A Cruel Love, review: Lucy Boynton's Ruth Ellis is less criminal, more feminist hero
If the case were heard today, she could plead diminished responsibility; the book on which this drama is based, Carol Ann Lee's A Fine Day For a Hanging, argues that she was suffering from PTSD. But this was 1955. A jury found Ellis guilty in under 15 minutes, and she became the last woman in Britain to be hanged.
Then again, should the jury really have found otherwise? Ellis shot Blakely four times. He went down after the first shot, and she fired the other three bullets at close range while he lay helpless on the ground. At her trial, she coolly said: 'It's obvious when I shot him I intended to kill him.'
It's a complicated case, and A Cruel Love reopens the debate over whether or not the verdict was justified. It's a thought-provoking drama powered by a strong central performance from Lucy Boynton, who seems to offer little more than clipped tones and a gimlet glare in the early scenes but comes into her own in the final episode as the minutes tick by until the execution and Ellis tries to suppress her fear. Those last moments are a horror.
The story has been told several times, including in Mike Newell's excellent 1985 film, Dance With a Stranger. The key difference between these two is the role of Desmond Cussen. In the earlier telling (played by Ian Holm) Cussen was an essentially benign figure, hopelessly in love with Ellis and concerned with protecting her. Mark Stanley plays him in the new version as a weasel who gives Ellis the loaded gun and ultimately betrays her.
Toby Jones is here as John Bickford, the doleful solicitor who tries in vain to convince Ellis to reveal Cussen's involvement. He gets the key speech, when he says that Ellis represents everything that the Establishment fears: an ambitious woman with no respect for class or sexual boundaries. In a neat bit of casting, Nigel Havers plays his real-life grandfather, who was the trial judge in the case.
What the drama lacks is chemistry between Ellis and Blakely (Laurie Davidson). In the film, Miranda Richarson and Rupert Everett had it in spades, making it clear why neither party could stay away from this toxic relationship. This Blakely is forgettable, but perhaps that's intentional in a drama that wants to reframe the case with Ellis as the victim.

Good Morning Britain's Richard Madeley branded 'rude' by viewers minutes into ITV show
Good Morning Britain's Richard Madeley branded 'rude' by viewers minutes into ITV show Good Morning Britain viewers were left fuming after Richard Madeley was 'disrespectful' his co-star on the ITV programme Richard Madeley has been criticised for his "disrespectful" behaviour towards one of his Good Morning Britain co-stars during a heated debate. On Wednesday (August 13), Richard and Kate Garraway were at the helm of the ITV programme, joined by newsreader Marverine Cole and journalists Andrew Pierce and Ava Santina-Evans. The panel was discussing new police guidance aimed at curbing the spread of online misinformation. However, viewers were left irate when Richard interrupted Marverine as she was speaking about stereotypes, leading to accusations of rudeness from the host. "People of non-white backgrounds are 'troublemakers' whether they are asylum seekers or not. That was a narrative that never was around when I was younger," Marverine stated. Richard Madeley came under fire for being 'rude' on GMB (Image: ITV) TV presenter Jay Blades to appear in court charged with rape READ MORE: BBC Strictly Come Dancing announce seventh and eighth stars in double announcement READ MORE: As she tried to continue her point, Richard interjected, saying: "But the more you withhold that information, when it is released or when it leaks out, it has much more impact because it is a rarity. "If you actually, completely lift the lid on this and are open every single time somebody is accused, arrested or charged. You're open about who they are, where they're from, you reduce the impact of the rare occasions when it leaks or it leaks inaccurately." Marverine kept her cool despite the disruption, replying: "I appreciate that, but it goes hand in hand with a rhetoric which is across the country now, which is 'It's got to be a black person, it's got to be an asylum seeker who has done this hideous thing. And if it is, we're going to kick off as a nation. If it is a white person, then it is OK'." Richard faced a barrage of criticism on social media from viewers, with numerous people branding him disrespectful towards Marverine during the ITV broadcast, reports the Mirror. "#gmb wish Madeley would stop talking over Marverine, so rude!" one ITV viewer raged. Marverine Cole on GMB (Image: ITV) Another person wrote: "#gmb Richard Madeley shut up let people talk!!!!" A third commented: "Quite eye opening the way ignoramus Richard Madeley was talking over Marverine Cole trying to get a point across." Emmerdale favourite 'to get the blame' for Vinny attack in ITVX release
