Overview
On sale for nearly three decades, the Toyota Prius is the O.G. of consumer gas-electric hybrids. Revised in 2023, the current Prius PHEV bears little resemblance to the original, however, sporting a sleek profile and a fun-to-drive demeanor that was missing from earlier generations. The Prius PHEV's party trick is its ability to plug in and add enough juice to its battery for an EPA-estimated electric-only range of up to 45 miles, enough electrons for many drivers to commute on. Operating in regular hybrid mode, it can travel up to an EPA-estimated 600 miles before needing to refuel or recharge. Though its wind-cheating low roofline encroaches on headroom, it looks great and is a small tradeoff for its remarkable efficiency.

What's New for 2026?
Toyota gives the Prius PHEV the Nightshade treatment for 2026. Built off the XSE grade, the Nightshade Edition is available in three exterior finishes— Karashi, Wind Chill Pearl, and Midnight Black Metallic—then adds unique 19-inch black alloy wheels and blackout trim for the badging, door sills, door handles, and bumper inserts.

We'd pick the XSE, as it comes with items such as keyless entry, a power rear hatch, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and heated front seats. Those XSE goodies are in addition to the standard 8.0-inch touchscreen (you can upgrade to the 12.3-inch), heated steering wheel, and an assortment of safety gear. Upgrading to the Nightshade edition is an easy and reasonably affordable way to add a little exclusivity.

All Prius PHEV models come with a 160-hp 2.0-liter gas engine that pairs with two electric motors: one that powers the drive wheels and another that controls a planetary gearset to mete out the gas engine's grunt in a manner that resembles a continuously variable automatic transmission. The result is 220 horsepower–more horsepower than a base Mazda 3, a Honda Civic Si, or a Subaru Impreza. What a time to be alive. The Prius PHEV is a front-drive-only affair; however, Toyota may offer all-wheel drive as an extra-cost item in the future. If this is the case, then expect a so-equipped Prius PHEV to include an additional electric motor that exclusively powers the car's rear axle.

A lithium-ion battery pack gives the Prius PHEV an electric driving range of as much as 45 miles. During our testing of an XSE model, we managed 33 miles of highway driving on our 75-mph highway fuel economy route before the battery depleted and the gasoline engine had to step in. Charging from a typical 240-volt plug takes approximately four hours to replenish its 11-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, according to Toyota. Besides recharging via the normal plug, a set of roof-mounted solar panels can add a small amount of juice when the car is parked. Take the Prius PHEV out for a drive and those solar panels send power to accessory items, such as the air-conditioning system. Alas, the panels are not available on the lower-end SE and XSE trims—only on the XSE Premium.

The EPA hasn't released any fuel economy information for the 2026 Prius PHEV yet, but the 2025 model earned ratings of 50-53 mpg city, 48-52 mpg highway, and 48-52 mpg combined. Note that the base Prius PHEV SE is the most efficient trim as reflected by its EPA estimates. C/D's real-world fuel economy numbers are based on a mid-tier XSE trim. MPGe stands for miles per gallon of gas equivalent, an EPA metric that estimates PHEV and EV vehicle fuel efficiency.

Interior, Comfort, and Cargo
First Row: While there's plenty of legroom, headroom for drivers over six feet tall is tight. The wraparound dash is fitted with a sizeable center-mounted infotainment screen and an instrument cluster mounted directly in front of the driver that is, oddly, partially blocked by the steering wheel. The low dashboard can also be a hazard to the knees of the passenger.
Second Row: The seat cushions are comfortable, but headroom is tight here too, thanks in large part to the rakish roofline. Legroom is also at a premium, especially for a model that bills itself as a five-passenger vehicle.
Cargo Capacity: There's 20 cubic feet of cargo area behind the rear seats; folding them down opens to create 26 cubes. Though that sounds tiny, the trunk in the Honda Civic offers 15 cubic feet, and the Mazda 3 just 13 cubic feet. Chalk up a win for the Prius PHEV's hatchback design.

