Iconic North Carolina tourist attraction damaged by Helene will be demolished

Nearly a year after Hurricane Helene's devastating pathway through western North Carolina, a vibrant tourist attraction offering visitors a serene escape in the Blue Ridge Mountains is being torn down.
Like many other beloved sites in the region, the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge in Rutherford County crumpled from the relentless floods and winds from remnants of Helene last September. Now, the town of Lake Lure said Thursday that it will start its demolition of the historic structure later this month.
While the three-arched bridge dates back to 1925, it didn't become the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge until almost a century later. Once the bridge was decommissioned, a group of local volunteers, Friends of the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge, worked to enhance it by adding its iconic gardens in 2013, according to the group's website. The bridge attracted more than 150,000 visitors annually, said Linda Reandeau, a master gardener and the group's marketing chair.
But then Helene brought destruction to western North Carolina last year, with the Lake Lure area — which served as a backdrop for a few scenes in 'Dirty Dancing' — sustaining some of the worst damage. The town of Lake Lure and Chimney Rock Village, as well as the lake itself, were covered in a layer of disfigured debris. The area still hasn't recovered, but tourist attractions such as Chimney Rock State Park have reopened.
In the Flowering Bridge's case, one end of the structure completely collapsed. Several other points also buckled from the damage, and its lush greenery was swept away in the storm. Over the past 11 months, the bridge has only continued to deteriorate, Reandeau said.
'It would have been 100 years old this year,' she said. 'To see it destroyed as it was in the storm was very emotional and heartbreaking for me, along with all the other volunteers and so many people who have visited.'
The decision to demolish the bridge came after two engineering firms concluded that it couldn't be restored, according to the town's website. Demolition is expected to start on Aug. 18.
While the bridge will no longer remain, Reandeau said the landmark's volunteer group is in the planning process for how to move forward. The nonprofit is waiting for occupancy certification to reopen its relatively unscathed education center, where it can hold gardening and art classes — and hopefully install new gardens nearby, Reandeau said.
'We haven't gone away, we're still here, and we really look forward to the day we can welcome back visitors to the gardens,' she said. 'We fully intend to make another magical space. It's just not going to happen immediately.'

Browns: The origin of Tony Brown's bamboo scepter

Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders made quite the impression last week in the team's opening exhibition game against the Carolina Panthers. And we're not just talking about what he did on the field! Sanders created a buzz on social media with a video of his entrance into Bank of America Stadium, which was filmed by his social media team. It wasn't just Sanders that caught everyone's eye, however, as cornerback Tony Brown was right there carrying a bamboo scepter. Brown shared the meaning of the scepter during an appearance on NFL Network on Wednesday, explaining that it began with a trip to Ghana with linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah for JOK's annual football camp: 'We traveled through Ghana, visited the king in the western region, and visited the Cape Coast, a very historically relevant dungeon as it relates to the transatlantic slave trade. So, as I'm going through the tour learning about how the slaves were held, he explained to me how you can try to calm your emotions by speaking with the ancestors as we walk through this dungeon. 'So during the last part of the tour, I asked the ancestors to grant me the wisdom, guidance, and strength that I can use to make you proud. As we left the dungeon castle, it is along the shores of the Cape Coast, I walked into the water to clear my mind. This staff washed ashore at my feet, and I picked it up and thought it was pretty cool. Jeremiah was about 10-15 feet behind me, and when I turned around, they looked at me in awe. The Ghana chiefs we traveled with imparted their wisdom on what it means and explained the meaning behind obtaining this in the way I did. 'I carry this with pride and honor as it connects me to something greater than myself. I want people to rise with me, and I will continue to empower others with my word and help people shine by being my authentic self.' Brown went into greater detail about his experiences in Ghana in a guest blog post at Matt Lombardo's site — check it out here. Brown is in his second season with Cleveland, having signed as a free agent in 2024. He played in six games with the Browns last season, all on special teams, before being placed on injured reserve in late October after suffering a foot injury.

‘Real Housewives' star Dr. Terry Dubrow warns stars against career-ruining procedures: ‘Trying to pursue perfection'

