Inquest launched after three fishermen drown off Shelley Point

POLICE have launched an inquest after three fishermen tragically drowned when their boat capsized off Shelley Point near St Helena Bay.
Police spokesperson Wesley Twigg said NSRI and private divers retrieved the bodies three men from the water and were declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel on Friday.
"The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation,' said Twigg.
Cedric Brown, NSRI Mykonos duty coxswain station said NSRI Mykonos and NSRI St Helena Bay duty crew were activated following eyewitness reports of at least one man clinging onto a capsized boat offshore of Shelly Point, West Coast, and where there was suspected to be people in the water at the capsized boat.
He said the NSRI rescue craft, Rotary Onwards, was launched from the St Helena Bay base as the South African Police Services, Saldanha Bay Traffic Services, West Coast Disaster Risk Management, and local medical services rushed to the scene.
On arrival the body of a man was located washed ashore, before he was taken into the care of the police and paramedics.

'During a search, the body of a second man was located in shallow surf near the shoreline, and he was recovered to the shoreline by NSRI rescue swimmers in cooperation with the police,' said Brown.
The NSRI said they eventually determined three local fishermen, believed to be adult males aboard a fishing boat that had capsized.
'An NSRI rescue swimmer was deployed from the NSRI rescue craft and assisted the Good Samaritan searching in the surf zone along the rocky shoreline, where the body of the third fisherman was located and recovered onto the NSRI rescue craft. The body of the man was brought to the shoreline and taken into the care of the police and paramedics. Sadly, the man was declared deceased by paramedics. The bodies of the three deceased men were taken into the care of the Police and the Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.'

Missing 6-year-old child found drowned in pool in Durban
Paramedics were informed that the missing child in the Umbilo area of Durban. A 6-year-old child who was reported missing has tragically been found drowned in a pool at a home in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN). ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson said they were informed of the missing child in the Umbilo area of Durban on Monday evening, around 6pm. Call out 'Paramedics were placed on standby. Violence erupts in Cape Town: Six fatalities in 24 hours

Image: File Six people were killed in separate shooting incidents in less than 24 hours in Cape Town over the weekend. The incidents took place in Steenberg, Muizenberg, and Bonteheuwel. Western Cape police spokesperson, Sergeant Wesley Twigg, confirmed no arrests have been made in any of the shooting incidents. INCIDENT 1 On Saturday, August 16, at 5.40 pm, Bishop Lavis police responded to a shooting incident where a 27-year-old woman was shot and killed in Jakkalsvlei Avenue near a local supermarket in Bonteheuwel. "According to reports, the victim was walking in the road when a male walked up to her and shot her. The victim sustained a gunshot wound to the back of her head and was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel. The motive for the attack forms part of the police investigation. The suspect fled the scene and is yet to be arrested,' Twigg said. In Muizenberg policing precinct, the bodies of three people were discovered in Mike Place, Xakabantu. INCIDENT 3 On Sunday morning, August 17, just after midnight, Steenberg police responded to a murder. 'Police responded to Choir Street at about 12.08 am, where a 27-year-old man was shot and fatally wounded. According to reports, the victim was riding his bicycle when occupants of a Toyota Quantum opened fire on the victim. The victim sustained gunshot wounds to his body and was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel,' Twigg said. The motive for the attack is believed to be gang-related. A case of murder is being investigated. INCIDENT 4 Minutes later, officers were called to Flute Street for another shooting. 'At about 12.15 am, a 22-year-old man was shot and fatally wounded. A 12-year-old boy was also wounded. Steenberg police attended to the crime scene, where they found the victims with gunshot wounds to their bodies. The 22-year-old victim was declared deceased on the scene by medical personnel, while the 12-year-old victim was taken to a medical facility for medical treatment. The motive for the attack is gang-related,' Twigg said. A case of murder and attempted murder is being investigated.
