Afraid To Retire? How To Approach Later Life Differently

If thinking about retiring worries you or makes you nervous–you're not alone. In a recent survey, 61% of the respondents said they feared retirement more than death!
And while many of the respondents cited financial concerns as a major reason for their fear, many had social and personal reasons, as well:
And I suspect these kinds of concerns might actually be more prevalent than the survey showed, because talking about financial concerns is easier than talking about emotional difficulties. That is, for many people, it's less uncomfortable to say 'I'm worried about having enough money in retirement' than it is to say, 'I'm worried about losing my social connections and my identity.'
When I was interviewing people in their 60s. 70s and 80s for my latest book, The New Old, one very brave and honest interviewee told me this had been his biggest fear about leaving his job as a senior executive. He said, 'I was embarrassed to feel this, but it was true. My identity was so wrapped up in my career, that I simply couldn't imagine who I would be if I was no longer doing that work. It took me awhile to figure out.'
I think this is at least partly true for most of us who have had responsible, demanding jobs–especially when those jobs have been very meaningful to us. I found myself in this situation in my late 60s, when I realized that I wanted to start stepping back from Proteus International, the company I had created and run for over 30 years. It made me very anxious, and so I decided to use an approach for facing and overcoming fears that had served me in good stead for many years:
As soon as I noticed my anxiety, I made the effort to name my fear (step 1). And what I saw after some self-reflection was that I didn't know who I would be if I wasn't working many hours a week as 'the founder and CEO of Proteus.' I had spent decades with that as a big and important (to me) part of my identity–and the idea of not having that was scary.
I asked myself what was the worst thing that could happen to me in this situation (step 2), and I realized that it was the possibility of not having a clear sense of identity and not having impact or influence, that is, not making any positive difference in the world.
I then thought about how I could make that outcome less likely, and I understood that I needed to clarify what I wanted my post-work identity to be (step 3).
I started by summarizing my curiosity about my later-life identity into a simple question. That question was, 'How can I become what comes after the butterfly?' Here's how I came to that: up to that point, I had been thinking of my life as being like the evolution of a caterpillar to a butterfly. I saw my childhood and youth as the caterpillar stage, and it seemed to me that the deeply self-reflective time I spent in a spiritual community in my twenties was 'being in the cocoon.' I saw being the mother of my children and founder and CEO of my company as my butterfly stage.
However, unlike an actual butterfly, I was now seeing that stage wasn't the end for me: I had to discover and build my next stage of evolution. Creating that curious question–'How can I become what comes after the butterfly? –helped me move past my fear into finding answers to that question that resonated for me and making plans to help ensure I moved in that direction (step 4).
Then, I began taking action to move toward that new post-butterfly identity, (part of which, for me, was writing The New Old.)
So, I encourage you to feel and name your fears about retiring, and then let yourself acknowledge the worst things that could happen if those fears came true. Allow yourself to see and name even the deep, difficult things like, 'I could feel useless," or "People might see me as being less valuable.'
Once you've let yourself see and feel those fears and have said to yourself as honestly as possible what they are (step 1), you can get clear about the worst that could happen relative to them (step 2). Then, you can move through those fears by deciding how to make them less likely or less negative (step 3). Finally, you can plan to do that and take action to implement your plans (step 4).
Once you've seen what you're most afraid of in changing your relationship to work, and are doing what you need to do to move through and past those fears, you might be surprised. Many of the folks I interviewed for The New Old have found a new sense of joy and meaning in the later lives they're creating for themselves. Some are building knowledge or skills that always interested them, but that they never had the time to pursue previously. Some are building 'portfolio" lives consisting of some of the work they've done before and most enjoyed - as consultants or in a volunteer capacity - and other work they've decided to explore. Still others are devoting their time to pure play: travel, sports, time with friends and family.
And I have to say, I'm having a marvelous time in my 70s; I feel like I have the time and bandwidth to discover and explore new things every day, and to continue to support my business in the ways my partners (who are now running it) find most helpful. As a friend of mine said, when I shared this with her, 'Yes. Purpose doesn't retire.'