Dr. Terry Dubrow, a plastic surgeon known for his work on shows like 'Botched' and 'Botched Presents: Plastic Surgery Rewind,' as well as for appearing on 'Real Housewives of Orange County' with wife Heather Dubrow, isn't holding back his thoughts about the latest trends in his field. A big issue, he tells Fox News Digital, is that stars and regular people alike are taking plastic surgery too far in an attempt to 'pursue perfection' – and it's getting to the point where he says 'aging is becoming a disease.' 'Some people do have a certain amount of BDD, body dysmorphic disorder,' he explained. 'And I think there's a spectrum of it, and some people, not necessarily celebrities, but some people just may do plastic surgery for not the greatest reasons, and they're trying to pursue perfection.' Another reason why people might overdo cosmetic surgery, Dubrow theorized, is because of social media. 'Everybody is portraying, as you know, through filtering and other processes – now AI, of course, is going to be influencing that – idealized versions of themselves. And celebrities are now transparent, admitting to plastic surgery, and are looking really good. So aging is becoming a disease.' 5 Dr. Terry Dubrow warned against celebrities going too far with plastic surgery. Paige Kahn for Decider From his perspective, it's more acceptable in Hollywood for a female celebrity to have noticeable work done than men, but for both, he stressed the importance of not changing one's appearance too drastically. 'If you're a female celebrity who's gotten older, it's OK to look a little different, just as long as you don't do the sort of… Jennifer Grey thing, where you go from looking one way on 'Dirty Dancing,' having your nose done, and then you're out of the industry because you changed your whole look,' he said. Grey famously had work done following her success in 1987's 'Dirty Dancing' – as she wrote in her memoir, 'Out of the Corner,' the nose job made her literally unrecognizable to some. As she explained it, 'Overnight I lose my identity and my career.' 5 Dubrow said actress Jennifer Grey lost work because of her nose job. CBS via Getty Images; FilmMagic There are a few examples of other celebrities he suspects may have gotten work done that went about it in a better way, one being Brad Pitt. 'Brad Pitt looks unbelievable,' he said. 'What I love about the way Brad Pitt looks, and I have no inside information about Brad Pitt, is he looks like Brad Pitt. He looks unaltered … If you did anything to alter Brad Pitt's Brad Pitt-ness, even if he looked good, it would be a fail. Because what are you going to do to make Brad Pitt look better?' Pitt has never admitted to any plastic surgery, though in 2022 he spoke about his youthful appearance to NDTV, saying, 'I could say I eat well, but I don't. I could say I meditate, but not really. I would say I've got a lot of lovely people in my life and I stay creative.' 5 Dubrow said he suspects Brad Pitt got work done at some point. Getty Images; Variety via Getty Images Another example of a celebrity who Terry thinks has had good work done is Lindsay Lohan, who he said 'looks really, really good.' 'Whatever she's done was done really well,' he shared. 'I think whatever she's does, it's worked.' The 39-year-old actress hasn't admitted to plastic surgery despite rumors to the contrary, but earlier this year, she told Elle, 'Everyone does Botox.' She's also been open about other non-invasive procedures she's had, like Morpheus8, a microneedling treatment, and she's praised the work of her dermatologist. 5 Dubrow praised the plastic surgery Lindsay Lohan had done. FilmMagic; Getty Images The plastic surgeon also lauded the looks of some of Hollywood's biggest leading men: George Clooney, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, who he believes all look amazing. 'I don't know what they're doing, but it's working, OK?' he said. 'They look the same. They don't look altered. You know they're doing something there. They're not letting themselves go … It's not just diet and exercise, they're doing whatever they're doing, it's working – they look age-appropriate but wonderful, like Brad Pitt.' On a more personal note, Heather Dubrow admitted, 'I'm as vain as the next person. Being on high definition television at this age is not for the faint of heart.' 5 Heather Dubrow said she prioritizes 'being strong' over her looks. Fox News She said that she's 'always opted for the non-surgical solutions to anti-aging,' and that for her, the most important thing right now is 'being strong' rather than her looks. 'I want to be like a fit mom, meaning I want to have longevity,' she said. 'I remember seeing a picture of Goldie Hawn a few years ago, and she had her granddaughter in a backpack. She was in her 70s, and I was like, 'That's what I want.' I'm not looking at pictures of the girls on the beach in the bikini going, 'Ooh, that's a nice butt.' I'm going, 'Look at her with her granddaughter on her back, and she is fit, and she's moving, and she's flexible, and she's alive.' That's what I think about.'

Watch: N.C. woman recaptures world record for Coca-Cola collection

Aug. 13 (UPI) -- A soft drink superfan from North Carolina recaptured a Guinness World Records title when her collection of Coca-Cola memorabilia was tallied at 5,623 unique items. Lenoir resident Debbie Indicott was first awarded the Guinness World Records title in 2020, when her collection was tallied at 2,028 items, and by 2023 her record had increased to 5,070 items. She lost the title later in 2023 to fellow collector Jeffery S. Fouke Jr., who had amassed 5,237 items. Indicott has now recaptured the title with 5,623 items. She said her collection was initially a source of friction in her family. "My husband's father worked for Pepsi for many, many years. So, in the beginning it was kind of a no-no to have Coke and definitely to have it in his household," she told WSB-TV in 2021. "But as my collection grew and grew he finally came to accept it and appreciate it, and he enjoys looking at everything too." Indicott said her love of Coke started with a simple color. "The red is, I think, what pulls me in, there's something about that bright red. Whenever I'm looking in antique stores, anything red draws my attention," she said. Solve the daily Crossword
