‘South cinema was considered a joke in Bollywood…': Roja actor Madhoo responds, recalls how ‘wonderful Jr NTR' changed his look for her
Jr NTR's 2016 film Nannaku Prematho showed the Telugu actor in a never seen avatar. His charming role as Abhiram won several hearts, and the movie even had a smashing opening at the box office. However, did you know that NTR changed his entire 'mohawk' look because his film's co-star, actor Madhoo, teased him for the hairstyle? In a recent interview with Galatta India, the latter opened up about her 'wonderful' first interaction with Jr NTR. Recalling her first meeting with the superstar, Madhoo shared, 'I did a film called Nannaku Prematho with him. In that film, he had mohawk hairstyle. When we went to shoot for the first time in Spain, as soon as I saw him, I said, 'Okay, so this is the look of the hero!' So, he changed himself completely. He is very wonderful.' The host also asked her to reflect on how South cinema was a joke in Bollywood a few years ago. The Hindi audience and memes used to make fun of their films and regional cinema was presented as a joke. However, the past few years have seen a significant shift as South film industry has been receiving appreciation for their content worldwide. 'Pehle jo mazaak udaaya jaata tha, uss cheez se mujhe bahut dukh hota tha (I used to feel bad about the teasing and jokes). Even I had to face this during my childhood. 'Ae Madrasan aa gayi', it had a negative tonality. What do you mean by that?' she revealed. ALSO READ | Madhoo was discontent with the kind of work in Bollywood, said no to a film with Amitabh Bachchan: 'My secretary asked me to reconsider but…' The actor added, 'We are Indians. Why do we make fun of each other? But, all this was accepted at that time, hence we didn't react much. But, we all succumbed to it. I didn't know how to fight it at that time. So, we used to think how to improve our Hindi fluency, so that people shouldn't get to know from my accent that I am a South Indian. But today, the situation has changed and Madhoo wears her ethnicity with pride. 'I don't feel ashamed now. If I say something wrong in Hindi or there's a thickness of South Indian in my accent, I take pride in that. Yes, I am a South Indian and I am speaking Hindi. If you have a problem with my Hindi, then no problem, I can learn it. But when I was young, I was scared of the South Indian tag. There was a fear. I even tried to learn Urdu,' she said. Moreover, the Phool Aur Kaante (1991) actor wanted to start her acting career with Hindi cinema. 'Even when I was wanting to become an actor, I wanted to star in Hindi films. Destiny made me go towards South cinema, but my design wasn't to be there. But today, I am very proud. I consider myself an Indian film actor now,' she concluded. On the work front, Madhoo has several projects in the pipeline, including Hansal Mehta's next Netflix original, a theatrical film with Manoj Bajpayee, and an Amazon Original series in Telugu.

Filmmaker Vignesh Shivan is celebrating the release of Coolie with a heartfelt throwback to the day he first met superstar Rajinikanth. Sharing photos from their first meeting, Shivan wrote that he teared up after meeting Thalaiva. For the unversed, last week, Vignesh Shivan postponed the first look of his upcoming film, Love Insurance Company, due to Rajinikanth's Coolie launch. Taking to social media on the day of the Coolie release, Vignesh Shivan, married to Nayanthara, shared an emotional note that captured both his admiration for Rajinikanth and the excitement of Coolie's first-day-first-show. 'First time I met you, couldn't stop tearing up! Thalaiva…! @rajinikanth Everyone in this industry and everyone who knows you loves you! It's only because you are truly a nice human being! Being a star and being the human you are makes all this love justified! 50 years of entertainment, 50 years of style, 50 years of so much love from so many of your loyal fans — forever shall continue," he wrote, adding a series of heart and angel emojis. Vignesh's words reflect the sentiment of countless Rajinikanth fans who admire not just his unmatched screen presence but also his humility off-screen. As Coolie hit theatres on August 14, the director couldn't contain his excitement, writing, 'Coolieeeeeeee morning FDFS! So excited! Wishing the best for everyone involved." Take a look: View this post on Instagram A post shared by Vignesh Shivan (@wikkiofficial) Coolie leaked online on piracy sites Within hours of its release, Rajinikanth's Coolie fell prey to piracy, with links surfacing across notorious sites such as Tamilrockers, Filmyzilla, Movierulez, and Moviesda. High-definition 1080p prints to low-quality 240p versions were circulated online, catering to every kind of viewer. The leak spree quickly spilled over to Telegram, where multiple channels shared the full film for free, making it accessible to a wide audience illegally. Streaming Coolie through pirated sources doesn't just rob the makers of their rightful earnings — it's also a criminal offence under Indian copyright law. Offenders can face penalties of up to Rs 2 lakh and, in some cases, imprisonment. Cybersecurity specialists caution that piracy websites come with hidden dangers, including malware, spyware, and phishing traps. These threats can compromise personal data, lead to hacked accounts, or result in financial fraud. Many such platforms also host adult or gambling content, posing additional risks, especially for younger audiences. Rajinikanth's Coolie clashed with Jr NTR and Hrithik Roshan's Hindi release, War 2, at the box office. view comments First Published: August 14, 2025, 15:00 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
