Iconic North Carolina tourist attraction damaged by Helene will be demolished
Like many other beloved sites in the region, the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge in Rutherford County crumpled from the relentless floods and winds from remnants of Helene last September. Now, the town of Lake Lure said Thursday that it will start its demolition of the historic structure later this month.
While the three-arched bridge dates back to 1925, it didn't become the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge until almost a century later. Once the bridge was decommissioned, a group of local volunteers, Friends of the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge, worked to enhance it by adding its iconic gardens in 2013, according to the group's website. The bridge attracted more than 150,000 visitors annually, said Linda Reandeau, a master gardener and the group's marketing chair.
But then Helene brought destruction to western North Carolina last year, with the Lake Lure area — which served as a backdrop for a few scenes in 'Dirty Dancing' — sustaining some of the worst damage. The town of Lake Lure and Chimney Rock Village, as well as the lake itself, were covered in a layer of disfigured debris. The area still hasn't recovered, but tourist attractions such as Chimney Rock State Park have reopened.
In the Flowering Bridge's case, one end of the structure completely collapsed. Several other points also buckled from the damage, and its lush greenery was swept away in the storm. Over the past 11 months, the bridge has only continued to deteriorate, Reandeau said.
'It would have been 100 years old this year,' she said. 'To see it destroyed as it was in the storm was very emotional and heartbreaking for me, along with all the other volunteers and so many people who have visited.'
The decision to demolish the bridge came after two engineering firms concluded that it couldn't be restored, according to the town's website. Demolition is expected to start on Aug. 18.
While the bridge will no longer remain, Reandeau said the landmark's volunteer group is in the planning process for how to move forward. The nonprofit is waiting for occupancy certification to reopen its relatively unscathed education center, where it can hold gardening and art classes — and hopefully install new gardens nearby, Reandeau said.
'We haven't gone away, we're still here, and we really look forward to the day we can welcome back visitors to the gardens,' she said. 'We fully intend to make another magical space. It's just not going to happen immediately.'

This staff washed ashore at my feet, and I picked it up and thought it was pretty cool. Jeremiah was about 10-15 feet behind me, and when I turned around, they looked at me in awe. The Ghana chiefs we traveled with imparted their wisdom on what it means and explained the meaning behind obtaining this in the way I did. 'I carry this with pride and honor as it connects me to something greater than myself. I want people to rise with me, and I will continue to empower others with my word and help people shine by being my authentic self.' Dr. Terry Dubrow, a plastic surgeon known for his work on shows like 'Botched' and 'Botched Presents: Plastic Surgery Rewind,' as well as for appearing on 'Real Housewives of Orange County' with wife Heather Dubrow, isn't holding back his thoughts about the latest trends in his field. A big issue, he tells Fox News Digital, is that stars and regular people alike are taking plastic surgery too far in an attempt to 'pursue perfection' – and it's getting to the point where he says 'aging is becoming a disease.' 'Some people do have a certain amount of BDD, body dysmorphic disorder,' he explained. 'And I think there's a spectrum of it, and some people, not necessarily celebrities, but some people just may do plastic surgery for not the greatest reasons, and they're trying to pursue perfection.' Another reason why people might overdo cosmetic surgery, Dubrow theorized, is because of social media. 'Everybody is portraying, as you know, through filtering and other processes – now AI, of course, is going to be influencing that – idealized versions of themselves. And celebrities are now transparent, admitting to plastic surgery, and are looking really good. 'If you're a female celebrity who's gotten older, it's OK to look a little different, just as long as you don't do the sort of… Jennifer Grey thing, where you go from looking one way on 'Dirty Dancing,' having your nose done, and then you're out of the industry because you changed your whole look,' he said. Watch: N.C. woman recaptures world record for Coca-Cola collection
Aug. 13 (UPI) -- A soft drink superfan from North Carolina recaptured a Guinness World Records title when her collection of Coca-Cola memorabilia was tallied at 5,623 unique items. Lenoir resident Debbie Indicott was first awarded the Guinness World Records title in 2020, when her collection was tallied at 2,028 items, and by 2023 her record had increased to 5,070 items. She lost the title later in 2023 to fellow collector Jeffery S. Fouke Jr., who had amassed 5,237 items. Indicott has now recaptured the title with 5,623 items. She said her collection was initially a source of friction in her family. "My husband's father worked for Pepsi for many, many years. So, in the beginning it was kind of a no-no to have Coke and definitely to have it in his household," she told WSB-TV in 2021. "But as my collection grew and grew he finally came to accept it and appreciate it, and he enjoys looking at everything too." Indicott said her love of Coke started with a simple color.