However, this final push eliminates paper checks entirely. What you need to know If you're still receiving paper checks, you will need to choose an electronic payment method before the September deadline. Otherwise, the SSA will automatically enroll you in a pre-paid debit card program. Here are your two options: 1. Direct deposit You can have your benefit sent straight to your checking or savings account. You'll need to provide your bank account and routing number to set up an electronic transfer. This is the fastest and most common method as it allows your benefits to be delivered quickly and you can spend the money as you typically would. 2. Direct Express debit card For people who don't have a bank account or prefer not to use direct deposit, this government-backed prepaid card offers a secure alternative. You can use it to withdraw cash, make purchases and track spending, just like a regular debit card. To sign up or make changes, log in to your my Social Security account or visit Choosing the right option depends on your situation. If you already have a bank account, direct deposit is likely the simplest choice. Providing your bank account and routing number will not allow anyone to pull money from your account without permission, only deposit funds. If you don't have a bank account, the Direct Express card provides a secure way to access your benefits. Here are a few steps you can take to make the transition smoother: Act early: Don't wait until the last minute to sign up. The SSA recommends making the switch well before the September 30 deadline Ask for help: SSA reps are available by phone, online or in-person at SSA offices to walk you through the process Monitor your accounts: After the switch, make sure to check your account or Direct Express balance to ensure funds arrive as expected Know the signs of a scam: The SSA will never ask for personal details via email or text. It will never offer to hold your funds to protect them, or ask you to convert assets into other forms of payment, such as gold or gift cards. While the shift away from paper checks might feel abrupt to some recipients, the SSA says it's committed to supporting individuals through the process. Don't be afraid to reach out for help. Philips CEO Jeff DiLullo on how AI is changing healthcare today

