Is West Virginia done with winter weather for the season?
CLARKSBURG, W.Va. (WBOY) — After seeing frost advisories and even snow in parts of West Virginia on Wednesday, April 16, things are looking up for West Virginians who are ready for summer.
The StormTracker 12 Weather team predicts that Wednesday will stay chilly, but by Thursday, afternoon, spring weather is expected to return and stick around. Temperatures will remain warm for the rest of the week with highs in the 70s for the lowlands.
Weather forecasts are generally accurate about seven days out, but the National Weather Service NOAA Climate Prediction Center is indicating that it will likely stay warm for the next month.
Temperature outlooks released over the past week indicate that there is a decent chance of above average temperatures in West Virginia. For April 21-25, there is a 60-70% chance of warmer than normal temperatures across the Mountain State; for April 23-29 there is a 50-60% chance; and for April 26-May 9, there is a 50-70% chance, depending on where you live in the state. The same is true for most of the rest of the country.

NOAA Climate Prediction Center Outlooks predict the probability of temperature being above or below normal, not how much temperature is expected to deviate from the normal. Also, the predictions do not claim to be 100% accurate, so even if there is a 70% chance of warmer weather, there is still a roughly 25% chance of normal temperatures and a 5% chance of cooler than normal weather.
It is possible that West Virginia could see winter-like weather return after those outlook dates. In 2023, West Virginia saw record-breaking snow in May when up to 20 inches fell in some parts of the state.
However, the three-month outlook released in March predicted a 40-50% chance of above average temperatures in April, May and June, so although there might be a few chilly days mixed in, if the outlooks are accurate, there will be more warm days.

All of West Virginia under Air Quality Alert Thursday
CLARKSBURG, (WBOY) — Smoke from wildfires in Canada prompted an Air Quality Alert across West Virginia Thursday. The alert was issued by the National Weather Service early Thursday afternoon and will remain in effect until 10 p.m. As of 2:30 p.m., most of West Virginia and most of the Northeast had moderate air quality conditions, which can impact unusually sensitive groups. According to the alert, some areas of West Virginia may experience a period where air quality dips down to the 'orange' level, which is considered unhealthy for sensitive groups. No surrounding states have similar alerts. 'Explosion' reported during fire at Hamer Pellet plant in Elkins Parts of Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin were experiencing unhealthy air quality conditions, but only some parts of Canada were seeing air quality in the very unhealthy or hazardous range because of the smoke. The biggest impact West Virginia has seen from the smoke this week is a haze that has lingered across the Mountain State for a few days. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Will Canadian wildfire smoke spread to West Virginia?
CLARKSBURG, (WBOY) — Over the past few days, smoke from multiple wildfires in Canada has headed south, crossing into parts of the U.S. But will the haze make it all the way down to the Mountain State? Turns out, it already has. According to FireSmoke Canada, a website that broadcasts results from the Weather Forecast Research Team at the University of British Columbia, smoke from the wildfires in the upper part of Canada was officially in West Virginia as of Monday morning, albeit at low levels. Weather Service rehiring at offices left 'critically understaffed' by layoffs However, things are not expected to improve as we head into Tuesday. According to the forecast from Monday evening, the cloud of lower-level smoke is set to hover over West Virginia through Tuesday. On top of that, a more concentrated cloud is set to make its way north through West Virginia as the day goes on, with the most concentrated parts potentially reaching 60 micrograms of particulate matter per cubic meter, nearly double the national standard over a 24-hour period, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Levels during this time won't be hazardous to most people. According to the New York Department of Health, levels 51–100 have the potential to affect people with pre-existing conditions that make them sensitive to air quality, but everyone else should be unaffected. The StormTracker 12 team also said West Virginians may be able to see the smoke during sunset on Tuesday and sunrise on Wednesday. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
