For students such as M Mathisha, the opportunity to train on the turf means year-round access to the sport they love, regardless of weather. "Earlier we used to play on a muddy ground. When it rained, we would forego practice," says Mathisha, who began playing football in Class VII. "Now we train all the time. Since I play for zonal and district matches, this turf has helped me work on my form better, and my stamina is preserved better.
"
K Yoshini, whose seniors inspired her to take up the sport last year, says she dreams of becoming a lawyer. "I come from a family of modest means. My mother is a housewife, and my father is a tailor. With regular training, I hope to secure college admission through the sports quota," she says.
The school's physical education teacher, P Sivanesan, who has been training students since 2018, says the turf has transformed their interest in sports.
"If I give them a drill, they are pushing their limits and going well and beyond what I ask them to do," he says.
Training begins at 6am and ends at 8:30am, and again from 4:30pm to 5:30pm. This turf has drawn the attention of other students also. "We may see an increase in participation," says Sivanesan.
Currently, more than 70 students are actively training on the turf, 40 girls and 30 boys, and it's indicative of how inclusive and aspirational the programme has become.

S Kannappan, director of Tamil Nadu school education department, says, "We shall work with GCC and roll this out in other govt schools. The department's goal is to encourage sports in schools."
Beyond football, several govt schools in Chennai are also promoting sports such as fencing, weightlifting, boxing, and basketball. With Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) regularly scouting for talent, it has found some of the best fencers in govt schools across the district.
As a part of the CM Trophy, a state-level sports competition organised by govt, school students can participate and apply to avail training and support free of cost.
"Sports should not be a privilege, it should be accessible to every child, regardless of where they study or what their background is. We're working to ensure that more students, especially those from underprivileged backgrounds, are provided with basic infrastructure, coaching support and adequate nutrition so that every student has an opportunity to discover their potential through sport," says J Meghanatha Reddy, member secretary of SDAT.

GCC gyms, no-go for fitness-minded

Chennai: Those depending on gymnasiums run by Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) for their fitness needs have hit a roadblock, as many of them are either locked, broken down, or being misused. For many young people, and even athletes like T Shankar, a district-level football player from Kodambakkam, a private gym membership is far too costly. "A mid-level private gym costs at least 3,000 to 5,000 for three months. My father works as an MTC driver and he is the only earning member. We can't afford a private gym with membership and personal trainer fees," he said. But GCC gym in Trustpuram has been lying shut for more than two years. "The 4,000-odd families here have asked for maintenance of the facility. The Corporation shouldn't start something and then forget about it," said V Harish, a resident. Across areas such as Saidapet, Mylapore Kabali Thottam, Nakkeran Nagar, and Thousand Lights, GCC-run gyms are in a dire state. The city has 216 such facilities across its 15 zones, including standalone units, playground gyms, and women-only EmpoHER centres. Although they are supposed to remain open from 5am to 9am and 5pm to 9.30pm, most of these gyms are locked for most of the day and opened only late in the evening. Even gyms that remain open are poorly maintained, with broken dumbbells, rusted barbells, torn seats, and manual equipment instead of modern hydraulic machines. There is no potable water, clean toilets, or changing rooms. "Most of the equipment a gym needs, three dumbbell sets up to 100 kg, two treadmills, a Smith machine, cable flyes, and a bench press, can be bought and installed within 5–6 lakh. Hydraulic equipment must be serviced once in six months," said K Vinoth Bhaskar, two-time Mr Tamil Nadu and owner of Spot Gym in Kodambakkam. Students to get textbooks for physical education

Chennai: From warm-ups to winning medals, Physical Education (PE) in Tamil Nadu schools is getting a major upgrade. For the first time, students of Classes 6 to 10 in govt and aided schools will now have exclusive guide books for PE - making the subject as structured and serious as maths or science. Released by the school education department, the new physical education guidebooks feature colourful and clear, step-by-step illustrations to help students easily understand exercises, games, and safety techniques. From yoga postures and warm-ups to Tamil heritage games and first aid, each activity is visually explained to support correct form and better engagement. Additionally, it encourages collaboration with special educators to teach children with special needs. According to officials from department, the larger goal is to help students from all walks of life excel in state, national, and international sports competitions, win medals and enhance mental well being. This structured guidebook brings clarity and consistency to how the subject is taught. "For students, it helps develop fitness, coordination, and lifelong healthy habits through age-appropriate, engaging activities. For teachers, it clearly lays down ready-to-use lesson plans, assessment tools, and activity ideas that make planning easier and ensure consistent quality across classes," T Chandramohan, school education secretary, said. You Can Also Check: Chennai AQI | Weather in Chennai | Bank Holidays in Chennai | Public Holidays in Chennai He further said the sessions outlined in the book also teach important life skills such as teamwork, discipline, and leadership. "Ultimately, they make PE a more meaningful and structured part of every student's school experience," he added. The demand for dedicated textbooks has been longstanding. "As of today, written PE exams are held for students of Classes 6-9 where questions such as the size of a football ground are asked. We have been demanding the department for a dedicated syllabus for PE and textbooks. I am glad this has been fulfilled," said Mohan, PE teacher, Govt Higher Secondary School, Kovalam. However, a few associations representing PE teachers argue that the govt must focus on improving the sports infrastructure in the state and filling vacancies before introducing dedicated textbooks. "Ideally, a school is supposed to have two PE teachers — one for students of Classes I-VIII and another for IX-XII. However, in most schools, not even one teacher is posted. Moreover, infrastructure for certain sports, such as pole vaulting, is poor. The govt should focus on building infrastructure to attract students to various types of sports as opposed to conventional ones," said S Pushparajan, deputy coordinator, Tamil Nadu physical education teachers association. "There are at least 3,000 vacant PE teacher posts across the state. Not just that, if the higher secondary student strength is over 400, a post of a physical director has to be created. However, the govt has not done this in a majority of schools citing fund shortage. When you don't have PE teachers in schools, what good would a textbook do?" asked S Arockiaraj, TN PE Teachers Physical Education Instructors Association's Chennai secretary.
