One of the earliest success stories in sports video games came from a company called Jaleco, which produced a wide variety of sports games for the NES, SNES, and beyond. Now, some of its best games are coming back to modern platforms — and you can play them soon.
Newsweek can exclusively reveal that Rock It Games will launch its Jaleco Sports: Goal! double-pack tomorrow, on June 26, 2025.

Rock It Games
Jaleco Sports: Goal! features two games in Jaleco's Goal! series, the first Goal! game for the NES and its sequel, also called Goal! (or Super Goal! in Europe), for the SNES. The title will be released on both Steam and GOG on PC tomorrow, with a PS5 and Nintendo Switch version coming later this summer.
Goal! was lauded upon its release in 1989 as one of the most realistic and advanced soccer games of its time, featuring 16 international teams and 8 US teams and proper tournaments to compete in, as well as an arcade-style Shootout mode. Its SNES sequel was even better, adding a side-scrolling field, 24 international teams, instant replays, strategic options, and much more.
"Jaleco Sports: Goal! is the second in a series of great sports games from the extensive Jaleco Sports catalog," Rock It Games CEO and managing partner Michael Devine said in a press release. "These 8- and 16-bit games, now enhanced with modern features, absolutely deserve their place on today's platforms — so fans can enjoy them for generations to come."
Jaleco Sports: Goal! will feature a host of modern features, such as the option to rewind to take another shot at the goal, a toggle between modern and retro CRT-style display options, and the option to use Remote Play to play together with friends online. It also features all regional variants of both games, as well as digitized game manuals in English, French, Dutch, German, Spanish, and Japanese.
It comes as part of efforts from Rock It Games to resurrect Jaleco's library of classic sports games. Those efforts started with Jaleco Sports: Bases Loaded, which was released earlier this year, and will continue well beyond Goal!, with Rock It Games intending to resurrect the entire library of classic Jaleco sports titles.
Jaleco Sports: Goal! will launch tomorrow on Steam and GOG with a 21% discount — just $10.39. Jaleco Sports: Bases Loaded will also receive the same discount on Steam and GOG to celebrate the new launch, going for just $10.26.

That's the word from "Top Gun: Maverick" and "F1: The Movie" director Joseph Kosinski. The director spoke to GQ while promoting "F1", and said in the coming threequel "Top Gun 3", Maverick will be dealing with an existential crisis. Read More: Tom Cruise Wants to Bring Back His Most Beloved Character "I think we've found a way to do ["Top Gun 3"], not only in the scale of what we're proposing, but the idea itself of the story we're telling," Kosinski said. "We're thinking much bigger than... It's a really existential crisis that Maverick has in this, and it's much bigger than himself." "It actually... I'm trying to describe it without giving anything away," Kosinski continued. "It's an existential question that Maverick has to deal with, that would make Maverick feel small, I think, as a movie, compared to what we're talking about." Skydance Media Kosinski went on to confirm that, while "Top Gun: Maverick" may have felt like it was passing the baton to a new generation, Maverick will remain the central character in "Top Gun 3". "Yeah, there's still more story to tell for him," Kosinski said. "There's one last ride. So we're working on it now. Ehren Kruger, who wrote 'F1', is writing the script. Like all things, it takes a while to work things out, and we'll only do it if we feel like we've got a strong enough story." "Top Gun: Maverick" proved to be a humungous success. The film suffered a number of delays because Cruise refused to have it released straight to streaming during the COVID pandemic. It finally hit theaters in May 2022. Pulling in $1.5 billion at the global box office, the legacy sequel proved to be a massive hit. It made such a dent that Steven Spielberg was quoted saying that Cruise had "saved Hollywood's a**." Pete "Maverick" Mitchell may not be the only legacy character Cruise returns to in the coming years. Back in May, Cruise's frequent collaborator - director Christopher McQuarrie - said they've had discussions about bringing back his "Tropic Thunder" character Les Grossman. "The conversations we've had about Les Grossman are so f---ing funny," McQuarrie said. "We're talking about it, man. We're having very serious conversations about it and how best to do it and where, you know, it ultimately comes down to what that character is." King Charles Hosts Amal, George Clooney Who Once Defended Harry and Meghan
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. George and Amal Clooney were welcomed into Buckingham Palace by King Charles Wednesday, six years after the couple issued a passionate public defense of Meghan Markle. Some royal watchers may associate the Clooneys with high-profile comments George made in February 2019 stating Meghan was being "pursued and vilified and chased" by the media "in the same way that Diana was." They were also among the most famous names at Harry and Meghan's wedding in 2018 and the Sussexes stayed with the Clooneys twice, at Lake Como and their house in Sonning, Berkshire. On Wednesday, the power couple joined makeup entrepreneur Charlotte Tilbury to meet the king, before brushing shoulders with the great and good of the British showbiz scene, in the 10th year of the King's Trust International. The King's Trust also marks its 50th year in 2026. Tilbury told Newsweek: "I feel incredibly honored to be an Ambassador for Enterprise for The King's Trust. He is a global visionary. The king has always been ahead of his time, if you think about what he did with Climate change, what he has done understanding how he can help communities out, how he can empower young people." King Charles III poses for a group photo with George and Amal Clooney, Charlotte Tilbury and other stars as well as winners of the King's Trust Awards 2025 during a reception at Buckingham Palace on June 25, 2025. More Stefan Rousseau-That was all before the royal rift exploded into public consciousness but family drama has not interfered with another key loyalty. Amal Clooney has since 2019 been an ambassador for the King's Trust, one of Charles' most important charities, set up in 1976, when he was in his 20s. The trust has its annual awards Thursday and George and Amal Clooney attended a Buckingham Palace reception Wednesday to celebrate the winners. Actor Joseph Fiennes, star of Shakespeare in Love and The Handmaid's Tale, will be presenting one of the awards at the Royal Festival Hall on Thursday and attended Wednesday's reception. He told Newsweek: "It's vital because in the 25 years I've been doing this you just see the extraordinary collection of young potential that has been picked up having been disenfranchised or not given the right opportunities. "So, I said to His Majesty, maybe it was inappropriate, you are the patron saint of second chances and giving young potential second chances is vital." Newsweek is an official media partner for the Global Sustainability Award, the winner of which got a chance to share a lighthearted moment with King Charles. Pascal Ahaisibwe, 20, from Uganda, told Newsweek: "I recycle plastic bottles. I get different products from plastic that I collect around the towns. And I make products like key holders, sugar bowls, flower vessels. "I have a number of days that I normally go to collect the bottles. I will use one hour to collect the bottles and the other remaining hours to work on them. Mostly I do that during the evening after school time. "Plastic bottles are a big problem in the town where I live. I really enjoyed meeting the king and I was very happy." Jack Royston is chief royal correspondent for Newsweek, based in London.
