Onsemi posts quarterly revenue drop, sees dull third-quarter profit on market uncertainty

Aug 4 (Reuters) - U.S. automotive chipmaker Onsemi on Monday forecast lackluster profit for the third quarter, after reporting a sharp decline in second-quarter revenue, sending its shares down by more than 10%. Sales growth in battery electric vehicles has slowed due to an uncertain economic environment, brought on by global import duties, and elevated borrowing costs in the U.S. Consumers have hit the breaks on big-ticket spending as tariffs threaten to increase the costs of automobiles by thousands of dollars and drive up inflation. This has been forcing automakers to reassess production plans and withhold financial investments, affecting companies such as Onsemi. The company acknowledged during its earnings call that the EV market remains soft, especially in North America and Europe, with recovery being slower than hoped. However, Onsemi said it sees "signs of stabilization" across its end markets, after a prolonged slump in demand due to excess chip supply. The company is among a select group of suppliers providing silicon carbide chips, which are critical for extending the range of EVs. It added that it has not yet seen a broad-based recovery in automotive and expects only low single-digit growth in the third quarter. An end to the $7,500 federal tax credit for electric cars has also cast a cloud over the EV industry's outlook, with some firms expecting a hit to the market growth, opens new tab. Onsemi expects third-quarter adjusted earnings between 54 cents and 64 cents per share, compared with analysts' average estimate of 59 cents, according to data compiled by LSEG. It forecast revenue of $1.47 billion and $1.57 billion for the third quarter, the midpoint of which is slightly above estimates of $1.50 billion. The company's second-quarter revenue of $1.47 billion beat expectations of $1.45 billion, but fell about 15% from a year ago.

GWM launches Poer 300 in UK as diesel pick-up for £31k

Great Wall Motor (GWM), maker of the Ora 03 hatchback and Haval Jolion Pro crossover, is bringing a pick-up truck to the UK - and it will be one of the country's cheapest. The GWM Poer 300 is a diesel-powered double-cab with a towing capacity of 3.5 tonnes, a one-tonne payload and a starting price of £31,495 (excluding VAT) - making it cheaper than the equivalent versions of the Isuzu D-Max, Volkswagen Amarok and Maxus T60 Max - and only a few hundred pounds more than the cheapest Ford Ranger and KGM Musso. The Poer 300 uses a 2.4-litre four-cylinder engine that sends 181bhp and 354lb ft through a seven-speed auto gearbox to both axles - and while GWM has not given full performance details, it says it returns 32.7mpg on the WLTP cycle. Headline off-roading specifications include an approach angle of 27deg, a departure angle of 25deg and 230mm of ground clearance, which, combined with the permanent 4x4 system and electronic locking rear differential, means the Poer 300 has "exceptional off-road capability", according to GWM. Already on sale in Australia as the Cannon Ute, the Poer 300 is due on UK roads from September in a choice of three trims: entry-level Lux, mid-rung Ultra and range-topping Vanta. Standard equipment includes a 12.3in touchscreen with wireless smartphone mirroring, a 7.0in digital driver's display, a wireless phone charger, keyless entry, faux leather seats and 18in alloy wheels. Options fitted to higher-spec variants include heated and ventilated seats, ambient lighting, a 360deg camera and a sunroof. GWM UK boss Toby Marshall said: 'With the Poer 300, GWM UK is delivering unmatched utility, power and technology at a very competitive price point in the UK market. 'We fully expect the GWM Poer 300's combination of capability and value to resonate strongly with small business users and rural dwellers, who rely on vehicles such as this as a backbone of their businesses and lifestyles.'

Altice says court approves debt restructuring, no offers for SFR

PARIS, Aug 4 (Reuters) - Altice France said on Monday that its debt restructuring had been approved by Paris' commercial court, which could pave the way for a sale of its French telecoms unit SFR. Markets have speculated that Altice France would offload SFR to cut its debt as higher interest rates and a heavy debt repayment schedule weigh on the privately-held company. In an internal email, reviewed by Reuters, Altice and SFR directors said the restructuring deal would cut Altice's financial debt by more than 9 billion euros ($10.4 billion), reduce financial costs by nearly 400 million euros per year, and postpone upcoming repayment deadlines to between 2028 and 2033. Altice has been in talks for months with creditors to reduce its debt from 24.1 billion euros to 15.5 billion euros, but the agreement needed court approval. The court did not follow a public prosecutor's request to exclude SFR from the restructuring, which could open the way for a sale, although Altice said no offers were on the table at the moment. "No offer, not even an indicative one, has been received to date (for SFR)," the Altice and SFR directors said in their joint email. "If we were to receive one, whatever it may be and wherever it comes from, our responsibility (and that of our shareholders) will be to study it," they added. The Financial Times reported last month that French telecom operators Orange ( opens new tab, Iliad-owned Free and construction-to-telecoms conglomerate Bouygues ( opens new tab were exploring a deal to carve out SFR, opens new tab from Altice. Altice France director Arthur Dreyfuss and SFR director Mathieu Coq also said in their email that as a result of the restructuring, Altice France shareholder Patrick Drahi's stake would fall from 100% to 55%, with the remaining 45% going to the company's creditors.