The Tacoma, a long-time favorite among off-roaders and urban weekend warriors alike, leans into Toyota's hybrid technology and a broad range of trims that run from work-ready to luxury-leaning. The Colorado, redesigned for 2023, doubles down on torque, towing, and value, aiming squarely at customers who want capability first and foremost. Here's a look at five major differences between these two trucks that could sway your decision. One of the clearest differences between these trucks is in what sits under the hood. Chevrolet keeps things simple with the Colorado: every trim comes with the same 2.7‑liter TurboMax engine. The benefit here is consistency-you get the same punchy engine no matter if you're in a base Work Truck trim or the off-road ZR2. It also keeps things straightforward for buyers who don't want to wade through engine options. Toyota takes a slightly more flexible approach. The Tacoma's SR5 and TRD Off-Road trims both come with a 2.4‑liter turbocharged four-cylinder, putting out 278 horsepower and 317 lb-ft of torque. Step up to the TRD Pro, which adds a hybrid setup to the drivetrain, and you get 326 horsepower and 465 lb-ft. It's worth noting that Tacoma's hybrid version has slightly lower towing ratings, capped at around 6,000 pounds, though torque delivery is strong and responsive thanks to the electric motor's instant power. Toyota also offers advanced off-road displays that show pitch, roll, and other trail data. Comfort levels are competitive in both trucks. The Colorado emphasizes wide, supportive seats and a more car-like driving position. Tacoma takes a step forward for 2025 with improved seat ergonomics and higher-quality materials, particularly in trims like the Limited and Trailhunter. In practice, the Toyota now feels less like a bare-bones work truck and more like a vehicle you'd happily drive daily. Finally, there's the question of cost. The 2025 Colorado starts at around $31,900 for the base Work Truck trim, with prices climbing to just under $50,000 for the off-road-focused ZR2. That's competitive within the midsize segment and reflects Chevy's focus on capability and value. The 2025 Tacoma comes in at a slightly cheaper starting price of $31,590 for its base SR trim. But where Toyota really pulls ahead is in long-term ownership value. Historically, the Tacoma has been one of the best trucks in America for resale, often retaining a higher percentage of its original price than rivals. Fuel economy is another consideration. The RWD Tacoma manages a combined 23 mpg between city and highway driving, while the RWD Colorado gets 20 and 24 mpg, respectively, for city and highway driving. As expected, all-wheel drive specs for both trucks perform slightly worse when it comes to fuel efficiency. The all-wheel drive Tacoma gets roughly 21 mpg combined, and the Tacoma comes in just under that at roughly 20 mpg. The 2025 Toyota Tacoma and Chevy Colorado represent two different philosophies of the midsize pickup. Chevy has carved out a niche as the torque-rich, tow-heavy option that offers a lot of standard tech at a competitive price. Toyota, meanwhile, brings choice-offering trims that range from budget-friendly to near-luxury, plus the first hybrid powertrain in the segment, strong fuel efficiency, and proven resale value. For buyers who prioritize towing, payload, and straightforward strength, the Colorado is the clear winner. For those who want variety, hybrid efficiency, and a truck with a reputation for lasting longer than its owners might keep it, the Tacoma makes a strong case. Microsoft cuts another 40 jobs in Washington state, continuing layoffs amid AI investment surge
Microsoft has laid off more than 15,000 people globally since May. These latest cuts are on a much smaller scale than those made by Microsoft in May and July, when it eliminated 1,985 and 830 positions in the state, respectively, as part of broader layoffs that impacted more than 15,000 people globally. Microsoft confirmed that these cuts are separate from the prior reductions. The company declined to provide details about the teams, roles, or regions impacted. 'Organizational and workforce changes are a necessary and regular part of managing our business,' a Microsoft spokesperson said in a statement. 'We will continue to prioritize and invest in strategic growth areas for our future and in support of our customers and partners.' The company said it is providing severance packages and outplacement services to affected employees, including career counseling and job search support. Microsoft noted that some laid-off workers have transitioned to other roles at the company. The layoffs coincide with record capital spending on AI infrastructure, with the company investing more than $30 billion this quarter alone, in part to expand capacity for training and running AI models. Rising capital expenditures have created pressure to reduce operating costs through workforce reductions. The ongoing layoffs have created tension inside Microsoft's workplace culture, with some employees expressing concern about job insecurity and what some see as an erosion of the more compassionate environment under CEO Satya Nadella. In a company-wide memo July 24, Nadella acknowledged the 'uncertainty and seeming incongruence' of cutting jobs while simultaneously making record investments in AI infrastructure, calling the layoff decisions 'among the most difficult we have to make.' 'We continue to hear from experts that Palantir maintains unique market positioning for monetizing AI technology amid a noisy, crowded, and hype-laden market, and the company's Q2 2025 performance further validates that sentiment,' Berger said. Palantir has long played a role as a key US government contractor, working with both the US military, those of allied countries like Ukraine, and partnering with new defense tech startups. The company solidified its relationship with the Pentagon during the quarter, striking new deals with the US Space Force and US Army, executives said during a conference call after the results.
