‘Sanghi-saathi' should thank British on completing 100 yrs: Akhilesh

Hans Indiaa day ago
Lucknow: Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Friday took a veiled dig at the RSS after it was lauded by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day speech, saying it should thank the British on completion of its 100 years as some organisations were made by them so that the country could be divided on religious lines. Speaking to reporters at the Janeshwar Mishra Park in Lucknow after hoisting the tricolour, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister also questioned the prime minister's 'swadeshi' pitch, saying those who are swadeshi only by speech should become swadeshi in mind.
He hit out at the ruling BJP, saying it should not tell lies and no politics should be done on this day.
'This group of Sanghi saathis... I want to remind them that when the BJP was formed and the person who became the first national president of the BJP, in its first session, it was decided that the political ideology of the party would be socialist and secular.
'And, on this completion of 100 years, they should congratulate the British. Because we have heard and some historians have also written that some organisations were made by the British so that 'Bharat' could be divided on religious lines, a gulf could be created between Hindus and Muslims.
'Hence, the Sanghi saathis, whose first ideology is socialist and secular, they should remember it, so that the country can move forward,' Yadav said.
Prime Minister Modi on Friday hailed 100 years of RSS as a 'very proud and glorious' journey of the 'world's biggest NGO' and lauded all its volunteers for their dedicated service to the nation.
The prime minister also made a sweeping call for 'swadeshi' (Made in India) -- self-reliance and innovation in a gamut of sectors, including semiconductors, social media, fertiliser and pharma. 'Those who are swadeshi only by speech should become swadeshi from mind as well,' Yadav said, while raising issues like US tariffs and GST.
'The BJP people should not be speaking lies on August 15 (Independence Day), a day which is celebrated with joy. No politics should be done during this,' the SP chief said.
'Our borders should be secured, our Army should be strong, and schemes like Agniveer should be stopped. And, we also see those people, who appear to be 'swadeshi' from speech, but are 'videshi' (foreigners) from the mind ('aur hum unn logo ko bhi dekhte hai jo mooh se to swadeshi hai, lekin mann se videshi hai').
'If someone is a foreigner in mind, then how will our business increase? Today, a country like the US is posing a problem for our industrialists by imposing tariffs,' Yadav said.
He said a district like Bhadohi used to do trade worth thousands of crores of rupees but now its business has shrunk significantly.
'And, there is China -- our neighbour, which occupies our land from time to time, has captured our entire market. Today, we have the highest trade deficit with China. Hence, those who are swadeshi only by speech should become swadeshi from mind as well,' Yadav said.
India has recorded trade surplus with as many as 151 countries such as the US and the Netherlands, while the country has a trade deficit with 75 nations, including China and Russia, during the first half of this year, according to think tank GTRI (Global Trade Research Initiative).
Yadav also said that the 'web of GST and fear-inducing ('daraane waalee) institutions such as ED, CBI and Income Tax, will not allow our trade to increase, but will lead to closure'.
Referring to the dropping of the atom bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the SP chief said, 'After the dropping of bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II, the results which were visible, the world accepted that it will never go into an atomic war. We will not use atomic energy to take someone's life.

GST reforms to bring double bonus for Diwali: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday that the country's citizens will receive a double bonus during Diwali this year through the next generation GST reform that is being planned to bring down the prices of goods and services to benefit the poor and middle class. In his address at the inauguration of two major highway projects in Delhi, the Prime Minister said: 'For us, reform means the expansion of good governance, and continuous focus is being placed on reforms.' He announced that in the coming days, several major reforms will be introduced to make both life and business easier. 'As part of this effort, a next-generation reform in GST is being planned. This Diwali, citizens will receive a double bonus through the GST reform," PM Modi remarked. He said that the complete framework has been shared with all states, and expressed hope that all states will cooperate with this initiative of the government of India. The Prime Minister urged for the swift completion of the process so that 'this Diwali can be made even more special". Adding that the government aims to simplify GST further and revise tax rates, the Prime Minister highlighted that the benefits of this reform will reach every household, especially the poor and middle class. The entrepreneurs of all scales, as well as traders and businesspersons, will gain from these changes. Meanwhile, the Finance Ministry on Friday sent its proposal to the GST Council for introducing two GST rates of 5 per cent and 18 per cent across all goods going forward, according to government sources. The proposed two-slab regime will replace the current four slabs in the goods and services tax (GST) regime, doing away with the 12 per cent and 28 per cent slabs. Items that will be covered under the lower GST rate of 5 per cent will include, essential goods consumed by the common man, health-related items, handicrafts and insurance. While the other goods including manufactured products such as refrigerators and TVs will come under the 18 per cent slab. However, sin and luxury goods such as cigarettes, tobacco, sugary drinks and pan masala will continue to be under a separate GST tax bracket of 40 per cent The government is of the view that this rationalisation of GST will give a big boost to consumption and spur growth in the economy. The GST Council, which includes finance ministers of states, is likely to meet in September to approve the proposal The proposal came after Prime Minister Narendra Modi said during his Independence Day address from the Red Fort that the next generation reforms in GST will be unveiled by Diwali, which will provide "substantial" tax relief to the common man and benefit small businesses. Key areas identified for next-generation reforms include the rationalisation of tax rates to benefit all sections of society, especially the common man, women, students, middle class, and farmers. Among the proposals is the reduction of taxes on items used by the common man and aspirational goods. This would enhance affordability, boost consumption, and make essential and aspirational goods more accessible to a wider population. The end of compensation cess has created fiscal space, providing greater flexibility to rationalise and align tax rates within the GST framework for long-term sustainability, according to the ministry. The correction of inverted duty structures is aimed at aligning input and output tax rates so that there is a reduction in the accumulation of input tax credit. This would support domestic value addition.

