The shocking scandal of American Apparel 'cult' unraveled in new Netflix doc

Metroa day ago
American Apparel is under the microscope after Netflix dropped a new documentary delving into the scandal behind the scenes at the popular clothing brand.
Last week, the streaming giant left viewers in a state of astonishment by their programme Poop Cruise, which told the horrifying real-life story of passengers who were stuck on a cruise without working toilets for days.
Now, the platform has released the next instalment in its Trainwreck documentary series – The Cult of American Apparel.
Directed by Sally Rose Griffiths, the new one-hour documentary looks to 'reveal the sinister side of the brand', diving into the rise and fall of the once-popular clothing retailer.
Behind the all-American noughties image, the programme paints a picture of a breakneck and sometimes toxic workplace culture, under the leadership of CEO Dov Charney.

As one interviewee says in the documentary: 'It was a fashion cult and Dov was the leader.'
After founding American Apparel in 1989 while still a student at Tufts University, Charney dropped out to pursue a career in fashion full-time.

The now 56-year-old's time at the company came to an acrimonious end when he was sacked in 2014 amid allegations of sexual harassment and abuse. He has denied all wrongdoing.
Described as a 'flamboyant, Canadian-born, LA clothing entrepreneur', the initial impression of Charney is as a man determined to combat the rise of the sweatshop with ethically made clothing.
The Netflix documentary features footage, research and firsthand accounts from former employees. Audio snippets feature Charney calling employees 'fool of the week' and other verbal attacks.
In addition to accusations of a hostile workplace, Charney has faced multiple accusations of sexual harassment from former female employees. Charney has repeatedly denied all allegations.
In the documentary footage, he's seen speaking about sexual experiences with employees at the time. It also shows a video of Charney walking naked in front of two female employees.
'It was definitely an open secret that Dov was sleeping with the employees,' Carson, a former American Apparel worker, tells the Netflix cameras.
The Netflix documentary claims that these cases were dismissed in court due to confidentiality agreements that employees had signed.
The American Apparel board eventually launched an investigation into Charney's behaviour and first suspended him for 'alleged misconduct and violations of company policy', before subsequently firing him in 2014.
In a statement to Entertainment Weekly regarding the documentary, a spokesperson for Charney said that in spite of the Netflix programme's narrative, 'Charney has never been found liable for any misconduct — sexual harassment or otherwise — by any judge, jury, arbitrator, or independent investigation.
Dov Charney still works in fashion, having founded the clothing manufacturer Los Angeles Apparel in 2016.
Charney has said that a Los Angeles Apparel store will be opening in New York later this year.
He has also worked alongside Kanye West and his Yeezy brand. Rolling Stone reported that Charney printed West's controversial White Lives Matter t-shirt.
Celebrity Net Worth reports that Charney is worth $500,000 (£366,000) – although that is not a verified number and there are no public records of his exact personal finances.
The statement continued: 'Unfortunately, the Netflix documentary grossly misrepresents the story of American Apparel and Charney, relying on paid actors to emotionally restate long-disproven allegations.
'No credible insiders — including Charney himself — participated in the production. One can only hope the full, unvarnished story of American Apparel and the forces behind its downfall will one day be told.'
American Apparel became known for its cheeky ad campaigns, which often included young women in provocative poses. An interviewee in the documentary described the ads as 'basically softcore porn'.
The brand championed wardrobe basics and embraced the indie sleeve aesthetic, while also promoting itself as a sustainable option, with the tagline 'Ethically Made — Sweatshop Free'.
However, as times and fashions have changed, American Apparel fell out of favour. The company filed for bankruptcy in 2015 and 2016.
It was bought in 2017 by Canadian sportswear manufacturer Gildan Activewear. The new owners closed all 281 stores and relaunched American Apparel as an online-only brand. The website claims American Apparel is 'committed to leading ethical and sustainable practices'.
Given that the documentary currently sits at the second spot on the top film ranking on Netflix, it's clear that subscribers are tuning in. They're also been sharing their reactions on X, with many saying it brought them back to being regulars at the stores in their heyday.
@itsMarciaAgain wrote: 'Watching this American Apparel documentary I vividly remember shopping there esp when I visited Miami. What a time!'
@tiffnotjustany added: 'Omggg the American Apparel era… You just had to be there!' More Trending
Meanwhile, @justfaith___ and others agreed the documentary was a crazy watch, writing: 'American Apparel being a cult is news to meeee.'
@ndulceee added: 'That American Apparel documentary was crazy!' @MsJah_ echoed: 'The cult of American Apparel on Netflix. Crazy.'
Metro contacted Dov Charney for further comment.

