
Major supermarket offers no answers after Aussie mum's rotten grocery find
The mother said she made the order with a north Gold Coast Woolworths on Sunday night before her husband picked it up on Tuesday morning.
She said her husband noticed the 'Woolworths Essentials' frozen chips in her order were warm.
He opened the packet to discover the chips were a 'mashed and mouldy mess'.
'I reported that right away, but later in the night my teenage son went into the kitchen for something to eat and opened the chicken to find it unrecognisable – it was just a stinking black blob,' she told the Courier Mail.
She said the tenders were within the used by date by a year, but her son took them from the bag and showed her the unrecognisable fillets.
She claimed the chicken smelled foul and was covered in green and black mould.
'It was as if someone had fished it out of a bin and put it in our order,' she said.
She said she'd previously had minor click-and-collect order issues, but they had been rectified quickly.
The mother said she reached out to the supermarket online to lodge a complaint.
Woolworths issued a $4 refund for the chips, but the tenders had been mistakenly included in the delivery and were not refunded.
The mother said she wasn't concerned by the refunds, but instead wanted to know how the accident happened.
On Wednesday, a representative apologised for the damage caused by the products.
She offered up a $20 store credit, but could not explain the mix-up.
A Woolworths spokesman said the supermarket was investigating the incident.
'Woolworths is aware of a customer report concerning two items in their recent online order which presented with mould,' they said.
'We take food safety very seriously and have strict food safety management processes.
'Our Customer Hub team are in contact with the customer and have refunded their order.
'While we are actively investigating how this incident has occurred, it appears to be an isolated incident'.

The five kinds of rest – and why they matter for new mothers
We live in a society that champions individualism, productivity and professional and financial success. At every turn we're encouraged to do it all, which can make us worry that if we're not being productive, what is our purpose? Across two years of research, including interviews with more than 60 perinatal health specialists and hundreds of mothers on the Australian Birth Stories podcast, we learned that most mothers enter postpartum with unrealistic expectations of themselves and their bodies. Some are left feeling purposeless and questioning their worth when the work of caring for a baby doesn't fit with the narrative of a results-driven society. And so it's helpful to flip the narrative and consider rest as the most productive thing you can do after birth. While pregnancy is the most ordinary of experiences, it is also absolutely extraordinary; it's the longest, highest-energy expenditure task the human body performs. After that you deserve rest, you need rest and it's important to remember that your body heals when it's resting. In fact, making a full recovery from childbirth is dependent on rest. When you care for yourself in postpartum, you lay the foundation for your long-term health and wellbeing. When it comes to postpartum, especially if you've got older children, rest is only made possible through intention, preparation and support. There's a lot of privilege associated with the opportunity to rest – access to a support network or the funds to pay for one – but it also requires you to value it and prioritise it. Understanding that there are different ways to rest, even when sleep is not something you can count on, can make that easier. This doesn't mean cancelling all plans but rather considering how you feel in social situations and being aware of the effect people have on you. Social rest is choosing to spend time with people who support your intentions and bolster your energy, who fill your soul and make you feel good. Ultimately, you want your social interactions to be positive and meaningful rather than draining and obligatory. This is particularly pertinent in early postpartum when unwanted guests can become a hindrance, tiring you and your baby by overstaying their welcome, which will make you feel depleted and exhausted at an already overwhelming time. The immediate period after birth is a mentally demanding phase of rapid learning. This focus and subsequent exhaustion is exacerbated by birth recovery, fogginess (often referred to as 'baby brain'), sleep deprivation and learning to breastfeed (if you do so). It's imperative to give your brain space to process what you're learning so the lessons have time to sink in. To create this space be mindful of what else you're consuming, especially advice from social media, as information overload can make it hard to be discerning. If you feel as though there are too many thoughts, ideas and questions in your head, write them