Woman climbs famous UK mountain but is floored by what she finds at top

Daily Mirror24-06-2025
A woman who woke up at 1.45am to climb Pen y Fan, in the Brecon Beacons, was left shocked when she reached the top of the mountain - and it wasn't because of the early start
There's no adventure quite like a Welsh mountain hike and, when the elements align with some precious alone time, it's an opportunity to discover the natural treasures Wales has to offer. Yet, one woman's recent ascent of Pen y Fan, in the Brecon Beacons, left her utterly flabbergasted.
Emily White took to TikTok to recount her early morning trek, revealing she had set off at the ungodly hour of 1.45am, all in the hopes of catching a breathtaking sunrise from the peak. After fuelling up with breakfast, and making her way to Pen y Fan by 4.20am, her optimism was high but, by 5am, the outlook was grim.

An hour shy of reaching the summit, Emily's anticipation turned to disappointment as she encountered not the stunning views she envisioned, but a blanket of thick fog.

She coined the term "sunrise fail" for her misadventure, yet managed to find humour in the anticlimactic end to her early rise, because sometimes laughter is the only response to such a misty letdown.
The video suggests she wasn't alone in her mistimed journey; other hikers loomed in the foggy backdrop. On her ascent, the weather seemed promising, with clear skies and even local wildlife, including ponies and sheep, making an appearance on camera.
Alas, the summit offered a stark contrast to her expectations. It seems that the majestic views of Pen y Fan were not meant for Emily that day.
Despite your best efforts to plan a perfect hike, sometimes the weather simply refuses to cooperate. It's a bit of a downer, but that's just how it goes sometimes.
For those unfamiliar with Pen y Fan, it holds the title of the tallest peak in South Wales. Nestled within the Brecon Beacons National Park, this mountain towers at 886 metres (2,907 ft) above sea level, making it the highest British peak south of Cadair Idris in Snowdonia.

The National Trust owns both the mountain and its surrounding area, and is actively working to combat the erosion caused by the footfall of countless walkers. The mountain also serves as a training ground for the UK's Special Forces personnel during their selection process.
Visit Wales describes Pen y Fan as one of Wales' most frequented walks, stating: "Pen y Fan is one of the most popular walks in Wales. When the weather is fine, the views are truly splendid.
"Mile upon mile of rolling hills disappear into the distance, fringed by eons-old sheer cliffs. Just like Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon), its popularity can detract from the experience, as trails get very busy at peak times.

"If you're visiting in mid-summer you might want to try the nearby Black Mountains or the Cambrian Mountains - particularly if you like to walk without lots of other people around.
"To get to Pen y Fan you can walk along the Beacons Way or the Taff Trail. If you prefer to cycle, you can take National Cycle Network Route 8 or the Taff Trail."
For those intending to use public transport, you can catch a train to either Merthyr Tydfil or Abergavenny station, and then board the X43 bus. Alternatively, you could take the T4 bus from Cardiff to Newtown, alighting at the Storey Arms.
If you're driving, take the A470 road that links Llandudno in North Wales with Cardiff in South Wales. This route goes straight through Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) National Park in Mid Wales, providing a scenic journey alongside the mountain.

Woman sparks debate after slamming stranger who refused to watch her bag in the airport

A debate over airport etiquette has once again taken flight, after a woman lashed out at a fellow passenger unwilling to watch her belongings while she used the bathroom. Cara O'Bannon, 25, was waiting to board her flight to Jackson Hole, Wyoming, from Tampa International Airport in Florida when she needed to use the restroom. Not wanting to take her carry-on suitcase and purse into the bathroom, Cara asked a woman also sitting near her gate if she could watch her belongings. However, she was shocked when the stranger refused. 'I fully expected her to say "yes,"' the traveler admitted in a now-viral video shared to TikTok. 'And she goes... "No, you should honestly take it with you."' Cara said the bathroom was only a 'few steps away' and could be seen from the gate. 'I can see from here, a few steps away from where we're sitting. I've never been so caught off guard,' she continued. 'So I fully thought she was going to be like, "Yeah, that's fine. Go ahead and go." Like, our plane's about to board,' the bamboozled woman continued. 'She fully said, "No,"' Cara said in disbelief. Despite saying it was 'fine' that the woman didn't want to watch her belongings, she hit out at the stranger for not being more helpful. 'You don't have to watch it, but I'm not going to take all my belongings a few steps away when you're already sitting here, and you could just watch it,' Cara said indignantly. While Cara found the woman's actions odd, TikTok viewers flooded her comments assuring her that it was actually a normal reaction. 'This is like the first rule of the airport. Don't leave unattended luggage ever. Don't watch other's luggage. This is common sense I fear,' one user shared. 'I had two kids, a stroller, and two heavy packed full backpacks and didn't even think of asking someone to watch my stuff,' wrote another. Someone else shared a cautionary tale, stating: 'I asked someone to watch my stuff and when I left she reported it abandoned and the agents took my bag… lesson learned.' 'There's actually a loud announcement in the airport typically that tells you not to leave your bag anywhere and to report any bag that is left unattended...' pointed out a different person. In general, it's not advised to look after or travel with stranger's bags or luggage you have not packed yourself. AAA Club Alliance noted in their travel guidance section to beware of 'luggage scams.' 'Fraudsters may distract you to steal or plant items in your bag, or they may offer to carry your luggage, only to disappear with it,' it wrote. In a 2018 response on X, formerly known as Twitter, Ask TSA answered someone who asked if you should watch a stranger's luggage at the airport if they ask - saying no. 'Passengers should maintain control over their own items and property at all times,' the organization wrote. 'Please report these concerns to local law enforcements.' Cara's video comes after the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) issued an urgent warning to US travelers over a new scam targeting people in a rush to get through airport security. The new trick is designed to steal sensitive information and money from helpless travelers. The TSA took to Facebook earlier this summer warning people who are signing up for its PreCheck service. 'Signing up for TSA PreCheck? Make sure you're using a safe and trusted .gov website,' the post read. It also included the official link. The Federal Trade Commission further explained the potential scam on its website. 'No one likes waiting in airport security lines. To speed things up, some people opt to get TSA PreCheck,' the website reads. 'Scammers know this and send emails that look like they're from TSA PreCheck — but they're not. 'The emails want you to click a link that takes you to a scam website that only looks like the official site - but it's not.' The FTC continued: 'If you pay to "enroll" or "renew" your TSA PreCheck, you may not even realize you've paid a scammer until you get to the airport for your next trip.'
