Dubbed one of the department's more "unconventional decrees," the revamped policy mandates that teachers demonstrating poor academic performance in plain areas over the past two years will be compulsorily transferred to schools located in the state's challenging hill regions.
This measure is widely viewed not just as a disciplinary action but also as a strategic redeployment for those deemed to have "damaged the future of children" through ineffective teaching. The underlying philosophy ensures every teacher contributes meaningfully to student success.
"The 2017 Transfer Act previously governed all employee transfers, but the Education Department has now drafted a specific new policy tailored exclusively for teachers," Uttarakhand Education Minister Dr. Dhan Singh Rawat told the TNIE.

Kerala's state-run schools will soon reward students with 'grace marks" for developing reading habits, starting from the next academic year, State General Education Minister V Sivankutty announced on Wednesday. In a Facebook post, the minister said a dedicated period would be allocated for reading books, newspapers, and related activities as part of the initiative. 'Grace marks will be awarded from the next academic year to children who engage in activities that promote reading habits," Sivankutty said. The programme will cater to students across all school levels. For those in grades one to four, weekly sessions will focus on age-appropriate reading activities. Students in grades five to twelve will participate in similar sessions, with a focus on newspaper reading and follow-up exercises, he explained. To ensure effective implementation, teachers will be given training, and a handbook will be prepared to guide the reading-related activities. Sivankutty added that the Education Department is also considering the inclusion of a reading-focused segment in 'Kalolsavam," the state's annual school arts festival, to further encourage literacy and reading engagement among students. In a Facebook post, Sivankutty clarified that the figures cited by the Centre actually refer to Multi Grade Learning Centres (MGLCs), which were launched in 1992 under the District Primary Education Programme (DPEP). These centres, he explained, could not function as schools after the implementation of the Right to Education (RTE) Act, prompting their phased closure. Gujarat Education Department relaunches nine upgraded websites for public access
Gandhinagar: The Gujarat government on Wednesday relaunched nine upgraded websites under the Education Department. The initiative was led by Higher and Technical Education Minister Rushikesh Patel, with Minister of State for Primary, Secondary and Adult Education Praful Pansheriya gracing the occasion. Developed at a cost of Rs 50.11 lakh, the revamped websites are designed to provide citizens and students with swift and convenient digital access to key information such as education-related resolutions, policies, circulars, scholarship details, government schemes, and the latest initiatives in the sector. Speaking at the event, Minister Rushikesh Patel said the project aligns with the Viksit Bharat@2047 and Viksit Gujarat@2047 vision, highlighting the state government's priority to strengthen digital infrastructure for governance and service delivery. "These websites will ensure that vital education-related information reaches the public quickly and transparently," he noted. Minister Praful Pansheriya added that the upgraded portals will make details of scholarship programmes, state education policies, and new initiatives easily accessible to students and stakeholders, promoting greater inclusivity in the dissemination of information. The nine websites relaunched today include the portals of the Commissioner of Higher Education, NCC Directorate, Directorate of Primary Education, Directorate of Continuing Education and Literacy, State Examination Board, Gujarat Institute of Educational Technology, Gujarat State School Textbook Board, and the Gujarat Council of Educational Research and Training. In the 2025–26 Gujarat state budget, state Finance Minister Kanu Desai has earmarked a substantial Rs 59,999 crore for the education sector. Among the key allocations are Rs 2,914 crore for the Mission Schools of Excellence (upgrading 25,000 classrooms), Rs 1,250 crore for the Namo Lakshmi Yojana, Rs 782 crore for RTE (private school admissions), and ₹250 crore for the Namo Saraswati Science Scheme benefiting approximately 2.5 lakh students. Additional investments include Rs 617 crore for nutritious midday meals, Rs 175 crore for AI labs in technical institutions, Rs 100 crore for the newly proposed Gujarat Institute of Technology (GIT), and funding for scholarships, smart classrooms, and recruitment of 22,000 teachers, reflecting a broad-based strategy to modernise education across the state.

Delayed relief to kin of martyrs: 31 cases filed
BENGALURU: Since many dependents of martyrs and ex-servicemen are still waiting for government benefits even after decades, the two Upa Lokayuktas on Tuesday filed 31 suo motu complaints—one for each district. This aims to push the state to deliver the promised support. A first-of-its-kind massive joint action was taken by the Upa Lokayuktas- Justice K N Phaneendra and Justice B Veerappa ahead of the 79th Independence Day celebrations. Speaking to TNIE, Justice Phaneendra, Upa Lokayukta-1, in charge of 15 districts, said the move aims to support families of those who sacrificed their lives for the nation, after receiving multiple complaints about martyrs' and ex-servicemen's families struggling to get their due benefits. Justice Veerappa, Upa Lokayukta-2, in charge of 16 districts, said, 'We are safe because of the soldiers who are shedding blood on the border. Despite laws being brought to facilitate certain benefits to them, neither have they been given land nor a site, which amounts to maladministration under the Karnataka Lokayukta Act, he said. The Upa Lokayuktas have fixed the responsibility to the Assistant Commissioners of all districts to ensure that all the reports are submitted by September 24. Further, the copies of the suomoto complaints have been marked to the Deputy Commissioners, and also to the Additional Chief Secretary of the Revenue Department. Upa Lokayuktas cited cases like Geetha B C, from Mandya, who hasn't received benefits 20 years after her husband's death, and N K Lalithambika from Tumakuru, who's been fighting for land promised to her 50 years ago.
