Watch: Kerala woman officer calmly rescues 15-foot King Cobra in viral video
What followed was a six-minute operation that has now caught the internet's attention, not for how dangerous it looked, but for how calmly it was handled.
Cobra found near human activity
The snake was seen on July 6 near a stream in Peppara, located in the Thiruvananthapuram district of Kerala. Concerned by the presence of such a large snake in an area frequented by bathers, residents informed the forest department.
According to media reports, a five-member Rapid Response Team (RRT) was immediately sent to the location to assess and manage the situation.
A first-time rescue of its kind
Among the team was GS Roshni, a forest officer with nearly eight years of field experience. While she had handled hundreds of snake rescues in the past– both venomous and non-venomous, this was the first time she had encountered a King Cobra during an active rescue, news agency PTI reports, as quoted by India Today.
Speaking to PTI, Roshni said that it was her first rescue involving a King Cobra.
She also mentioned that such sightings are uncommon in that particular region, making the encounter a rare one in her career.
Calm and control on full display
In the video of the rescue, Roshni is seen approaching the King Cobra with a hooked pole and a large sack. What caught viewers' attention was not just the methodical approach, but the way she stayed completely composed throughout. At one point, as she guided the snake into the bag, she's even heard saying 'please' – a small but striking moment of calm communication in the middle of a tense rescue.
As per the India Today report, the operation lasted around six minutes.
Despite a few attempts by the snake to evade capture, it was safely secured without harm to either the animal or the team.
Safe release into the forest
The King Cobra, estimated to be between 14 and 15 feet in length and weighing nearly 20 kilograms, was later released into a forest area, far from human settlements, as per the report.
Public reaction and recognition
The video has gone viral on social media, with many praising Roshni for her steady handling of a potentially dangerous situation. Her experience and presence of mind during the rescue have been widely appreciated, especially given that it was her first King Cobra encounter.

Nagasaki cathedral blesses bell that replaces one destroyed by US atomic bomb
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Tokyo, Jul 18 (AP) A Nagasaki cathedral has blessed the final piece to complete its restoration nearly 80 years after being destroyed by the second US atomic bomb dropped on Japan: a reproduction of its lost bell restored by a group of Americans. The new bell was blessed and named 'St Kateri Bell of Hope", by Peter Michiaki Nakamura, archbishop of Nagasaki, at the Urakami Cathedral in a ceremony Thursday attended by more than 100 followers and other participants. The bell is scheduled to be hung inside the cathedral, filling the empty bell tower for the first time, on Aug 9, the anniversary of the bombing. The US bomb that was dropped Aug 9, 1945, fell near the cathedral, killing two priests and 24 followers inside among the more than 70,000 dead in the city. Japan surrendered, ending World War II days later. The bombing of Nagasaki destroyed the cathedral building and the smaller of its two bells. The building was restored earlier, but without the smaller bell. The restoration project was led by James Nolan Jr, who was inspired after hearing about the lost bell when he met a local Catholic follower during his 2023 visit to Nagasaki. Nolan lectured about the atomic bombing in the southern city and its history about Catholic converts who went deep underground during centuries of violent persecution in Japan's feudal era, to raise funds for the bell restoration. 'I think it's beautiful and the bell itself is more beautiful than I ever imagined," Nolan, who was at the blessing ceremony, said after he test-rang the bell. He said he hoped the bell 'will be a symbol of unity and that will bear the fruits of fostering hope and peace in a world where there is division and war and hurt". A sociology professor at Williams College in Massachusetts, Nolan is the grandson of a doctor who was in the Manhattan Project — the secret effort to build the bombs — and who was on a survey team that visited Hiroshima and Nagasaki shortly after the bombings. Nolan, based on materials his grandfather left behind, wrote a book 'Atomic Doctors," about the moral dilemma of medical doctors who took part in the Manhattan Project. States told to strengthen counselling support throughout adoption process
Agency: New Delhi, Jul 17 (PTI) The Central Adoption Resource Authority has asked the state-level adoption agencies to institutionalise counselling services at every stage of the process for all the stakeholders involved. PTI had first reported this development on July 9. In a statement issued on Thursday, the Ministry of Women and Child Development said that it has instructed the state adoption resource agencies to designate or empanel qualified counsellors at both state and district levels. Counselling support will now be mandatory for prospective adoptive parents, adopted children, and biological parents surrendering their children for adoption, it said. In particular, counselling is to be provided to prospective parents during the Home Study Report process, to older children during the transition, and in post-adoption cases like root searches or non-adjustment in families. Biological parents must also be counselled about the finality of their decision and the child's right to know their origins, it said.
