
Astronomers get picture of aftermath of a star's double detonation
But a rarer kind of supernova involves a different type of star - a stellar ember called a white dwarf - and a double detonation. Researchers have obtained photographic evidence of this type of supernova for the first time, using the European Southern Observatory's Chile-based Very Large Telescope.
The back-to-back explosions obliterated a white dwarf that had a mass roughly equal to the sun and was located about 160,000 light‑years from Earth in the direction of the constellation Dorado in a galaxy near the Milky Way called the Large Magellanic Cloud. A light-year is the distance light travels in a year, 5.9 trillion miles (9.5 trillion km).
The image shows the scene of the explosion roughly 300 years after it occurred, with two concentric shells of the element calcium moving outward.
This type of explosion, called a Type Ia supernova, would have involved the interaction between a white dwarf and a closely orbiting companion star - either another white dwarf or an unusual star rich in helium - in what is called a binary system.
The primary white dwarf through its gravitational pull would begin to siphon helium from its companion. The helium on the white dwarf's surface at some point would become so hot and dense that it would detonate, producing a shockwave that would compress and ignite the star's underlying core and trigger a second detonation.
"Nothing remains. The white dwarf is completely disrupted," said Priyam Das, a doctoral student in astrophysics at the University of New South Wales Canberra in Australia, lead author of the study published on Wednesday in the journal Nature Astronomy.
"The time delay between the two detonations is essentially set by the time it takes the helium detonation to travel from one pole of the star all the way around to the other. It's only about two seconds," said astrophysicist and study co-author Ivo Seitenzahl, a visiting scientist at the Australian National University in Canberra.
In the more common type of supernova, a remnant of the massive exploded star is left behind in the form of a dense neutron star or a black hole.
The researchers used the Very Large Telescope's Multi-Unit Spectroscopic Explorer, or MUSE, instrument to map the distribution of different chemical elements in the supernova aftermath. Calcium is seen in blue in the image - an outer ring caused by the first detonation and an inner ring by the second.
These two calcium shells represent "the perfect smoking-gun evidence of the double-detonation mechanism," Das said.
"We can call this forensic astronomy - my made-up term - since we are studying the dead remains of stars to understand what caused the death," Das said.
Stars with up to eight times the mass of our sun appear destined to become a white dwarf. They eventually burn up all the hydrogen they use as fuel. Gravity then causes them to collapse and blow off their outer layers in a "red giant" stage, eventually leaving behind a compact core - the white dwarf. The vast majority of these do not explode as supernovas.
While scientists knew of the existence of Type Ia supernovas, there had been no clear visual evidence of such a double detonation until now. Type Ia supernovas are important in terms of celestial chemistry in that they forge heavier elements such as calcium, sulfur and iron.
"This is essential for understanding galactic chemical evolution including the building blocks of planets and life," Das said.
A shell of sulfur also was seen in the new observations of the supernova aftermath.
Iron is a crucial part of Earth's planetary composition and, of course, a component of human red blood cells.
In addition to its scientific importance, the image offers aesthetic value.
"It's beautiful," Seitenzahl said. "We are seeing the birth process of elements in the death of a star. The Big Bang only made hydrogen and helium and lithium. Here we see how calcium, sulfur or iron are made and dispersed back into the host galaxy, a cosmic cycle of matter."

Chile takes new steps to save endangered Darwin's frog
SANTIAGO :Chile has launched a new effort to save the endangered Darwin's frog, a tiny amphibian with leaf-like skin whose males carry tadpoles within pouches in their mouths. The initiative from the Chilean government's climate change and sustainability committee seeks to protect habitats and reproductive areas, including by working with private landowners. The goal is to discover new populations, if possible, of Darwin's frog and substantially increase the area inhabited by current populations. The frog, originally thought to be a single species, actually comprises two: the endangered Rhinoderma darwinii (Southern Darwin's frog) and the Rhinoderma rufum (Northern Darwin's frog), which is categorized as "critically endangered" and has already virtually disappeared. The frog, which measures 3 cm (1.18 inches), was discovered in Chile's southern Chiloe islands by Charles Darwin during his 1834 trip around the world. Forest fires, climate change, invasive species and urbanization have hurt the humid forests of southern Chile and Argentina where the Darwin's frog typically lives. Charif Tala, head of the Environment Ministry's Species Conservation Department, said the fragmentation of Chile's forests has caused the number of populations in Chile and Argentina to decline to 62. The monitoring of frog populations only began in recent years, the ministry said, after a dramatic decline. Andres Valenzuela, director of a Chilean advocacy nonprofit called NGO Ranita de Darwin, said he hoped the initiative would bring more awareness of the frog's plight to people throughout Chile. "We are very hopeful that this will allow us to improve conservation ... and that the people of our country will begin to appreciate these unique and important species we have in our native forests," Valenzuela said.

