speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the LIDE Brazil India Forum in Rio de Janeiro, as quoted by news agency PTI. The remarks came hours after US President Donald Trump signed an executive order doubling import tariffs on Indian goods to 50 per cent, citing New Delhi's continued imports of discounted Russian oil as the reason. The move is expected to severely affect key sectors like textiles, marine products, leather, and chemicals. In its first official reaction, India called the move "unfair, unjustified and unreasonable", according to government sources. Despite the escalation, Ravi indicated that India would continue to engage diplomatically. "Perhaps, this is a phase we have to overcome. The negotiations are still going on. So, we are confident that solutions will be found in the course of time in looking at mutually beneficial partnerships," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Option Trading: Mr. Gopal Reveals His Powerful Laxman Rekha Strategy For Free TradeWise Learn More Undo According to Ravi, India's ministry of commerce is leading the discussions with the US, and talks had made significant headway before the tariff hike was announced. 'We were very close to finding a solution, and I think that momentum has taken a temporary pause, but it will continue,' he added. A US delegation is expected in India later this month for the sixth round of talks on a proposed bilateral trade agreement (BTA). The two countries are hoping to conclude the first phase of the BTA by October–November. Downplaying the long-term impact of the tariffs, Ravi said Indian industry was resilient and would not be derailed by the new duties. 'The high tariff will not have any detrimental impact on the Indian industry. It will not pull back or derail India Inc,' he asserted. Ravi noted that countries often look for alternative markets when faced with tariff 'walls', and said India would now turn its attention to geographies such as the Middle East, Latin America, Africa and South Asia. 'If the US becomes difficult to export to, you will automatically look at other opportunities,' he said. Describing Trump's move as a "temporary aberration", Ravi expressed optimism that the situation would stabilise with time and dialogue. 'This is, in my view, a temporary aberration, a temporary problem that the country will face. In the course of time, we are confident that the world will find solutions to it. Like-minded countries will look for cooperation and economic engagement that will be mutually beneficial for all sides,' he said. Ravi also addressed concerns about the growing global momentum toward de-dollarisation. Though he denied any deliberate move to bypass the US dollar, he said many countries were now seeking alternatives for bilateral trade due to a shortage of hard currency post-Covid. 'Work on this aspect is on bilaterally and at the Brics level,' he noted. Trump's executive order, 'Addressing Threats to the US by the Government of the Russian Federation', imposes an additional 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods over and above the existing 25 per cent levy. The first layer of duties takes effect from August 7, with the additional 25 per cent kicking in from August 27. India currently imports around 88 per cent of its crude oil needs, and Russian oil, available at a discount after the Ukraine war, has become the country's largest source. As of July, 1.6 million barrels per day of India's 5 million bpd crude imports came from Russia. The new US duty would make India the highest-taxed exporter to the US (at 50 per cent), alongside Brazil. In comparison, tariffs on similar goods from competitors like Bangladesh (35 per cent), Vietnam (20 per cent), and China (30 per cent) remain significantly lower. Trade experts believe the tariff hike is a pressure tactic by the US ahead of the ongoing BTA negotiations. Washington is seeking duty concessions on electric vehicles, dairy, wines, petrochemical products, apples, tree nuts, genetically-modified crops, and more. In 2024–25, bilateral trade between India and the US stood at $131.8 billion, with Indian exports accounting for $86.5 billion. Despite the tensions, Ravi emphasised the strategic nature of the India-US partnership. 'We have a complementary relationship. Businesses and leaders on both sides are looking at trade opportunities,' he said. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays .
