Madani adopted village and school initiatives exceed targets with private sector support
KOTA BHARU: The government's Madani Adopted Village and Madani Adopted School initiatives have gained significant traction among private companies, according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He revealed that the number of villages and schools adopted by private firms has surpassed initial expectations. Anwar noted that major corporations, including those with multi-billion-ringgit investments, have stepped forward to support rural communities as part of the programme. 'Initially, my target was only 300 schools, but private companies have adopted 1,000 schools nationwide, including in Kelantan,' he said during the closing ceremony of the Kelantan-level Program Madani Rakyat 2025. The event took place at Sultan Muhammad IV Stadium, with Kelantan Menteri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud also in attendance. The Madani Adopted Village programme seeks to reduce development disparities between urban and rural areas. It focuses on improving basic infrastructure such as water supply, electricity, roads, and internet connectivity in selected villages. Meanwhile, the Madani Adopted School initiative aims to narrow educational gaps between urban and rural institutions. The programme fosters collaboration between government agencies, educational institutions, and private firms to enhance infrastructure, academics, and student development. - Bernama

New road linking Meluan to Layar approved by Sarawak govt
SARIKEI: The Sarawak government has approved a proposal to construct a new six-kilometre road connecting Ulu Entabai and Ulu Entaih in Meluan, Julau, to Ulu Penebak in Layar, Betong. Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg announced the decision during the opening ceremony of the Nanga Lasi Bridge in Julau. He stated that the road would reduce travel time from Meluan to Betong and Kuching to approximately two and a half hours. 'This road will transform Meluan from a remote interior area into an accessible part of Kuching,' he said. Residents will now be able to travel to Kuching within two and a half hours and return the following day. The project will also help farmers transport agricultural produce to markets in Kuching more efficiently. Abang Johari estimated the construction cost to reach tens of millions of ringgit. Meluan Assemblyman Rolland Duat Jubin proposed the road, highlighting benefits for 2,500 longhouse residents, three primary schools, and a clinic. The project will also expedite surveys for indigenous customary land rights in the area. Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas supported the proposal during the event. Additional approved projects include the RM92 million Nanga Lasi/Balut/Suchong road upgrade and the RM80 million Jalan Lijan project. The RM150 million Jalan Nanga Entaih/Rh Sang Lasa, Kemalih project includes 13 connecting roads. A RM5 million plantation road is also part of the RM327 million total allocation. The newly completed 96-metre Nanga Lasi steel bridge replaces an old suspension bridge, improving safety and connectivity. Since its completion on January 16, the bridge has served 2,250 residents, linking Nanga Lasi-Balut and easing travel to Sarikei and Sibu. - Bernama

Asean reaffirms neutrality, sustainability, and unity amid global uncertainty
JAKARTA (Bernama-Xinhua): Member states of the Association of South-East Asian Nations (Asean) are striving to uphold neutrality, promote diplomacy, and accelerate sustainability efforts amid intensifying global tensions and environmental challenges, Asean Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn said on Friday. Speaking at the 58th Asean Day Celebration, held under the theme "Toward an Inclusive and Sustainable Asean Future" at the Asean Secretariat Office in Jakarta, Kao emphasised that Asean's principled neutrality and commitment to dialogue can serve as a stabilising force in a volatile world. "In uncertain times, we must remain a steady and stabilising force, offering space for honest dialogue, practical cooperation, and principled neutrality, where differences can be bridged and solutions be found," he said. "Even amid tensions close to home, we are guided by the belief that diplomacy and dialogue pave the way to a lasting peace," Kao noted. He said that beyond geopolitics, the region faces urgent environmental challenges. Climate change, natural disasters, and resource scarcity are already profoundly affecting Asean countries. In response, Asean is advancing several major initiatives, including long-standing cooperation on transboundary haze, the establishment of the Asean Centre for Climate Change in Brunei Darussalam, efforts to build a regional power grid known as the Asean Power Grid, and accelerating a renewable energy transition. "These reflect a growing resolve to confront the climate crisis together. Sustainability also encompasses economic resilience, diversifying supply chains, enhancing food and energy security, and building smart, green infrastructure that will support future generations," he said. "Asean cannot afford to treat sustainability as an abstract ideal or a future concern. It must be a concrete, urgent strategy embedded in everything we do," he added. Representing President Prabowo Subianto at the celebration, Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono reiterated Indonesia's commitment to strengthening Asean as a peaceful, resilient, innovative, and people-oriented region. He said that unity is key to Asean's strength amid current geopolitical rivalries, stressing that disputes must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy. - Xinhua
