PMC intensifies fogging to keep vector-borne diseases at bay

1 2 Patna: In an effort to combat the rising threat of vector-borne diseases, especially in monsoon, Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) is carrying out its intensive anti-larvae and fogging drive across the city. Additional municipal commissioner (AMC) Ashish Kumar on Wednesday — which was also World Mosquito Day — said this is done all throughout the year but from June to Dec fogging is done twice daily in all areas to curb the spread of diseases like dengue, with cases typically spiking from Aug. The city has been systematically divided into six zones, 75 wards and 375 sectors to ensure a thorough coverage. A workforce of over 750 personnel is deployed, governed by a chief sanitary inspector, nodal officers and supervisors at various levels. Assistant medical officer, PMC, Dr Praveen Kumar Singh, said the campaign focuses on two key methods: fogging to eliminate adult mosquitoes and anti-larvae spraying on standing water to kill mosquito larvae at the source, a measure considered more effective. The AMC said the PMC utilised two types of fogging equipment — 75 handheld and 56 tempo-mounted machines, which spray a mixture of malathion and diesel, in 1:19 ratio. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like TV providers are furious: this gadget gives you access to all channels Techno Mag Learn More Undo For anti-larvae operations, a total of 397 teams — 375 from the PMC and 22 from health department —are working to spray a solution of temephos, mixed with water. Each fogging team, composed of two people, is mandated to cover at least 50 houses daily. One member is responsible for maintaining a logbook that includes the names and contact numbers of residents in the areas being treated. Explaining the system, the AMC said first, supervisors make random calls to the residents listed in the logbook to confirm that the work has been carried out as reported. The PMC control room also conducts similar random checks, he said. Ashish Kumar Sinha, Ward 38 (Kadamkuan) councillor, said diseases were on the rise when floodwater used to stagnate for 2-3 days earlier. But now not only does the water drain out within five hours, fogging twice daily and anti-larvae operation once have helped in curbing dengue and other diseases, he said. Monsoon coughs up 22% rise in anti-infective sales in Gujthis July

Ahmedabad: A sharp rise in seasonal infections across Gujarat – from viral fevers and conjunctivitis to upper respiratory tract ailments – coincided with a surge in the demand for anti-infective medicines. According to data from Pharmarack, sales of anti-infectives in the state rose to Rs 99 crore in July 2025, a 22% jump over Rs 81 crore in June. The spike is not a short-term blip. The moving annual total (MAT) for July 2025 pegs the anti-infectives market in Gujarat at Rs 1,141 crore, up 33.76% against Rs 873 crore in July 2023. "The second half of the monsoon typically sees a surge in seasonal ailments such as cough and cold, gastrointestinal infections, respiratory issues, and skin-related infections. This year is no different, with both viral and bacterial fevers on the rise, often accompanied by body ache and fatigue," said Sheetal Sapale, vice-president (commercial), Pharmarack. "These conditions are driving the demand for anti-infective medicines, as they are among the most commonly prescribed therapies during this period. The sales data clearly reflects the medical trend we are observing across Gujarat." by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like California: Gov Will Cover Your Cost To Install Solar If You Live In These Zip Codes SunValue Learn More Undo You Can Also Check: Ahmedabad AQI | Weather in Ahmedabad | Bank Holidays in Ahmedabad | Public Holidays in Ahmedabad | Gold Rates Today in Ahmedabad | Silver Rates Today in Ahmedabad Doctors and medical bodies link the surge to weather conditions and changing infection patterns. "From June to Sep, practitioners generally record a spike in infections. This year, the weather condition played a part where we have seen relatively more days of high temperature and high humidity, something which is conducive for the growth of several microorganisms. From IMA, we want to appeal to all not to take over-the-counter medicines without medical guidance. It will help us in our fight against antimicrobial resistance (AMR)," said Dr Jashwantsinh Darbar, director of the College of General Practitioners of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) Gujarat. Adding to the concern, doctors say both viral and vector-borne infections are showing up in higher numbers this season. "We have recorded cases of dengue and chikungunya, GI-based infections, and viral infections causing influenza-like illnesses (ILI) in the past couple of months. Fever is a common factor, and if it persists for more than two days, one must consult a doctor. While cases are up compared to the past year due to weather conditions, the rise in medicine sales could also be due to over-the-counter purchases," said Dr Dhiren Mehta, president, Ahmedabad Medical Association (AMA). Pharmacists across the state confirm the higher demand for anti-infectives, including antibiotics, antivirals, eye drops, and medicines for throat and chest infections.