I explored London's hidden island that's only open twice a year – it felt like a Californian escape

And tickets to visit are free TREASURE ISLAND I explored London's hidden island that's only open twice a year – it felt like a Californian escape Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) HIDDEN away from a bustling town centre in Zone 4 of London, I discovered an urban oasis that felt more like California than the UK. Eel Pie Island, located in Twickenham, has an illustrious history. Originally, the tranquil spot was thought to be a monastic site before later transforming into a popular day-tripper spot. Then, in the 19th century, it became a popular resort with steamboats and the Eel Pie Island Hotel. When the hotel later closed in 1967, the island became a hippie commune and evolved as a creative community. Today, the island still boasts marks of its past, while the people who live there include a number of artists. It's one of London's best-kept secrets as it is only open to the public twice a year. And this past weekend I wandered over the footbridge that separates the island from the mainland, to explore the jungle on the island. Full of giant palm leaves looming overhead, the island doesn't take too long to explore and can be done in just an hour. And standing at the entrance way to the island, I felt like I was exploring Little Venice in Los Angeles. To get to the artists' workshops, I followed a meandering path taking me past wood-panelled homes - many decorated with enamel signs, American-style mailboxes and odd treasures. 'I tried out the Race Across the World Experience in London' The names of places also fitted the Californian vibe with names including 'Palm Beach', 'Copper Beach' and 'Love Shack'. Reaching the end of the path is an operational boatyard like felt something out of a movie. On the other side of the slipway is where you'll find the workshops of the island's 26 artists, selling a range of art, sculptures and ceramics. The workshops are all found nestled in the thick greenery and are surrounded by random abandoned items like water fountains and traffic cones. Whilst essentially a junk yard, the eclectic items mixed with the jungle felt more like a set from Pirates of the Caribbean. 8 Full of giant palm leaves looming overhead, the island doesn't take too long to explore and can be done in just an hour Credit: Instagram/@secretlondon 8 There are many wood-panelled homes on the island - many decorated with enamel signs, American-style mailboxes and odd treasures Credit: Alamy 8 The island is home to 26 artists, selling a range of art, sculptures and ceramics Credit: Cyann Fielding It is worth noting, however, that all the workshops are rather snug and may require some shuffling around other people to see all the items available for purchase. On the plus side, though, some of the workshops sell handmade tipples too, like Pimms, for just a fiver. You can explore the island and workshops for as long as you like on the day you have a ticket for, but everything can be visited in just an hour if you wish. Tickets to visit the island are also free. It takes less than 25 minutes to reach Twickenham via train from London Waterloo, and then Eel Pie Island is roughly a 10-minute walk from the station. After exploring the island, you can venture back to Twickenham high street, which boasts a number of independent shops and vibrant pubs. There is also a hidden island in the English Channel that had an exotic climate and some of the best sunsets in Europe. Plus, the 'secret' UK island surrounded by the country's deadliest footpath. 8 To me, it felt like wondering around Little Venice in Los Angeles (pictured) Credit: Alamy

McDonald's fans just learn about 'most unique' venue in 'Medieval castle'

