Concorso Italiano Adding New Event Friday Night Before Saturday Show

Yahoo10-03-2025

Concorso Italiano has added a new event the night before, featuring all kinds of cars parked in the same space as the big show.
The new event is called The Paddock, held on the grounds of the Bayonet Black Horse Golf Course in Seaside, California, on Friday Aug. 15.
Admission is $49.50, or $82.50 to display a car. Getting into Concorso the next day, Saturday Aug. 16, is $204.50, but only $207.50 to display a car and you get two people in free with each car. So go buy an Alfa Romeo now!
As Concorso Italiano prepares to celebrate its 40th anniversary Saturday, August 16, as part of the annual pre-Pebble Beach festivities, word is a new event will be added the night before.
International Car Week, the new parent company of Concorso Italiano, will hold a multi-marque companion event the Friday before Concorso in the exact same spot at Bayonet Black Horse golf course in Seaside, California.
'We recently gathered representatives from multiple Italian Car Clubs. We had several dozen in the room and in a live feed, and they are all fired up about the event and engaging their club members and car owners,' said a spokesperson. 'It's inspiring.'
The new event will be held 3 pm to 8 pm on Friday, August 15, at Bayonet Black Horse, home of Concorso Italiano. The new happening will be part of the International Car Week concept unfolding as additional events will be held on the property, we were told.
'Ultimately, the Grand Hyatt resort currently under construction will serve as home base for these events, offering top-notch accommodations, restaurants, bars, ballrooms, and more for guests.'
The key word there being, 'ultimately.' It could be three years before the fabulous new Grand Hyatt will be finished.
In the meantime, you can bring your Italian car to what is being called—as near as we can tell—The Paddock, on Friday night, August 16. Admission to The Paddock is $49,50, according to the website. If you want to display a car, it's $82.50.
Admission to Concorso Italiano the next day is $204,50. But, if you display a car it's $207.50 and you can bring two people in (more if you illegally smuggle them in the trunk, which we are not recommending). Motorcycles are $132.50 to get into Concorso Italiano.
'Think of The Paddock as a multi-marque Concorso Italiano event, meant to broaden opportunities on the Peninsula during Monterey Car Week for those excluded from other events,' said the spokesperson (Wait, people are being excluded?).
'If a German, French, American, Italian, or other car club wants a display on the green, we'll make that happen for them. We'll give them their own tent with a bar and food and they can have their own party within our event.'
A bar? Food? Yeah!
The new event starts later in the day Friday to accommodate cars and spectators who may visit The Quail, The Historic Races, or other events earlier in the day, organizers said.
'The Paddock will be held outside in the very same location as Concorso. In fact, the same tents will be in place both days for sponsors, vendors, food service, merch, etc.,' said a release sent to car clubs.
Concorso, meanwhile, will have its usual 'celebration of Italian cars and style (that) will reunite owners, collectors, and enthusiasts for a day of camaraderie and stunning vehicles including Ferrari, Alfa Romeo, Maserati, and more.'
'My goal for the 2025 event is to recapture the spirit of our early days, when guests gathered to reconnect with old friends and forge new connections. The car owners, car clubs, and enthusiasts are the heart and soul of Concorso Italiano,' said Concorso Chairman Tanya Kosta. 'Our 40th anniversary will be a celebration to thank them for making this event so special.'
If anyone has extra trunk space, let me know.

