Amazon puts Rs 350 crore in Amazon Pay India amid rising competition in fintech

Time of India25-04-2025
E-commerce
giant Amazon has infused Rs 350 crore into its
fintech
arm,
Amazon Pay India
, as it seeks to bolster its presence in the country's competitive
digital payments
space dominated by
PhonePe
and
Google Pay
.
The move comes as rival Flipkart's fintech platform, Super.money, is reportedly in talks to raise $35–40 million in a new funding round, potentially bringing in external investors for the first time.
Regulatory filings with the Registrar of Companies (RoC) reveal that Amazon Pay India allotted 3.5 crore equity shares to its parent entity,
Amazon Corporate Holdings
Private Limited, through a rights issue. This latest capital infusion follows earlier investments of Rs 300 crore in November 2024 and Rs 600 crore in June 2024, according to an ET report.
Despite Amazon's continued investments, Amazon Pay's position in the UPI ecosystem has weakened. According to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the platform ranked eighth in
UPI transaction volume
as of March 2025 — down from sixth place a year earlier.
It now trails behind PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm, Navi, Super.money, Axis Bank, and Cred.
NPCI data also shows that PhonePe and Google Pay together command roughly 85 per cent of the UPI transaction volume, while Amazon Pay holds a modest 0.6 per cent market share.
In February 2024, Amazon Pay secured a payment aggregator (PA) licence from the Reserve Bank of India, enabling it to expand its merchant payments operations — a potentially significant growth area given Amazon's strong e-commerce footprint.

This followed an earlier approval for a prepaid payments instrument (PPI) licence.
Amazon Pay currently offers a range of services including UPI transactions, bill payments, and insurance premium payments. It has formed strategic partnerships with platforms like BookMyShow, MakeMyTrip, RedBus, IRCTC, and Kuvera to branch into ticketing, travel, and wealth management.
For the fiscal year ending March 2024, Amazon Pay India reported a 9.22 per cent rise in operating revenue to Rs 2,286 crore, up from Rs 2,093 crore in FY23.
The company also managed to narrow its losses by 39 per cent, bringing them down to Rs 911 crore from Rs 1,499 crore.
Meanwhile, the Payments Council of India (PCI) has urged the Prime Minister's Office to reintroduce the merchant discount rate (MDR) for UPI and RuPay debit card transactions, at least for large merchants. The proposal aims to address concerns around the long-term sustainability of digital payment providers.
Amazon Pay India CEO Vikas Bansal had previously told ET that reintroducing MDR is essential to ensure smaller players in the UPI ecosystem are fairly compensated for their services.

DA Hike update: Double celebration on Diwali as along with GST reform, Modi government may announce hike in...

New Delhi: This time on Diwali, the central government can bring a big gift for its employees and pensioners. While on the one hand, preparations are going on to receive increased dearness allowance (DA) and dearness relief, on the other hand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has talked about implementing GST reforms before Diwali. Its benefit will be directly available to the general public, traders and government employees. From which date will the new DA be implemented? In March 2025, the Union Cabinet approved a 2% DA / DR hike for more than 48 lakh central government employees and more than 66 lakh pensioners, which came into effect from January 2025. Now, employees and pensioners are getting DA and DR at the rate of 55%. According to the 7th Pay Commission, the minimum base salary of central government employees is Rs 18,000, and the minimum pension of pensioners is Rs 9,000. With 55% DA, an employee is getting a total of Rs 27,900, and a pensioner is getting Rs 13,950. How many times is the DA increased in a year? Every year, the government increases DA twice, once in January and the other in July. Now the next hike for July 2025 is expected to be announced in September. According to media reports, this time the DA may increase by 3%. If this happens, DA will become 58% and it can be implemented around Diwali. PM Modi has already announced the GST reform before Diwali Prime Minister Modi has recently asked the state governments to cooperate with the central government in implementing the proposed GST reforms. He also said that these reforms will be implemented before Diwali and the poor, middle class, and small and big traders will get its benefit. The PM said, 'We consider reforms a symbol of good governance. We aim to make life and business easier. That is why we are bringing next-generation reforms under GST. These reforms will prove to be a double bonus for the people this Diwali.' The 8th Pay Commission is also on the way In January 2025, the Central Government approved the 8th Pay Commission, but its official notification is yet to come. Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Chaudhary said in Parliament that the notification will be issued on time. This means that in future, more improvements can be seen in the salary and pension of the employees.

JP Nadda assures urea allocation to Andhra Pradesh to address shortage

Amaravati: Union Minister for Health, Fertilisers, and Chemicals, JP Nadda, on Monday assured Andhra Pradesh that 29,000 metric tonnes of urea would be allocated to the state by August 21 to address the shortage. He gave the assurance when Andhra Pradesh Education, IT and Electronics Minister Nara Lokesh called on him in New Delhi. Lokesh highlighted the severe shortage of urea amid the ongoing Kharif season and requested the Union Government to immediately allocate the required supply to support farmers. They also discussed other issues during the meeting. Lokesh also proposed the establishment of a Plastic Park to promote local industry and generate employment opportunities for the youth. On educational infrastructure, Lokesh discussed the establishment of the permanent campus of the National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) in Visakhapatnam, noting that 100 acres of land have been identified for the project and urged necessary actions for its development. The minister further briefed the Union Minister Nadda on the progress of various development works over the past 14 months under the coalition government and sought central support for pending projects. He emphasised the need to expedite key initiatives like the Polavaram Project and the development of Amaravati as the state capital, which are critical for the state's growth and infrastructure. Lokesh also met Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri to discuss fast-tracking critical projects in the state and strengthening collaboration on energy security and welfare. The state minister strongly pitched for the BPCL refinery-cum-petrochemical complex at Ramayapatnam, Nellore district, a long-standing promise under Section 93(4) of the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014. The Rs 95,000 crore project, coming up on 6,000 acres, is expected to generate over 5,000 direct jobs and accelerate industrialisation. Lokesh underlined that the move would create local jobs, encourage MSME partnerships, and strengthen maritime infrastructure along Andhra's coast. On the welfare front, Minister Lokesh highlighted Andhra Pradesh's Deepam 2.0 scheme, which provides free LPG cylinders to eligible families, empowering women and BPL households. The state is working to integrate Deepam 2.0 with the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), ensuring wider coverage and efficient delivery, thereby improving health outcomes and reducing indoor air pollution. The Andhra Pradesh government also requested continued Central support in advancing investments, faster clearances, and partnerships in the energy and maritime sectors.