People have been wowed by this McDonald's in a Medieval castle that looks like it is straight out of the Shrek films, and it is one of many unique branches around the world People are only just realising that there is a McDonald's that looks like a huge medieval castle - and fast food lovers are keen to visit the unique spot. When we travel abroad, many of us like to try out the local cuisine and avoid food spots that we can easily get at home. But, often, some of our favourite brands offer different menus we wouldn't be able to try at home. While we all know what McDonald's restaurants looks like, the menus vary by location to reflect local tastes and traditions - and there are a few which look nothing like the other eateries. The biggest McDonald's restaurant is in Orlando, Florida, and some fans believe the "poshest" chain is in Long Island. In New Zealand, there is a McDonald's where food is served from an abandoned aeroplane, plus there is a floating McDonald's service in Germany. ‌ Recently, fans have discovered a rather spectacular McDonald's in Goshen, Indiana, located in what looks like an entire Medieval castle. ‌ The unique spot can be found at Gallops Truck Stop, and it isn't just a McDonald's. The enormous structure, which opened in 2014, also boasts a Subway, a mega-sized convenience store, and 11 showers. This McDonald's is located just north of Goshen at the intersection of US Highway 20 and State Highway 15 between Middlebury and Elkhart. Owner Harpreet "Monte" Singh, who operates multiple truck stops under the Gallops brand, previously told Goshen News how he has always been fascinated by regal-looking buildings. He said: "I wanted to do something new. It was a concept that came in my mind and I just wanted to work on it." Many people are only just learning that the McDonald's exists after seeing clips shared on social media. @amberstellll posted a clip of the fast food fortress on TikTok, leaving people amazed. One person commented: "Best McDonald's I've ever seen." "Only in America," commented another. "This is how I imagine McDonald's in the UK," joked an American. One other pointed out: "Literally that restaurant from Shrek 2 with the medieval meal." Agreeing that the McDonald's looks like it could be in the Shrek films, another said: "This is exactly how it's like in Far Far away." ‌ Another agreed, writing: "That's where the fairy his mother got the medieval meal." "I'll have the medieval meal," commented one other. "Mcdonald's in random 90s/00s locations hit different. they don't build them like this anymore," commented another. Thriller hailed 'one of the BBC's best shows ever' back for season 3

Thriller fans are in for a treat with reports the BBC is bringing back a Bafta-winning show for a third season. Jimmy McGovern's series Time is poised for a return, with filming set to get underway for new episodes which could air on BBC One in 2026. The first series, which aired across three episodes in 2021 and was set in a men's prison, won a Bafta for best mini-series, with actors Sean Bean and Stephen Graham getting trophies for their respective roles as inmate Mark and prison officer Eric. A second series followed two years later, with Bella Ramsey (Kelsey), Tamara Lawrance (Abi) and Jodie Whittaker (Orla) leading the cast in female-only jail. According to reports, the planned third season will be set in a young offenders institution, which is said to be a 'coincidence' after Stephen's recent success in Adolescence. 'The parallels between the new show's central topic and Netflix's recent hit, Adolescence, are obvious, but entirely coincidental,' a source told The Sun. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video However, it's suggested despite the similarities of dealing with 'adolescent offending and its consequences', the new Time episodes 'would most likely have gone down this path anyway' even if hadn't been for Adolescence's huge success. The insider added: 'But it is certainly a theme which will prove highly immersive for audiences who have already been introduced to the world of young offenders through Adolescence.' Meanwhile, casting is reportedly yet to be decided, but the source said 'the lead roles are guaranteed to be sought after'. The BBC has declined to comment on the reports. Fans will no doubt be thrilled at the prospect of another story from writer Jimmy, with viewers previously hailing the show as among the best the BBC has produced. On Google, fan David Roberts wrote: 'Gripping, dangerous, insightful, insidious, harmful, touching, cruel, mesmerising, thought provoking, challenging to watch, detailed characters, real, moving, family centred, gritty, life affirming!' Another viewer, James Goldman, added: 'I'm pretty sure this is the best programme I've seen come out of the BBC ever.' 'Time is easily the best TV I've watched in a while,' agreed Penny Griffin. 'With such powerful storytelling and beautiful acting, I honestly cannot think of a flaw.' More Trending And Keith Cairns wrote: 'One of the greatest programmes I've ever seen. Riveting and superb acting.' Others praised season 1 duo Sean and Stephen for their 'magnetic' performances, while the second series has been described as a 'triumphant continuation'. Hopefully a third season can rise to such lofty heights! View More » Time is available to stream on BBC iPlayer. Got a story?
