Shubman Gill said winning England series is bigger than IPL. "IPL comes every year and you get to have a crack at it every year. In my opinion, winning a Test Series in England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa (collectively SENA countries) is bigger," Gill said in the pre-match press conference. Nasser Hussain picks Virat Kohli moment that has stuck with him most

Leeds [UK], June 20 (ANI): Former captain Nasser Hussain handpicked Virat Kohli's speech that he gave to his players in a hurdle during the final day at Lord's as the moment between India and England Test rivalry that has stuck with him. The moment that Hussain is referring to is India's tour of England in 2021. It was the final day of the second Test at the 'Home of Cricket', Lord's, and England was in pursuit of a 272-run target with 60 overs left. During the hurdle, Virat delivered a passionate speech, and his famous words still live rent-free in the hearts of cricket fans: "For 60 overs, they should feel hell." India pacers Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, and Ishant Sharma breathed fire and left England batters bamboozled to wrap up the game in the final hour of the Test with a 151-run triumph. "I was asked about my favourite India-England moment, historically. There have been so many. It may have not been my favourite, but it is the one that stuck with me the most. In the hurdle that last morning at Lord's when England were trying to chase the score, he was in the hurdle pointing at every Indian player telling them to unleash hell on that England batting lineup for 60 overs," Hussain said on Sky Sports. "That is what his side did. That side became the mirror image of Virat's character. Test match cricket is so much better when Kohli was playing. We will move on. We moved from Gavaskar to Tendulkar to Kohli and maybe to Gill. But Kohli added so much to this game," he added. Virat penned a heartfelt note on social media and pulled the curtain down on his 14-year-long Test career last month. As a result, he missed India's ongoing tour of England. After his decision, he returned to on-field action for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He steered Bengaluru to their maiden IPL title, and after the famous triumph, he emphasised the importance of the Test format and said, "So I would just urge the youngsters coming through to treat that format with respect. Because if you perform in Test cricket, you walk around anywhere in the world, people look you in the eye and shake your hand and say, well done, you played the game really well. So if you want to earn respect in World cricket all over, take up Test cricket, give your heart and soul to it." Nasser reflected on Virat's statement and said, "I mean, it was great to see what he said when he won the IPL about Test cricket. What he told the next generation that is the way you make your name in Test match cricket." (ANI)

ENG vs IND: Abhimanyu Easwaran overlooked, fans blame IPL favouritism

Abhimanyu Easwaran's wait for a Test debut continues, as he was once again left out of India's playing XI for the opening Test against England at Headingley, Leeds, on Friday, June 20. Instead, the Indian team management opted to hand a debut to Sai Sudharsan, who was slotted in at the No. 3 position as India kicked off a new era under captain Shubman Gill. Easwaran, 29, has been a consistent performer in the domestic circuit and was first included in the Indian squad during the 2022 tour of Bangladesh. However, despite being part of the squad multiple times since, he is yet to break into the playing 11. Easwaran performing well in domestic cricket The Bengal batter was in red-hot form last season, scoring heavily in tournaments like the Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy, and Irani Cup. His notable knocks included 127*, 191, 116, 157*, 200*, among others. In 103 first-class matches, Easwaran has amassed 7,841 runs at an impressive average of 48.70, including 27 centuries and 31 half-centuries. Fans sensing IPL favouritism Despite his consistent performances, the selectors chose to back 23-year-old Sai Sudharsan, who has played 29 first-class games, scoring 1,957 runs at an average of 39.93 with seven hundreds and five fifties. Sudharsan also had an outstanding run in IPL 2025, where he claimed the Orange Cap with 759 runs in 15 innings. While Sudharsan's current form may have influenced the decision, the move drew mixed reactions from fans online, many of whom voiced their disappointment over Easwaran's continued exclusion. All eyes will now be on Sudharsan to see if he can capitalise on this opportunity and make a strong impression in his debut Test.

India vs England 2025 1st Test: Yograj Singh makes MASSIVE statement about Shubman Gill on captaincy debut, he says…

Shubman Gill (right) and Yograj Singh. (Source: X) Shubman Gill kicked off a fresh start for Team India in Test cricket, taking over the reigns from Rohit Sharma officially on Friday as the first match of the five-Test series against England got underway at Headingley in Leeds. Gill has now become fifth-youngest cricketer to lead India in Test cricket after Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi, Sachin Tendulkar, Kapil Dev and Ravi Shastri at 25 years and 285 days. Former India cricketer Yograj Singh, father of Indian southpaw Yuvraj Singh, is someone who has kept a close eye on Shubman Gill along with his son. Yuvraj has been like a mentor to Gill since both of them were playing for Punjab Ranji Trophy team. Yograj Singh believes Gill needs to lead from the front and take the team forward along with him, much like Kapil Dev did in the 1983 World Cup. Gill has massive shoes to fill as he steps into the No. 4 position which has been left vacant by Virat Kohli after his retirement from Test cricket last month. Not only Kohli, Indian Test skipper Rohit Sharma also called time on Test career last month. With Jasprit Bumrah not keen on taking over as Indian captain and Rishabh Pant's inconsistent form, the Indian selectors didn't have any other choice apart from Shubman Gill. The first statement of intent comes from #YashasviJaiswal – a shot of pure authority to kick off #TeamIndia's innings! 🙌🏻 The opening pair is looking solid, & the sun is shining bright in England! ☀️🏏 Seekhne nahi, Sikhaane aaye hai 💪 Watch now 👉 — Star Sports (@StarSportsIndia) June 20, 2025 According to Yograj, Gill must set his individual run-scoring target and take the team forward with him. Yuvraj Singh's father also shared his prediction for the five-match series and believes India has the potential to conquer England for the first time in 18 years on English shores. 'A few days ago, I was talking to Yuvraj Singh about Abhishek (Sharma) and Shubman Gill. Yuvraj said he would have to lead from the front. As Shubman Gill goes out to bat, he has to stay at the crease for the maximum time. When a captain leads from the front, and scores run. It is important for Shubman to set a target of 100, 200 or 300. He has to lead from the front. He also has to take everyone forward together, just like Kapil Dev did in the 1983 World Cup. I believe India will win the series,' Yograj Singh was quoted as saying ANI news agency. Earlier, Yograj Singh had slammed MS Dhoni for ending the 'brotherly' culture in the Indian team. '(We had) Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid, VVS Laxman, Javagal Srinath, Anil Kumble, and others. Bhajji (Harbhajan Singh), Yuvi (Yuvraj), Viru (Virender Sehwag), (Mohammed) Kaif, Zaheer (Khan) among youngsters. Combination of elder and younger brothers. That's why they could lead the youngsters and become the greatest of all time. And what we did? We burned out the whole house by just standing for one person. I won't name him. Where is he? See what happened,' said Yograj in an interview to Insidesport website. Meanwhile, Gill lost the toss in his first match as captain and Ben Stokes sent Team India in to bat first.
