‘South cinema was considered a joke in Bollywood…': Roja actor Madhoo responds, recalls how ‘wonderful Jr NTR' changed his look for her
Recalling her first meeting with the superstar, Madhoo shared, 'I did a film called Nannaku Prematho with him. In that film, he had mohawk hairstyle. When we went to shoot for the first time in Spain, as soon as I saw him, I said, 'Okay, so this is the look of the hero!' So, he changed himself completely. He is very wonderful.'
The host also asked her to reflect on how South cinema was a joke in Bollywood a few years ago. The Hindi audience and memes used to make fun of their films and regional cinema was presented as a joke. However, the past few years have seen a significant shift as South film industry has been receiving appreciation for their content worldwide. 'Pehle jo mazaak udaaya jaata tha, uss cheez se mujhe bahut dukh hota tha (I used to feel bad about the teasing and jokes). Even I had to face this during my childhood. 'Ae Madrasan aa gayi', it had a negative tonality. What do you mean by that?' she revealed.

The actor added, 'We are Indians. Why do we make fun of each other? But, all this was accepted at that time, hence we didn't react much. But, we all succumbed to it. I didn't know how to fight it at that time. So, we used to think how to improve our Hindi fluency, so that people shouldn't get to know from my accent that I am a South Indian.
But today, the situation has changed and Madhoo wears her ethnicity with pride. 'I don't feel ashamed now. If I say something wrong in Hindi or there's a thickness of South Indian in my accent, I take pride in that. Yes, I am a South Indian and I am speaking Hindi. If you have a problem with my Hindi, then no problem, I can learn it. But when I was young, I was scared of the South Indian tag. There was a fear. I even tried to learn Urdu,' she said.
Moreover, the Phool Aur Kaante (1991) actor wanted to start her acting career with Hindi cinema. 'Even when I was wanting to become an actor, I wanted to star in Hindi films. Destiny made me go towards South cinema, but my design wasn't to be there. But today, I am very proud. I consider myself an Indian film actor now,' she concluded.
On the work front, Madhoo has several projects in the pipeline, including Hansal Mehta's next Netflix original, a theatrical film with Manoj Bajpayee, and an Amazon Original series in Telugu.

From Gabbar's lair to Basanti's village: Ramanagara celebrates 50 years of ‘Sholay'
New Delhi: Fifty years after 'Sholay' blazed onto the silver screen, the rocky hills of Karnataka's Ramanagara district still seem to hold its spirit -- the tyranny of Gabbar Singh, the camaraderie between Jai and Veeru, and Basanti's never-ending chatter. The cult classic about two small-time criminals who are hired by a vengeful ex-policeman to capture the ruthless dacoit Gabbar Singh was released in theatres on August 15, 1975 and forever changed Indian cinema. The action-adventure movie, directed by Ramesh Sippy from a script penned by iconic writers Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar, was praised for its gripping storytelling, powerful dialogues and unforgettable characters played by Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra, Hema Malini, Jaya Bachchan, Sanjeev Kumar and Amjad Khan. For Ramadevara Betta, the granite-strewn hillscape in Ramanagara that doubled as the fictional village of 'Ramgarh', the film etched itself into the very soul of the land. The rugged terrain of Ramadevara Betta (hill in Kannada) served as the backdrop for Gabbar Singh's lair. It was the stage for some of Hindi cinema's most quotable scenes, including the one where the menacing Gabbar asks his henchmen, 'Kitne aadmi the?' Filming began in October 1973 and lasted nearly two-and-a-half years, with an entire township built for the shoot and a road constructed from the Bangalore-Mysore highway to the sets. The production transformed the area, with locals still recalling the nearly three-year-long presence of the cast and crew. Many also got a chance to be in front of the cameras as background characters. Among them was Boramma, who was just seven when she faced the camera for a small role in 'Sholay'. 'I still remember everything. There's a scene with Hema Malini and Dharmendra in the mango orchards, it was filmed here. On the other side was the village. It used to be a dense forest, but for the film, they converted it into a village. 'After 'Sholay', many more movies were shot here. Ramadevara became famous because of 'Sholay'. The shoot went on for three years. They built roads for filming and all the Gabbar Singh scenes were done here,' Boramma, who is now in her 50s, told PTI. Another local Bettayya said his parents worked on the sets during the shooting. 'I was 15 years old. My parents worked on the sets. I don't remember too many details of the shoot, but they used to give us good food. Dharmendra would give Rs 100 to the elderly. There used to be a narrow road to the betta, but they constructed a proper mud road for the shoot. Later, the Forest Department turned it into a tar road,' he recalled. 'Because of Sholay, our village, community, and district are still remembered in the whole of India. Our government has made all those places good tourism spots, and people come from all over India to see them,' one person said. They are also proud of the film's success and its lasting impact on Indian cinema. ''The film that was shot here fifty years ago has spread the name of Amitabh Bachchan and Ramnagar far and wide,' a local said.

Now, Arden Cho, May Hong, and Ji Young Yoo, the stars behind the voices of the demon-hunting K-pop girl group HUNTR/X (Huntrix), are sharing their experience on receiving unexpected love and admiration from all over the world. The actresses sat down for an interview with Gold Derby and discussed the possibility of receiving awards and recognition from popular K-pop artists like BTS. For Arden, who plays Rumi, the lead vocalist of Huntrix, the possibility of getting an Oscar feels surreal. She said, 'It would be such an honour. From BTS to Seventeen, some of the industry's biggest names have praised the film and its authenticity. When asked how they reacted after watching famous personalities embracing their film, the actresses shared that it was a 'we did it" moment. Arden mentioned, 'That stamp of approval! We're like… Yes, we did it! I think we're just so thankful because all of these idols and artists who are loving the movie have really helped us get here." May Hong added, 'When I see that they all have millions and millions of followers, I also can't wrap my mind around that they're so into what we have done. Obviously, we didn't sing or dance personally, but still. Even with Lee Byung Hun [the Squid Game actor who voiced Gwi Ma, the king of demons in KPop Demon Hunters], it's like, so that person knows I exist?" Sharing that they were initially worried about whether the audience would accept the depiction of Korea in the film, Young Yoo quipped, 'We wanted to make sure we got Korea right, that we got the culture right. All of us were like, 'Will they approve? Will they accept it?' So to see them not just accept it but embrace it, and support it, and give us so much love, is just the biggest sigh of relief. " She further added, 'The warmth that spread through our bodies when all of this started happening was really just wonderful, and as an ARMY for 10 years, going on 11 now, there's no words. I felt my organs shut down (when BTS mentioned the film)." Arden explained that the moment was unforgettable. 'All of our phones were blowing up. Everyone was like, 'Did you see it?'" she revealed. Meanwhile, Ji Young Yoo candidly mentioned, 'Everyone kept asking me what I thought, and there's no thoughts. I thought I might faint."