Italy forges on with world's largest suspension bridge

Italy hopes to begin constructing the world's largest suspension bridge connecting Sicily to the Italian mainland this summer amid widespread scepticism that it will ever be built. The 13.5-billion-euro ($15.3-billion) project would carry trains and six lanes of traffic, allowing cars to cross the Strait of Messina in 15 minutes. Giorgia Meloni's hard-right government hopes to boost the economy of the impoverished region, although critics say there are better ways to do this -- and many believe that after decades of false starts, the bridge will never actually happen. The choppy waters between the eastern tip of Sicily and the western edge of the region of Calabria are legendary as the place where monsters Scylla and Charybdis terrified sailors in Homer's epic poem "The Odyssey". These days the challenges are more prosaic, from winds of more than 100 kilometres an hour (62 mph) to the real risk of earthquakes in a region that lies across two tectonic plates. The government says the bridge will be at the cutting edge of engineering, with the section suspended between its two pillars stretching 3.3 kilometres, the longest in the world. But critics point to a long history of public works announced, financed and never completed in Italy, whether due to corruption or political instability, resulting in enormous losses for taxpayers. "The public does not trust this political class and these projects that become endless construction sites," said Luigi Storniolo, a member of protest group No Ponte (No Bridge). Infrastructure Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, one of the main champions of the project, insists it will be a game-changer for the local economy. "The bridge will be a catalyst for development," he said on a recent visit to Reggio di Calabria, the city where the bridge will begin. - 'A senseless project' - The government hopes to boost trade in Sicily, which currently suffers from an "insularity cost" of around 6.5 billion euros a year, according to regional authorities. Meloni's ministers are expected to give their final approval to the project -- which Rome will fund -- later this month, and Salvini insists construction will begin this summer. But work had already been announced for the summer of 2024, before being postponed -- a common theme in the history of the bridge, the idea of which dates back to the unification of Italy at the end of the 19th century. The first law for the project was passed in 1971. Since then, successive governments have either revived it or cancelled it. In 2012, the idea appeared to be definitely abandoned amid the eurozone debt crisis, only for Meloni's government, which took office in 2022, to return to it once again. Salvini has repeatedly stated that the bridge would create 120,000 jobs in Calabria and Sicily, which have the fourth and the 13th highest unemployment rates respectively in the EU for young people under 29. However, the left-wing CGIL trade union estimates around 2,300 workers a year will be hired during the project, and critics say the jobs created will be offset by long-term losses from the closure of ferries. - Mafia risk - The project has sparked local protests, with critics warning of the impact on a protected marine zone and an important bird migratory route. Storniolo told AFP it was a "senseless project" which used up valuable funds when "our regions already suffer from many problems... healthcare, schools, and infrastructure." The Italian Court of Auditors has also criticised the extent of the debt-laden Italian state's investment in this one project in its assessment of the 2024 budget. "They want to make an entire territory believe that its only hope is this bridge -- but then the bridge never arrives," protester Storniolo added. There is also the question of mafia infiltration. The attorney general of Messina recently warned of the risk that organised crime would benefit from the project, noting that "the power of the mafia is hidden... behind public contracts". The government has proposed placing companies relating to the project under control of an anti-mafia structure reporting to the interior ministry. But Italian President Sergio Mattarella blocked this, saying it should only be used for one-off events such as earthquakes or the Olympics. Salvini argued that the bridge can help tackle the mafia, saying: "You do not fight the mafia... with conferences and protests, but by creating jobs and giving hope to young people." str-gab/ar/ide/fg

NYC Mayor Eric Adams helps save Trump-linked Bally's casino bid

Mayor Eric Adams put his chips on the table for Bally's. The City Council voted to advance legislation Wednesday that would allow gaming operator Bally's to convert part of President Trump's former Bronx golf course into a casino — after the mayor intervened to help secure its passage. The proposal — referred to as a home rule message — requires 34 votes from the council for passage without the mayor's backing. But only 26 votes are needed — a simple majority, if the mayor declares his support. 6 NYC Mayor Eric Adams held his weekly presser and media availability inside the Blue Room at City Hall on June 10, 2025. Paul Martinka At the 11th hour on Wednesday, Adams issued a formal message of support to the council, and the measure passed 32-12, with seven abstaining. It means the bill can now be take up by the state Legislature. If approved, it would allow the golf course property, currently designated as state parkland, to be repurposed as a casino complex. Bally's will then be able to submit a bid for one of three covered downstate state casino licenses later this month. 6 Exterior of Bally's casino in Atlantic City on February 20, 2011. LightRocket via Getty Images The firm hopes to build a 500,000-square-foot casino on the Bronx site by its golf course — now called Bally's Golf Links at Ferry Point — along with a 500-room hotel with a spa and meeting space, retail shops, a 2,000-seat event center and two parking garages with capacity for up to 4,660 vehicles. The City Council and Albany lawmakers recently approved such land use legislation allowing Mets owner Steve Cohen and Hard Rock to repurpose some of the lots around Citi Field for a casino complex. Cohen's bill got little to no resistance from the council — but Bally's, with its Trump connection, did. 6 Democratic mayoral candidate Adrienne Adams speaks during a Democratic mayoral primary debate, Wednesday, June 4, 2025, in New York. AP As part of the deal to acquire the golf course at Ferry Point in 2023, Bally's agreed to provide the Trump Organization an additional $115 million if it wins a casino license. As The Post previously reported, a council vote on Bally's proposal was postponed two weeks ago — provoking criticism from its CEO Soo Sim, who also fumed that lobbyists for rival bidder Cohen were allegedly whipping up votes against him. Bronx Democrats back the project. But Councilwoman Kristy Marmarato, a Republican whose district includes Bally's Golf Link at Ferry Point, opposes it. 6 U.S. President Donald Trump waits for German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the White House in Washington, D.C., U.S., June 5, 2025. REUTERS Her opposition triggered five of her GOP colleagues — including Council Minority Leader Joanne Ariola — to vote against the project that could benefit the president and his company. During the vote, Marmarato said her constituents opposed the proposed casino and blasted 'outside interference' and 'special interests' lobbying. City Hall insisted the mayor pushed for Bally's to get a fair hearing from the state Gaming Commission with its casino bid, and wasn't putting his thumb on the scale for the gaming operator or Trump. 6 New York Mayor Eric Adams speaks during a press conference on Public Safety at City Hall on June 03, 2025 in New York City. 'It does not matter which proposal is selected by the state so long as it's in New York City. We would be supportive of more than one selection in New York City, but that requires more than one competitive proposal.' Bally's applauded the Council's action. 6 A general view of Bally's Casino on March 24, 2010 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Getty Images 'We appreciate the City Council, including the Speaker and Bronx Delegation in particular, for recognizing the opportunity that this project can afford to the Bronx and the City as a whole. Their actions today allow us to move forward to the next step of making this happen for NYC,' said Christopher Jewett, Bally's senior vice president of corporate development. He said Bally's has been a 'good neighbor' and will continue to work closely with elected officials and residents. Cohen's team declined to comment.

