Rajya Sabha, Lok Sabha adjourned till tomorrow amid protests over SIR revision

New Delhi, Aug 7 (UNI) The monsoon session of Parliament today witnessed both Houses being adjourned for the day till tomorrow, August 8 amid continued protests by Opposition members on the contentious issue of Bihar's revision of electoral rolls.
On Day 13, both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha resumed for its routine business at 11 am but were quickly disrupted and adjourned till 12 pm and 2 pm respectively amid noisy sloganeering by the Opposition.
In Lok Sabha, the Manipur Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2025, was passed without discussion, despite loud protests by Opposition MPs demanding a debate on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. The Bill authorises payment and appropriation of certain sums from and out of the Consolidated Fund of the State of Manipur for the services of the financial year 2025-26.
The Bill was passed without any discussion as opposition members did not relent.
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman accused the Opposition of shedding 'crocodile tears' over Manipur, saying that 'while they talk of Manipur, they do not want money to go to the state, which is under President's rule.'
Meanwhile, Rajya Sabha passed the Coastal Shipping Bill, 2025, after a brief debate amidst sloganeering by the Opposition MPs. Deputy Chairman Harivansh and Chair Ghanshyam Tiwari urged members to maintain order, but protests persisted throughout the day.
Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge described the current political climate as a 'dangerous phase' and urged the government to permit a debate on the SIR exercise, assuring that the Opposition would act in the nation's interest.
However, leader of the House and BJP president JP Nadda requested the chair to proceed with the Coastal Shipping Bill, 2025 bill as per the schedule. The Bill was moved by Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal for its passage. The Bill was cleared by Lok Sabha in April.
The Coastal Shipping Bill, 2025 seeks to consolidate laws related to ports, promote integrated port development, and facilitate ease of doing business along India's coastline. The legislation aims to ensure the optimal utilisation of the country's vast maritime resources.
Government officials said the Bill proposes the establishment and empowerment of State Maritime Boards to manage ports other than major ports more effectively. It also provides for the creation of the Maritime State Development Council to foster structured growth and development in the port sector.
The Bill includes provisions for the management of pollution, disaster response, emergencies, security, safety, navigation, and data at ports, thereby aiming to enhance regulatory oversight and operational efficiency.

Tejashwi Yadav Slams Amit Shahs Speeches In Bihar, Calls It ‘Pakau-Thaku'

Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader and former Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav on Saturday took a jibe at Union Home Minister Amit Shah, accusing him of delivering 'repetitive' and 'unproductive' speeches during his visits to Bihar, referring to it as "pakau-thaku". Speaking to the media, Yadav accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of practising "politics of negativity" and ignoring pressing issues such as education, healthcare, poverty, and large-scale migration from Bihar. "Amit Shah speaks the same 'pakau-thaku' things whenever he visits. He should speak about the development of Bihar, about ending unemployment and inflation. He doesn't speak about any of these. Bihar will not benefit if they keep abusing Lalu Yadav and Tejashwi Yadav. Unless unemployment, poverty and migration end in Bihar, they do not speak about education and health facilities. Their is only the politics of negativity. Let them do it, this doesn't matter...," Yadav said. Amit Shah reached Bihar's Sitamarhi on Friday and laid the foundation stone for the redevelopment of Janki Mata Temple at Punaura Dham. Later, addressing a public rally, Shah lashed out at the Opposition over their criticism of the government's handling of Operation Sindoor, accusing the Congress party and Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad Yadav's camp of "opposing" the anti-terror operation. Shah also hit out at the Opposition parties for opposing the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list in Bihar, accusing them of indulging in vote bank politics. He alleged that the opposition parties were opposing the SIR because infiltrators form part of their vote bank. The Union Minister further asserted that this exercise is not happening for the first time, and former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru started it. On being asked about Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's meetings with Anant Singh and gangster-turned-politician Anand Mohan, Tejashwi Yadav chose a guarded response. "I do not want to comment on understand only the language of the AK-47. The Government seizes AK-47 from their house, and the same Government releases them. People of Bihar know very well who they are. Party spokespersons are there to speak on their behalf. It does not suit us to speak on them...," he said.

PM to open Yellow Line of Namma Metro today

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Bengaluru on Sunday to inaugurate the much-delayed Yellow Line of Namma Metro between R.V. Road Metro Station and Bommasandra Metro Station, apart from laying the foundation stone for Metro Phase III in the city. He will also flag off a Vande Bharat train between Bengaluru and Belagavi. The Prime Minister's visit comes two days after the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi led a 'Vote Adhikar Rally' in Bengaluru, alleging widespread 'voter fraud' during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. On the eve of the Prime Minister's visit to the city, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday said the State's Law Department would hold an inquiry into the alleged 'voter fraud'. While the Bharatiya Janata Party, both at the Centre and in the State, has been countering these allegations, the Prime Minister is yet to respond on the issue. He will address a public function on the International Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore campus, Electronics City, on Sunday, where he will lay the foundation stone for Metro Phase III. Sources in the BJP said he may respond to the Congress' allegations during the speech. This visit comes at a time when the political scene in the State is hotting up and a nine-day Monsoon Session of the State legislature is set to commence from Monday. Mr. Modi's visit is expected to further add to the political heat. Meanwhile, both the Congress and BJP have been trying to take credit over Namma Metro in the city.