NASA says 20% of workforce to depart space agency
WASHINGTON :About 20 per cent of the employees at the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration are set to depart the space agency, a NASA spokesperson said on Friday. Around 3,870 individuals are expected to depart, but that number may change in the coming days and weeks, the spokesperson said, adding that the remaining number of employees at the agency would be around 14,000.

Avoid the sun? Studies show moderate exposure may still benefit your health
For decades, many doctors have said that less is more when it comes to sun exposure. Ultraviolet light from the sun can age the skin and cause skin cancer, and people can get Vitamin D from food or supplements instead. But in recent years, some scientists have questioned this thinking after research suggested that moderate sun exposure may, at least in certain contexts, have some benefits. And that Vitamin D supplements may not always be a good substitute. 'The 'never go outside without SPF 50' approach treated sun exposure as if it were universally harmful,' said Dr Lucy McBride, an internal medicine physician in Washington, DC. But 'moderate, thoughtful sun exposure,' in accordance with your risk factors, she added, 'may offer benefits we're still discovering.' SUNSHINE HAS A BRIGHT SIDE It's undeniable that the sun's rays can damage your skin in ways that result in premature skin ageing and cancer, said Dr Elizabeth Ko, an internal medicine physician at UCLA Health who has written about the health effects of sun exposure. But researchers have also identified a handful of potential, if limited, associations between sun exposure and health benefits. Research has found that spending more time in the sun is associated with lower blood pressure. Blood pressure tends to be higher in the winter than in the summer, said Dr Richard Weller, a dermatologist and researcher at the University of Edinburgh, and heart problems are more common then, too. One study found that people who reported more sunlight exposure were less likely to develop heart failure. Researchers aren't sure why sunlight might improve heart health, but they do know that it causes the skin to release a gas called nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels and reduces blood pressure, Dr Weller said. Some researchers have wondered if that could result in a longer life. In a 2014 study that followed nearly 30,000 Swedish women for 20 years, scientists found that those who avoided the sun were twice as likely to die during that time period as those most exposed to sunlight – even though the sun-seeking women were more likely to be diagnosed with melanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer. Sunlight may also help support the immune system by controlling inflammation and immune cells. In one small study of 11 multiple sclerosis patients, researchers found that ultraviolet B light activated certain immune cells that calmed inflammation and eased symptoms. Other research has shown that UV light exposure can improve symptoms in people with eczema, psoriasis and other immune-related conditions, Dr McBride said. Basking in the sun could also make you happier, Dr Ko added. Some studies suggest that exposure to UV light can increase blood levels of serotonin, a chemical that helps regulate mood. Of course, it's hard to to tell if the sunlight itself is responsible for these health benefits, Dr McBride said. People who are exposed to a lot of sunlight may also engage in more physical activity and spend more time in nature than other people do, she said, all of which may independently boost mood and physical health. IT MAY NOT (JUST) BE THE VITAMIN D A well-known benefit of sun exposure is that it triggers the body to produce Vitamin D, which helps to build and maintain bones. Past observational research has linked low levels of Vitamin D with increased risks of certain conditions like heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and colorectal cancer. Would ingesting Vitamin D from fortified foods or supplements reduce the risk of these conditions, eliminating the need for potentially harmful sun exposure? Large clinical trials over the past several years have not confirmed this, Dr Weller said. In a 2019 clinical trial, researchers concluded that taking Vitamin D supplements did not reduce the likelihood of developing Type 2 diabetes in about 2,400 adults who had risk factors for the condition. And a 2020 trial of about 26,000 adults in the United States found that Vitamin D supplements did not reduce the risk of developing cancer or cardiovascular problems, nor did it reduce the overall risk of death over the study period, which averaged about five years. These studies, along with those showing the immune and blood pressure benefits of sunshine, suggest that sunlight may benefit us beyond just Vitamin D production, Dr McBride said. DON'T DITCH YOUR SUNSCREEN The research on sunshine's potential benefits is still quite limited, so it's hard to know how to interpret or apply it, or how to square it with the risks for skin cancer, Dr McBride said. And you shouldn't stop using sun protection altogether, she said. Dr Ko recommended avoiding direct sun exposure between 10am and 2pm, 'when the rays are the brightest and strongest.' If you can't do that, wear sunscreen or other protection such as wide-brimmed hats or sun-protective clothing. Ultimately, it may make sense to consider sunlight's potential benefits along with its harms, Dr McBride said. 'Skin cancer remains a serious threat,' she said. 'But it is about moving beyond fear-based, one-size-fits-all messaging.'