AI is quietly reshaping the efficiency, power, and potential of U.S. healthcare, even as government health policy and spending drastically shift. Philips, the legacy electronics manufacturer turned medtech provider, is leading the AI healthcare revolution, streamlining and accelerating the workflow of patient care. Philips North America CEO Jeff DiLullo shares how technology can have the biggest impact on health outcomes today—from radiology scans to cancer diagnoses, and what it takes for leaders in any industry to rethink the way we work to best meet the moment. This is an abridged transcript of an interview from Rapid Response, hosted by the former editor-in-chief of Fast Company Bob Safian. There's a lot of talk about it, but in some businesses, I feel like the conversation about it is ahead of the actual implementation or the impact, and I'm curious how true that might be in medtech. How is AI impacting things now, today, versus what you think it can do in the future? If you remember, we released the Future of Health Index. One of the things that we realized is that AI, in some of these compartments I'm talking about, is quite mature. FDA cleared, very safe for clinical use. Other areas, it's more experimental. But the trust factor of the use of that AI is actually quite nascent. It's the biggest barrier right now to larger scale deployment. Yeah. That health index that you mentioned, the 2025 Future Health Index, I mean, there was this sort of trust gap in it, right? That something like 60, 65% of clinicians trust AI, but only about a third of patients or certainly older patients do. How do you bridge that gap? Is it Philips's job to bridge that gap? Whose job is it? So I have the benefit of having two Gen Zs and a millennial, they are digitally fluid. They don't worry at all about the AI models that are coming on the other side of this because they're used to it and they understand it. Older patients, not so much. The magic is always the healthcare practitioner that's directly interfacing with the customers or the patients. If they believe what they're doing, if they know it's credible, if they're using it to augment their analysis or their diagnostics, not replacing it, I think ultimately we'll see an uplift. It's our job to provide valid FDA-cleared, very good diagnostic capability leveraging AI. But if our doctors and nurses believe what we're doing and they see the value in increasing their time with patients and also a little de-stressing, we think it's going to really pick up in a parabolic way in the next few years, at least in health. I can understand and see how AI can quickly help some of the back office functionality in healthcare, but you're talking about for practitioners, right? How does that practically work today? So I'm going to give you, let's talk radiology. It's the biggest field right now, diagnostic, right? The earlier the diagnostic, the better the outcome most likely. And when I think of a radiologist, I have to wait a month and a half. I'm in a pretty nice part of Vanderbilt University area, like a lot of health tech around me in Nashville, but I've got to wait over a month to get a scan. So in radiology, we start with the box or the design, right? I have an MRI that is highly efficient. I can move it around, I can put it on a truck. But today, I can get a scan done in half or even a third of the time. The AI built into the system software makes it much faster. Just a few months ago, I had a scan that took only 20 minutes—whereas a couple of years ago, the same scan would have taken about 45 minutes. The smart speed that we have on the system actually compresses the scanning time. It doesn't fill in the blanks, it removes the noise. You actually get a better scan in a shorter time. If you're a radiologist having to do 12 or 15 studies a day, but you can do 20 studies a day, I get more patients through, I drive more reimbursement, it's better for the hospital, it's better for patient care. Then I take it into workflow, and today I can pinpoint things that are happening in that digital image and send it to a radiologist and say, 'You should look here,' in just very simple speak. It's very complicated stuff, but the AI is already mainstream today where we can actually pinpoint areas for radiologists to look at and make a determination. I can digitize the whole process today with digital pathology. And I can have a finding where somebody's waiting, do I have cancer or not? I can do this in hours now because it's all digital. And that kind of workflow and orchestration is a game changer. And the issue of AI hallucinations, which show up with some of the generative AI things, does that apply to healthcare? Are there different kinds of safeguards? Because I guess there's a human who's checking. There's so many things today, like smart speed I just talked about, being able to run that radiology workflow to compress the time of diagnostics, run the tumor boards in hours, on-demand meetings like you and I would on Zoom or teams, all of that is happening today, but not happening at the pace it could. My point is, go do that right now. Every health system, go do that. As you start to unpack these more generative AI models, I think there's real reason to be cautious and make sure we have the right controls and the governance on them, but not experimenting in them also is not an option. We kind of have to. But we see leading institutions, MGB, Stanford, Mount Sinai in New York, we see them really working with population health data to really try to train models on very specific and even broad use cases. There's so much to do right now. In other words, you don't have to go all the way out to the silver bullet of, we're going to live forever or we're going to solve every health problem. You can make the system we have right now more efficient and more effective today. Bob, when you first drove a car, was the first thing you did to go to the Autobahn? Probably not. There's so much to do in the neighborhood. There's so much to do in my town that I can really get good at what we're doing and drive productivity at scale. You need to have the innovation and the creativity to get us to the next place, but 80% of it we can do today. That is just game-changing in terms of how we deliver today, and that's what we think is really the next opportunity here for healthcare. And I think that'll happen with what's mature in AI and virtual capabilities in the next few years because the need is so great.

Workday: Data Breach, Hack Exposes Personal Information

In a blog post on Friday, Workday, a popular platform used for hiring and job applications, revealed it was the target of a breach that exposed personal information to hackers. The company said it was one of "many large organizations" targeted as part of a "social engineering campaign." The company said "threat actors" accessed information "from a third-party CRM platform" that includes "commonly available business contact information, like names, email addresses, and phone numbers, potentially to further their social engineering scams." "Their goal is to trick employees into giving up account access or their personal information," the company said. Workday counts more than 11,000 corporations as customers, with a reach of 70 million people globally, per its website. The company reminded customers in the blog post that, like your bank, it will never contact you by phone to request a password or any details. Although a connection has not yet been publicly announced, TechCrunch notes that in just the last few weeks, Google, Cisco, Quantas, and Pandora have announced breaches from their Salesforce databases.
