Diocese of Belgaum condemns arrests of Kerala nuns in Chhattisgarh
'We strongly condemn the arrests of two Catholic nuns by the Chhattisgarh Police. But we urge Christians and others in civil society to pray for the arrested nuns and the youth while raising their voices against the arrests,' Bishop of Diocese of Belgaum Reverend Derek Fernandes said in Belagavi on Wednesday.
Two Catholic nuns from Kerala, Sister Preeti Mary and Sister Vandana Francis, belonging to the Congregation of the Assisi Sisters of Mary Immaculate, along with a youth named Sukaman Mandavi, were arrested at Durg Railway Station in Chhattisgarh on the charge of trafficking in human beings and making an attempt to convert girls.
'The Sisters of this Congregation used to work in our Diocese in Bagalkot earlier. We are indebted to the amount of service these sisters have rendered to the people of Bagalkot irrespective of caste or religion. While this has sparked widespread controversy and protests, joining Christians from across the nation, devotees of the Diocese of Belagavi condemn the action meted out to the innocent nuns and the youth in the strongest of terms,' Bishop Fernandes said.
'While we raise our voices against this and pray intensely that better sense may prevail and the arrested find relief, it is to be noted that in the recent times there has been a surge of such incidents and it is high time that we raise our voices against such incidents,' Bishop Fernandes said.

After reviewing the evidence and arguments, the NIA court found grounds to grant conditional bail. The granting of bail indicates that the court did not find sufficient prima facie evidence to justify their continued incarceration for terror-related offences or recognised the potential for undue hardship due to the nature of the accusations. Conditional bail was granted to three people in the case, defence lawyer Amrito Das confirmed, according to a report by PTI. Cong, UDF will back nuns' legal battle, says Satheesan
T'puram/Kottayam/Kannur: Congress and UDF will support the legal battles of the Keralite nuns arrested in Chhattisgarh until the FIR against them is quashed, said opposition leader V D Satheesan on Saturday. "For the past nine days, two nuns were in jail for a crime they didn't commit. Those spreading religious hatred are attacking minorities. Govt lawyers in Chhattisgarh argued against granting bail to the nuns. Bajrang Dal lawyers also argued against granting bail, treating the nuns like criminals who committed murder. BJP national and state leadership supported this," said Satheesan. "This is the 834th attack against Christians in the last 365 days. The significance of this incident is that it exposed BJP's true face. The nuns were arrested on false charges of religious conversion and human trafficking. In BJP-ruled states, nuns and clergy in religious attire cannot travel freely. This is the same administration that shackled and killed the venerable Stan Swamy in jail. It was a violation of the constitutional protections guaranteed to them," he alleged. "MLAs Roji M John and Sajeev Joseph, who led the legal efforts, succeeded in securing bail. Support will be given to all legal battles until the FIR is quashed," he added. "Kerala's secular spirit was united in wishing for bail for the nuns. BJP is trying to bring divisive politics into such a society. Congress and UDF will fight this with all their might," said Satheesan. Quash case against nuns, Venugopal to C'garh govt BJP state unit leaders thought they could earn votes in elections by playing a political drama to create an impression that they intervened after Keralite nuns were arrested in Chhattisgarh, alleged AICC general secretary K C Venugopal on Saturday. "That is just a dream. The Sangh Parivar mind is full of hatred and revenge. The nuns were portrayed wrongly as part of that and they came up with the accusation of religious conversion. BJP can't hoist the flag of love. There is no love and sincerity in them," he said. Venugopal was speaking to the media after visiting the headquarters of Assisi Sisters of Mary Immaculate, the congregation to which the two arrested nuns belonged, at Cherthala in Alappuzha. He urged Chhattisgarh govt to show the willingness to quash the case against the nuns. "Why is Chhattisgarh govt reluctant to quash the fake case against the nuns? Govt wishes to prolong the trials against them," he said. Venugopal urged Centre and Union home department to demand of Chhattisgarh chief minister to quash the case against the nuns. "Strict action should be taken against those who illegally detained them," he added. Govt has no role in bail, says KPCC prez KPCC president Sunny Joseph on Saturday welcomed the bail granted to the nuns. However, he said neither central govt nor state govt have any role in the grant of bail to the nuns. "It is the court's discretionary power for granting bail. Those who claim that the bail was granted due to their generosity, should also be ready to take the responsibility of their arrest," he added. Joseph alleged that the nuns were arrested in a fabricated case. "Bajrang Dal activists threatened and manhandled the nuns and the women who were with them at the time in search of a job. Religious body condemns attack, arrest of nuns in Chhattisgarh
Panaji: The Conference of Religious India (CRI), Goa, has strongly condemned the attack and arrest of Catholic nuns Sr Preethi Mary and Sr Vandana Francis, in Chhattisgarh. In a press release issued through the Archdiocese of Goa's diocesan centre for social communications media, the CRI stated that it is deeply pained by the baseless allegations levelled against these two dedicated nuns, who devoted their lives to uplifting the marginalised through education, healthcare, and faith. 'Acts of this nature are affronts to the very foundations of justice, humanity, and religious freedom enshrined in our Constitution,' the Goa CRI unit stated. 'While we are relieved that bail was granted and our sisters are no longer detained, we remain concerned about the injustice meted out to them and the distress caused. The suffering faced by Sr Preethi Mary and Sr Vandana Francis is a painful reminder of the challenges that those who serve selflessly may endure,' the Goa unit stated. 'The religious of Goa unite to decry these shameful actions, which threaten not only the harmony and peace of our society but also the sanctity of selfless service. At this hour, we continue to stand in total solidarity with our sisters and all who work for justice and compassion,' the unit stated. President of the CRI Goa unit, Sr Flory Rodrigues, called upon the faithful to offer prayers for the sisters' continued safety, vindication, and restoration of justice and peace.