The following article contains spoilers from an episode of Emmerdale that hasn't aired on ITV1 yet, but can be viewed on ITVX. Vinny Dingle (Bradley Johnson) has told a huge lie to Gabby Thomas (Rosie Bentham) in the aftermath of his attack in Emmerdale. Yesterday, Vinny invited Mike over, the man he met on an LGBTQI+ forum. The two men had met up a couple of times prior to this, and Vinny believed they were connecting over thoughts regarding sexuality. Unfortunately, it was all a lie, as Vinny discovered yesterday that Mike was after one thing and one thing only – money. Mike accused Vinny of inviting him over just to try and sleep with him. Vinny denied this, but it was this moment where he started to realise that the man he had told some incredibly private secrets to was someone entirely different. He tried to run out of the house but Mike grabbed Vinny and brutally attacked him. The violence was so intense, Vinny was reminded of the times his biological father Paul would beat him. In tonight's episode, Gabby Thomas (Rosie Bentham) arrived home after spending the night away from the village. It meant that Vinny had the chance to tidy the house up and hide his injuries, and she was completely none the wiser. While he was hiding his bruises, Vinny still needed to create a cover story in case Gabby spotted them, and it involved targeting a perfectly innocent Kammy Hadiq (Shebz Miah). Outside, Vinny approached Kammy and started to goad him, hoping that he would be pushed to throw a few punches. Kammy was never going to attack his best mate but when Vinny tried to hit him, he had no choice but to push him away. This, and the shouting that was happening between them, sparked Gabby to run towards them both and pull Vinny away. Poor Kammy was so confused, even more so when Vinny told blatant lies about what he had said. A while later, Kammy visited Vinny, desperate to know what on earth was going on. Kammy told his friend that if he isn't honest with himself, everything will end in tears. Reluctant to do this, Vinny got Kammy to leave. Just before the episode ended, Vinny was seen getting the Hotten Police Station website up on his phone. He couldn't bring himself to contact them, but whether he thought about putting the blame on Kammy for the break-in and attack, or whether he almost reported Mike remains to be seen. Is Vinny capable of going this far and framing Kammy for this? All to hide this secret? Vinny has felt confused about his sexuality ever since he tried to kiss Kammy. Shortly after it happened, Vinny claimed it was a joke and reminded Kammy that he's currently engaged to Gabby. More Trending In the days that followed, Kammy tried to talk to Vinny about the moment and how it made him feel, but he pushed his mate away. Vinny made contact with Mike after a conversation with Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt), who volunteers for a mental health charity. Paddy spoke about how valuable the charities are, and how they help people feel less alone. Vinny took to the internet and found a forum. He made contact with Mike and spoke to him about a variety of things. It was the first time Vinny has genuinely and comfortably discussed that he might not be straight, but bravely doing this has caused a massive fallout, as he opened up to a man who simply did not care what he had to say. Lorraine Kelly 'leaving' ITV amid broadcaster's brutal job cuts
Lorraine Kelly 'leaving' ITV amid broadcaster's brutal job cuts Lorraine Kelly is reportedly set to leave ITV when her contract ends next year Lorraine Kelly is reportedly preparing to quit ITV when her current deal concludes next year, according to insiders. The 65-year-old broadcaster was said to be furious earlier this year after ITV revealed that her programme would be slashed to just 30 weeks in 2026, down from the standard 52-week run. From January onwards, her show will also face a cut in duration, broadcasting from 9.30am to 10am only - 30 minutes shorter than her current hour-long show. It's now being reported that the Scottish television personality has decided to sever ties with the broadcaster when her current contract expires next year. Wales Online has contacted representatives of Lorraine and ITV for comment. A consultation process is presently underway to determine who will face the impact of ITV's stringent budget reductions, reports the Daily Star. Lorraine Kelly's ITV show has faced many cuts this year (Image: ITV) A source revealed to the Mail Online: "Lorraine sees it as the end. She's got a year left on her contract, which she will honour, but beyond that there are no plans for her to stay. She will be leaving. "Of course, she will be fine, she has loads of money. But some of the people who work for her have done so for many years and have put up with her demands for a long, long time. Yet they will struggle to ever get another job in the television industry." Although her role appears secure, Lorraine is thought to be ready to step away from presenting duties after 15 years leading her programme. This restructuring might also affect Lorraine's well-liked replacement hosts Christine Lampard and Ranvir Singh, whose opportunities to present the show could be significantly diminished. Lorraine has been hosting her show for 15 years (Image: ITV) The news comes after Lorraine, who hails from Glasgow, celebrated four decades in television with a special edition of her morning programme, which broadcasts after Good Morning Britain on ITV1 and ITVX. The veteran broadcaster recently signed a new, short-term contract that will see him continue to front the show for at least another six months. Lorraine airs weekdays on ITV1 at 9am