David Ornstein Confirms Liverpool Striker Move is ‘Possible' After Recent Contact

Liverpool's Forward Focus: Nunez Exit Opens Door for Ekitike After Record-Breaking Wirtz Deal Liverpool's summer window has exploded into life, with business being conducted swiftly and decisively under Arne Slot. Florian Wirtz's arrival, confirmed late Tuesday, will not only obliterate the club's own transfer record but also set new benchmarks across English and German football. At a projected cost of over £115m, it surpasses the Moises Caicedo fee to Chelsea and signals a shift in how the Reds intend to compete. Advertisement As reported by The Athletic's David Ornstein, Wirtz's signing is not the end of Liverpool's spree. 'There is, meanwhile, a possible departure from Merseyside in the form of Darwin Nunez,' Ornstein noted, confirming contact from Al-Hilal for the Uruguayan. While the player is reportedly more inclined to remain in Europe, the financial pull from Saudi Arabia remains a factor. With Wirtz secured and Milos Kerkez close to completing a switch, Liverpool's net summer spend could soon exceed £195m. Yet, there is still desire for a new number nine – and Hugo Ekitike has emerged as the primary target. Ekitike Move Contingent on Outgoings Eintracht Frankfurt's €100m asking price for Ekitike has cooled Chelsea's interest, leaving Liverpool well-positioned – but only if two players depart. As per Sky Germany's Florian Plettenberg, Liverpool must sell two of Diogo Jota, Federico Chiesa or Darwin Nunez before advancing negotiations for the French forward. Photo: IMAGO The strongest indication of an imminent exit centres on Nunez, who has struggled to consistently justify his £85m price tag since joining from Benfica. Al-Hilal's recent inquiry represents a serious push to bring the Uruguayan to the Saudi Pro League, having previously missed out on Mohamed Salah, Bruno Fernandes and Victor Osimhen. Advertisement 'Liverpool rejected a proposal worth €70m from Al Nassr in January, and that sets a minimum bar if an exit is to materialise,' Ornstein wrote. That valuation remains the benchmark if the Reds are to part ways with the 24-year-old. Elliott and Gakpo Future Questions Wirtz's arrival also places questions around the futures of other attackers, particularly Harvey Elliott. The 22-year-old made his stance clear: 'I don't really want to be wasting years of my career because it's a short career.' With Wolves and Newcastle reportedly interested, Elliott's departure would ease squad congestion and raise additional funds. Meanwhile, Cody Gakpo has publicly rejected links to Bayern Munich, while Alisson Becker has reaffirmed his commitment to Anfield, though he has started exploring his next steps, according to reports. Photo: IMAGO Slot's Tactical Evolution Demands Precision Slot's system hinges on high-intensity pressing and fluid attacking movement – a style tailor-made for someone like Wirtz. The German's numbers last season were staggering: 45 appearances, 16 goals and 15 assists. It's a clear statement of intent from Liverpool and an evolution from the more chaotic attacking presence of Nunez. Advertisement Wirtz also represents the most expensive German footballer ever, Bayer Leverkusen's record sale, and the Bundesliga's highest transfer fee to date. It is a transformative deal both on and off the pitch. Our View – Anfield Index Analysis There's a strange inevitability to Darwin Nunez's likely departure. His raw energy and unpredictability created moments of brilliance, but not the consistency a title-winning side demands. With Arne Slot at the helm and Liverpool now reigning champions again, the standards have shifted. Every decision must be calculated, and emotion cannot drive the future. Florian Wirtz is the opposite type of forward – intelligent, composed and ruthlessly efficient. He feels like a player designed for Slot's tactics. His arrival is exciting, but fans will rightly wonder if Liverpool will regret letting Nunez go just as he might have reached his peak. Advertisement The Ekitike interest is intriguing. He's younger, mouldable and potentially a better long-term fit. But can he adapt quickly enough to the Premier League, and will he thrive in the pressure cooker of Anfield? That remains a gamble. Harvey Elliott's frustration is understandable, and while it would hurt to lose a homegrown star, this is a ruthless business now. Wirtz's signing shows Liverpool's hand – trophies are the priority. And if the money from Saudi helps complete that vision, fans may just get behind it, however conflicted they feel.
