Trump says Coke agrees to use cane sugar in US
"I have been speaking to Coca-Cola about using REAL Cane Sugar in Coke in the United States, and they have agreed to do so," Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform. "I'd like to thank all of those in authority at Coca-Cola. This will be a very good move by them — You'll see. It's just better!"
In a brief statement on its website, Coca-Cola said: "We appreciate President Trump's enthusiasm for our iconic Coca‑Cola brand. More details on new innovative offerings within our Coca‑Cola product range will be shared soon."
High-fructose corn syrup has been Coca-Cola's primary sweetener in U.S. products since 1985. The company currently uses cane sugar in products sold in several other markets, including Mexico, the United Kingdom, Africa and the Middle East. The company also sells a limited amount of Coke in the U.S. made with sugar as a kosher option for Passover -- distinguished by its yellow caps, instead of red.
A noted Diet Coke enthusiast, Trump's relationship with the beverage giant has been well-documented.
Ahead of the inauguration for his second term, Trump received a special Presidential Commemorative Inaugural Diet Coke bottle from Coca-Cola Company Chairman and CEO James Quincey.
Why the change?
Trump didn't specify a reason for the change. However, the announcement comes as Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s "Make America Healthy Again" initiative gains traction, which advocates for removing HFCS from American food products. The initiative cites research linking HFCS to various health issues that contributes to obesity and chronic illness.
However, studies are mixed on whether cane sugar is healthier than HFCS, with research suggesting that any added sugars, regardless of what type, increase the risk of Type 2 diabetes and other diseases. Dietitians recommend limiting added sugars of all varieties to less than 50 grams per day for most adults. One 12-ounce can of Coke has roughly 39 grams of sugar.
Coke's switch from sugar to corn syrup
Coca-Cola's 1985 transition to high-fructose corn syrup in the United States was primarily a business decision, the company said. The change coincided with rising sugar prices and agricultural policies that made corn syrup a more economical alternative.

NFL smelling salts ban: NFLPA provides key updates on policy
The NFL announced Tuesday its teams would be prohibited from distributing smelling salts to its players during the league's 2025 season. However, the league did not actually ban the products from being used, as the NFLPA clarified Wednesday. "We were not notified of this club policy change before the memo was sent out," the NFLPA wrote in a message to its players, per ESPN. "To clarify, this policy does not prohibit player use of these substances, but rather it restricts clubs from providing or supplying them in any form. The NFL has confirmed this to us." The confusion stemmed from the NFL's initial memo to players, which explained why NFL clubs would no longer be permitted to distribute smelling salts to its players. "In 2024, the FDA issued a warning to companies that produce commercially available ammonia inhalants (AIs), as well as to consumers about the purchase and use of AIs, regarding the lack of evidence supporting the safety or efficacy of AIs marketed for improving mental alertness or boosting energy. The FDA noted potential negative effects from AI use. AIs also have the potential to mask certain neurologic signs and symptoms, including some potential signs of concussion. As a result, the NFL Head, Neck, and Spine Committee recommended prohibiting the use of AIs for any purpose during play in the NFL. "In light of this information, effective for the 2025 NFL season, clubs are prohibited from providing or supplying ammonia in any form at NFL games. For clarity, 'ammonia' refers to ammonia capsules, inhalers, ammonia in a cup, and any form of 'smelling salts.' This prohibition applies to all club personnel (including but not limited to team physicians, athletic trainers, strength and conditioning coaches and coaches or other personnel). The prohibition applies through the entirety of all NFL games, including during all pregame activities, and halftime, and applies on the sideline and in stadium locker rooms." Several NFL players took the memo to mean the use of smelling salts had been banned outright. That upset many, including San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle, who said he was "distraught all day" after reading the memo. "I'm an every drive guy," Kittle said of his use of smelling salts in an appearance on NFL Network. "I considered retirement. We got to figure out a middle ground here guys. Somebody help me out, somebody come up with a good idea… I miss those already." After the NFLPA's clarification, Kittle no longer has to worry about negotiating a middle ground. He will, however, have to provide his own stash of smelling salts if he wants to continue using them in 2025. How California missed its chance to protect solar funding from Trump
With no official EPA announcement on the Solar for All funding out yet, the CPUC is taking a diplomatic stance. 'The CPUC is actively implementing Solar for All under a stakeholder-driven, EPA-approved workplan,' said agency spokesperson Terrie Prosper. California has about 217 megawatts of capacity of community solar installed or in the pipeline — far less than leading states like Florida (3,873 MW) or New York (2,110 MW). And while other states also haven't spent all their Solar for All awards, some are much further along than California. Illinois, for example, has spent $11 million of its $156 million, according to U.S. spending data analyzed by the firm Atlas Public Policy. California has spent $100,641, according to Atlas' figures. 'California, rather than being a leader in this clean energy aspect, has been a laggard,' said Derek Chernow, western regional director of the Coalition for Community Solar Access, a group of solar developers. California officials have defended the state against other federal provocations on renewable energy, including by suing over lost EV charging funding, proposing a plan to replace lost EV tax credits with state dollars, and weighing fast-tracked permits for renewable energy projects cut off from federal incentives. It's unclear whether the state wants to go to bat for community solar. Asked whether California would sue once the Trump administration terminates the grants, a spokesperson for Attorney General Rob Bonta said the office does not comment on legal strategy. But the episode illustrates how California's window of opportunity is narrowing to get renewable energy projects reliant on federal funding off the ground before the Trump administration quashes them. A bill sponsored by the community solar industry that would have had CPUC redo the tariff and speed up the program failed in the Assembly Appropriations Committee in May. Assemblymember Chris Ward, the author of AB 1260, said he hopes to bring it back next year. 'I've always said that a successful program shouldn't rely on one-time federal funding to survive,' Ward said in a statement. Like this content?
