K-Pop Demon Hunters' Cast Reveals How They Reacted To BTS' Shout-Out
KPop Demon Hunters has broken several records, including becoming Netflix's biggest animated original feature ever and the second most-streamed English original movie of all time.
Netflix's K-pop Demon Hunters has become a global phenomenon. Released on the streaming platform on June 20, the animated musical has broken several records, including becoming Netflix's biggest animated original feature ever and the second most-streamed English original movie of all time. And that's not all, Golden, one of the songs in the film's soundtrack, made history on the Billboard Hot 100 chart by becoming the first K-pop girl group song, although fictional, to top the chart.
Now, Arden Cho, May Hong, and Ji Young Yoo, the stars behind the voices of the demon-hunting K-pop girl group HUNTR/X (Huntrix), are sharing their experience on receiving unexpected love and admiration from all over the world. The actresses sat down for an interview with Gold Derby and discussed the possibility of receiving awards and recognition from popular K-pop artists like BTS.
For Arden, who plays Rumi, the lead vocalist of Huntrix, the possibility of getting an Oscar feels surreal. She said, 'It would be such an honour. We feel so lucky just to be here and to be receiving all this love. It's amazing to be part of a movie that makes everybody feel good." May Hong, who voiced Mira, shared that she couldn't 'wrap" her head around the fact that their film is contending for Oscars.
Ji Young Yoo, who was the voice behind Zoey, the maknae of Huntrix, agreed to what May said and added, 'I think the fact that we went from making a movie that I think we all really loved and cared about to it developing into this phenomenon worldwide, to what is quickly becoming an Oscar and awards run…I'm just along for the ride, and I'll process it all after."
KPop Demon Hunters not only received positive reactions from the viewers but also got a seal of approval from real-life K-pop artists. From BTS to Seventeen, some of the industry's biggest names have praised the film and its authenticity. When asked how they reacted after watching famous personalities embracing their film, the actresses shared that it was a 'we did it" moment.
Arden mentioned, 'That stamp of approval! We're like… Yes, we did it! I think we're just so thankful because all of these idols and artists who are loving the movie have really helped us get here." May Hong added, 'When I see that they all have millions and millions of followers, I also can't wrap my mind around that they're so into what we have done. Obviously, we didn't sing or dance personally, but still. Even with Lee Byung Hun [the Squid Game actor who voiced Gwi Ma, the king of demons in KPop Demon Hunters], it's like, so that person knows I exist?"
Sharing that they were initially worried about whether the audience would accept the depiction of Korea in the film, Young Yoo quipped, 'We wanted to make sure we got Korea right, that we got the culture right. All of us were like, 'Will they approve? Will they accept it?' So to see them not just accept it but embrace it, and support it, and give us so much love, is just the biggest sigh of relief. "
She further added, 'The warmth that spread through our bodies when all of this started happening was really just wonderful, and as an ARMY for 10 years, going on 11 now, there's no words. I felt my organs shut down (when BTS mentioned the film)." Arden explained that the moment was unforgettable. 'All of our phones were blowing up. Everyone was like, 'Did you see it?'" she revealed. Meanwhile, Ji Young Yoo candidly mentioned, 'Everyone kept asking me what I thought, and there's no thoughts. I thought I might faint."
A sing-along theatrical version of KPop Demon Hunters is set ot be released on August 23 and 24.

Saare Jahan Se Accha shows a human, real spy, away from the flashy style of James Bond: Pratik Gandhi
For Pratik Gandhi, his new show, Saare Jahan Se Accha is more spy drama than a thriller. "That drama is a big part because we are dealing with complex human emotions," he tells us, explaining what separates the Netflix series from the overpopulated genre of spy thrillers in vogue today. Pratik spoke to HT along with the show's creators about its unique space and approach. Pratik Gandhi plays a spy in Netflix's Saare Jahan Se Accha. Keeping it real Saare Jahan Se Accha tells the story of a RAW agent in Pakistan in the 1970s, whose mission is to prevent the nation from becoming an atomic power. Based on true events, the show gives up the swanky Bond and Pathaan-style narrative of espionage for one grounded in realism. The show's creator, Gaurav Arora, explains, "The hyper-realistic style is to show a very stylish spy with good-looking women and in exotic locations. My attempt was to keep it very real and to show their pain and pressure." What separates Saare Jahan Se Accha from other spy dramas is how it treats the 'enemy'. Its depiction of ISI agents and Pakistani Army officials as humans instead of one-dimensional characters has been noted. Sejal Shah, the producer, explains, 'The idea was not to make a spectacle but to tell a story driven by the characters. And that is what we have here, characters who have a story - and both sides have stories.' Not James Bond Pratik plays Vishnu in the show, an Indian spy embedded in Pakistan. Talking about playing an everyman spy, he says, "James Bond was my first-ever introduction to spies. I always felt that anyone who plays a spy on screen will be a very flashy, flamboyant guy, very charming. He can do anything. He is almost a superhero. That was my initial understanding in my growing-up days. But I wouldn't call this series a spy thriller. It is a spy drama. That makes it absolutely fresh for me as an actor." Saare Jahan Se Accha also stars Sunny Hinduja, Tillotama Shome, Anup Soni, Kritika Kamra, and Suhail Nayyar. The show is currently streaming on Netflix.