down in a dot-point list: it helps you to find clarity and empties your head of distractions. Because you're in a physiologically vulnerable and sensitive state, you want to be gentle with your whole self. Any stress, anxiety or concerns will rattle you more than they usually do. Calming music, warm baths, hot tea, cosy clothes and minimal screen time will help you stay grounded. Think of your postpartum bedroom and house as a cocoon; prepare it while you're pregnant and you'll really benefit from its comfort. You'll also benefit from time alone where no one is touching you. Being 'touched out' is a common experience in early motherhood and is particularly relevant if you have older children who can, understandably, need extra touch and reassurance. This may quickly feel sensorially overwhelming, so prioritising breaks – in the shower or bath, in your bedroom with the door closed – goes a long way to creating the physical space you need to feel settled. Beyond the passive physical rest of sleep, active rest such as lying horizontally as much as possible in the first few weeks after birth is a big step towards recovery. This allows your pelvic floor to heal from pregnancy and birth, which is important for your long-term health. Active rest also involves releasing obvious tension in your body. Moving your hips and legs in a way that feels good – yoga, massage – is recommended in postpartum to improve circulation. Likewise, performing gentle stretches of your upper body, neck and shoulders will release the tension you may experience while learning to breastfeed. If you're breastfeeding, it can be really helpful to feed while lying on your side; this prevents your upper body from getting tense and won't place unnecessary pressure on your pelvic floor and perineum. But if you've had a caesarean birth, lying on your side to feed can be painful for the first few weeks, so you may be more comfortable in a supported seated position. Talking to your partner, birth support person or doula/midwife is important. We often have a lot to unpack after birth and it's common to want to share how you felt in labour, the highs and lows of the experience, and how you feel now. This is really healthy: you're letting go of your thoughts, processing them with empathetic listeners and considering how they make you feel. Aussie punk rocker almost goes BLIND after contracting meningitis on the first day of his holiday in Greece
A veteran punk rocker almost went blind after he was struck down with a life-threatening illness on the first day of a long-awaited holiday in Greece. Sydney guitarist and singer Dan Batchelor narrowly escaped going blind after he became 'extremely unwell' after contracting meningitis. Meningitis inflames the protective membranes of the brain and spinal cord and can be caused by a viral, bacterial, fungal, or parasitic infection. Mr Batchelor, who co-founded punk band the Dunhill Blues, contracted the infection just months after he beat cancer and a related auto-immune disease. After making a full recovery, the muso returned to work and started saving up for a trip to Greece to celebrate his wife's birthday in June. But just hours after arriving, Mr Batchelor came down with a severe case of meningitis and had to be rushed to an emergency department in Athens. He flew home to Australia, where he received treatment and returned to work. But weeks later, his vision began to blur and he was rushed to hospital again. Doctors later told Mr Batchelor's wife, Vesna Sulic, that he would have lost his sight completely if they arrived just hours later than they did. One of his eyes suffered permanent damage, as doctors work to prevent total vision impairment as a result of the rare meningitis complication. Ms Sulic said it was 'freaky as hell' watching her husband's eyeballs be injected. 'He is still getting injections every second day,' she wrote on a GoFundMe. 'He is very brave and still has his sense of humour throughout the procedure. 'He is hopeful they can stop the spread of the infection. He is very thankful for all your love and support.' Friends and family have called on the rock and roll community for help. They said Mr Batchelor has exhausted his leave at work and has burnt through his savings paying for medical bills, rent, and other living expenses. 'While this gives Dan time to work on his new blues guitarist name, and rest and recover, of course, the reality is this the latest medical episode has emptied Dan and Ves's emergency fund,' friends wrote on the fundraiser. 'If you've ever had the pleasure of meeting Dan and Ves, or seeing Dan play, or listening to his music: dig deep. 'If "deep" means $5 of your hard-earned coin, we would honestly be so grateful.' Their fundraising efforts have raised $7,556 at the time of writing. The Dunhill Blues have been affectionately described as a 'B-grade garage-punk band'. They have released multiple albums since their debut in the early 2000s.