Days after SP expulsion for praising CM Yogi Adityanath, Chail MLA Pooja Pal calls on him

LUCKNOW: Chail MLA Pooja Pal, who was recently expelled by Samajwadi Party for anti-party activities, called on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at his official residence in Lucknow. Both the office of the chief minister and the MLA posted about the meeting on micro-blogging site X on Saturday night. "Honourable MLA of Chail assembly constituency of Kaushambi district, Pooja Pal, made a courtesy visit to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in Lucknow today," the office of Yogi Adityanath said in a post in Hindi. Sharing a photograph of the meeting, Pal said in a post in Hindi, "I once again thank the honourable chief minister. Under his leadership, goons and mafias are shown their rightful place, which is very important for a progressive society." In another X post on Sunday, Pal said, "There are some people who always comment on my personal life and keep writing about it. I have no problem if they write, but they should write the truth, because I contested the election from their party, their leader knows everything..." "They knew I lost the election in 2017. Taking this as an opportunity, some leaders -- Atiq Ahmed (gangster-turned-politician who was shot dead in 2023) and my maternal relatives who wanted to contest the MLA election -- started working to end my political career. I was unable to fight Raju Pal's (her husband) case. A conspiracy was hatched against me by Atiq Ahmed, in which my own family members were involved," she wrote in the long post. She further wrote that after Atiq was murdered, her brothers took up her case. "They told me to get married, that they are with me. But a few days after the marriage, I came to know the truth. These same people were sitting somewhere and talking that now the case against Atiq will be closed. But I will not back off." Pal also mentioned that she has applied for divorce. "Now when I spoke the truth in the assembly, despite knowing everything, out of irritation and revenge, they hatched a conspiracy to tarnish my image and kept writing about my personal life," she said. "Even today, the trust and love of the people remain with me. The people of my city (Prayagraj) West and Chail know everything about my sorrows. That is why their support is still with me. Out of fear of this, some 'samajwadis' are using kinds of tricks to tarnish my image," she added. Pooja Pal was expelled from the Samajwadi Party on Thursday, just hours after she praised Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in the Assembly for "reducing to dust" gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed, who was accused of murdering her husband Raju Pal in 2005. During the 24-hour special discussion on 'Vision 2047' during the ongoing monsoon session of the Assembly, Pal had said that the present government's anti-crime policies had brought her husband's killers to the ground. "The chief minister has done the work of reducing my husband's murderer Atiq Ahmed into dust. He saw my hidden tears, which no one saw for years," she told the House. Pooja Pal's husband Raju Pal, a former BSP MLA From Prayagraj West, was shot dead nine days after their wedding in January 2005, in an attack linked to Atiq Ahmed. Ahmed, a former MP and multiple-time MLA from Allahabad West, was serving a life sentence when he and his brother Ashraf were shot dead at point-blank range by three assailants while they were being escorted by police for a medical check-up in Prayagraj on April 15, 2023. The killing took place in full view of the media and was broadcast live.

PM Modi once again praises leadership of Haryana CM Saini

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday once again praised the leadership of Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, saying under his leadership, government jobs are being provided to the youth purely on the basis of merit and with complete transparency. The Prime Minister was addressing a programme in New Delhi on the occasion of the inauguration of the Dwarka Expressway and UER-II National Highway projects connecting Delhi and Haryana at a cost of about Rs 11,000 crore. He said there was a time when Congress governments ruled Haryana, and during that period, it was almost impossible for the youth to secure government appointments without 'parchi and kharchi'. However, the BJP government has completely transformed this system. The Prime Minister said the BJP government has so far provided government jobs to lakhs of youth in Haryana on the basis of merit and transparency, and that Chief Minister Saini is carrying this tradition forward with commitment. He said the constant endeavour of the government is to simplify people's lives, which is clearly reflected in its policies and decisions. Expressing gratitude to the Prime Minister, CM Saini said the Prime Minister's guidance and encouragement serve as the biggest strength for the state government. He said providing transparent and merit-based opportunities to the youth is the government's top priority, and Haryana is setting a new benchmark in this direction across the country. The Chief Minister expressed confidence that with the blessings of the Prime Minister, Haryana will continue to move swiftly on the path of development and good governance. Prime Minister Modi inaugurated and dedicated to the people two major development projects worth Rs 2,000 crore that will directly benefit Haryana. These projects include the construction of two four-lane connectivity roads to Sonipat and Bahadurgarh under the Urban Extension Road-II project. The Chief Minister said Haryana, being the industrial and agricultural hub of north India, would be the biggest beneficiary of these projects. He said these key projects will not only boost exports, imports and investments by ensuring direct connectivity from Kundli, Sonipat, Bahadurgarh, Gurugram and Manesar to Delhi Airport, but will also provide long-awaited relief from traffic congestion in the region.