Just ONE can of your favourite drink ‘raises risk of silent killer by 40%'
KNOCKING back just one of your favourite drinks might be enough to raise your risk of type 2 diabetes by almost 40 per cent, a new study has revealed. Millions of Brits drink sugar-free sweetened drinks under the belief they are healthier because they have zero calories. 1 But Australian scientists at Monash University say it's wrong to think artificial sweeteners in drinks are a totally safe swap for sugar. Their research looked specifically at sweetened soft drinks - both sugar-sweetened and artificially sweetened - and found both types raise the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Artificially sweetened drinks, often marketed as 'diet,' carried the highest risk, with even people at a healthy weight facing a significant chance of developing diabetes from guzzling them. In recent years, natural alternative sweeteners like stevia and monk fruit have become popular, replacing older artificial sweeteners such as aspartame and saccharin. Previous research, published this year in the Journal of Applied Physiology earlier this year linked a common - and natural - sugar substitute called Erythritol (E968) to a higher risk of vascular health issues, including stroke. The new study, published in Diabetes and Metabolism, did not differentiate between the different types of artificial sweeteners used. Scientists followed more than 36,000 Australian adults aged 40–69 for nearly 14 years, monitoring how often they drank sugar-sweetened and artificially sweetened beverages and tracking new cases of type 2 diabetes. They found that artificially sweetened soft drinks raised people's risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 38 per cent. That's higher than the 23 per cent increased risk linked to sugary drinks. Diabetes symptoms and the signs of all types of diabetes Professor Barbora de Courten, one of the study authors, said the findings challenge the common belief that diet drinks are a safer option. 'Artificial sweeteners are often recommended as a healthier choice, but our results suggest they may carry their own health risks,' she explained. Unlike sugary drinks, where the risk can mostly be linked to weight gain, the connection between diet drinks and diabetes remained strong even after adjusting for body weight. This suggests artificially sweetened drinks might directly affect how the body handles sugar. The researchers say these findings should influence public health policies, urging caution around all sweetened drinks - not just sugary ones. 'We support measures like sugary drink taxes, but our study shows we also need to pay attention to artificially sweetened options," Professor de Courten added. "These are often marketed as better for you; yet may carry their own risks. Future policies should take a broader approach to reducing intake of all non-nutritive beverages.' Low or no calorie sweeteners are used instead of sugar to sweeten some foods and drinks. These substances are found in products such as drinks, desserts, ready meals and cakes. The 3 feared risks of artificial sweeteners They could increase risk of heart attack and stroke Research published earlier this year suggests aspartame, a common sugar substitute, may negatively impact vascular health. It was shown to trigger insulin spikes in mice, which can lead to atherosclerosis - plaque buildup in arteries - and increased inflammation. This could potentially raise the risk of heart attack or stroke, researchers suggested. Researchers fed mice daily doses of food containing 0.15 per cent aspartame for 12 weeks - the equivalent of consuming about three cans of diet soda each day for humans Aspartame-fed mice developed larger and more fatty plaques in their arteries compared to mice who weren't given sweeteners. When the research team analysed the mice's blood, they found a "surge" in insulin levels after aspartame entered their system. They said aspartame - which is approximately 200 times sweeter than sugar - seemed to "trick" the receptors into releasing more insulin. The mice's elevated insulin levels appeared to fuel the growth of fatty plaques in their arteries, researchers added. But scientists not involved in the study said you don't need to pour out your diet soda just yet - as we don't yet know whether the artificial sweetener has the same effect on humans. They may increase sugary cravings Some studies link artificial sweeteners to increased appetite and cravings for sugary food. One - published in 2021 - found that sucralose made people feel hungrier. Researcher Professor Kathleen Page said: 'Drinking artificially sweetened drinks may trick the brain into feeling hungry, which may in turn result in more calories being consumed.' However, Gavin Partington, of the British Soft Drinks Association, said the study should be 'treated with caution' because it was based on a 'tiny' number of participants. Other studies suggested that artificial sweeteners can alter people's gut microbiome and cause weight gain. But it should be noted that lots of research supports that sugar substitutes can help with weight loss and maintenance. They may be linked to type 2 diabetes People who regularly consume artificial sweeteners may be more at risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to those with a lower intake, a study published in 2023 showed. The additives may stop the body from being able to regulate blood sugar levels healthily, researchers from Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital suggested. Prior studies have discovered that the sweeteners saccharin and sucralose can increase the blood sugar levels of healthy people. Sweeteners approved for use in the UK include acesulfame K, aspartame, erythritol, saccharin, sorbitol, steviol glycosides, sucralose and xylitol. Some squash drinks contain sweeteners such as sucralose and acesulfame K. Scientific evidence has linked sugar consumption to a range of health conditions including obesity and type 2 diabetes. Therefore, switching to products with sweeteners has been argued to help people who are overweight or obese lose weight. NHS advice says sweeteners are safe and can help keep blood sugars low for diabetics and reduce the risk of tooth decay. Type 2 diabetes affects about 1.3 million people in Australia, and over 4.7 million people in the UK - numbers that continue to rise each year.
