August 25 is the last date for the withdrawal of nomination.
The vice president's post fell vacant on July 21 following the surprise resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, who cited health reasons for his decision. His term was to end in August 2027.
According to constitutional provisions, in case of a mid-term poll, the incumbent gets a full five-year term.

A person cannot be elected as the vice president unless he is a citizen of India, has completed 35 years of age and is qualified for election as a member of the
Rajya Sabha

A person is also not eligible if he holds any office of profit under the government of India or a state government or any subordinate local authority.
The ruling NDA has a comfortable edge in the vice presidential elections.
The vice president is elected by the members of the
Lok Sabha
and the Rajya Sabha, with nominated members of the Upper House also eligible to vote.
The 543-member Lok Sabha has one vacant seat -- Basirhat in West Bengal -- while there are five vacancies in the 245-member Rajya Sabha.
Of the five vacancies in the Rajya Sabha, four are from Jammu and Kashmir, and one from Punjab. The seat from Punjab was vacated after AAP leader Sanjeev Arora quit following his election to the state assembly in a bypoll last month.
The effective strength of both the Houses together is 786 and the winning candidate will require 394 votes, considering that all eligible voters exercise their franchise.
In the Lok Sabha, the BJP-led NDA enjoys the support of 293 of the 542 members. The ruling alliance has the support of 129 members in the Rajya Sabha, assuming that the nominated members vote in support of the NDA nominee, which has an effective strength of 240.
The ruling alliance has the support of 422 members.
Article 66 (1) of the Constitution provides that the vice presidential election shall be held in accordance with the system of Proportional Representation by means of the single transferable vote and the voting at such election shall be by secret ballot.
In this system, the elector has to mark preferences against the names of the candidates.
The vice president is the second highest constitutional office in the country. He serves for a five-year term, but can continue to be in office, irrespective of the expiry of the term, until the successor assumes office.

Vadra, 56, received Rs 58 crore as "proceeds of crime" in the land deal, the ED alleged. Special Judge (PC Act) at Rouse Avenue Courts, Sushant Changotra, on August 2 issued a notice to all 11 accused named in the ED chargesheet before taking cognisance of the prosecution complaint and has listed the matter for August 28. Vadra has been named as accused number 1, apart from seven companies linked to him and two directors of SGY Properties (formerly Omkareshwar Properties) named Satyanand Yajee and Kewal Singh Virk. There was no immediate comment from Vadra's legal team on the allegations made by the ED against the businessman. The case pertains to Vadra's company Skylight Hospitality (SLHPL) purchasing a 3.5 acre land in Shikohpur village in Sector 83 of Gurugram from Omkareshwar Properties (OPPL) at a price of Rs 7.5 crore in 2008. The ED took cognisance of a September 2018 FIR of the Gurugram police to file a money laundering case in December that year. The police FIR claimed the land deal was a "bribe" to Vadra's company (SLHPL) so that he could help OPPL in getting housing licence in the same village from the then CM Hooda, who was also minister of town and country planning, by his personal influence as he (Vadra) was the son-in-law of the then Congress president Sonia Gandhi . "He (Vadra) entered into a dishonest or fraudulent execution of deed of transfer containing false statement of consideration and thus acquired 3.5 acres of land," teh ED claimed. "Robert Vadra through his entity SLHPL has purchased 3.5 acres of land in Shikohpur village without making the payment at the time of registration of sale deed, and declaring that full and final payment has been made," the ED alleged in the chargesheet. It claimed the businessman issued a cheque of Rs 7.50 crore from his other entity named SLRPL (Sky Light Realty) to "misrepresent" the facts in the sale deed. "This cheque was never encashed and no payment was ever made by SLRPL at the time of execution of sale deed," the ED probe found. Vadra, as per the ED, created structures to "launder" the proceeds of crime generated out of criminal activities. It said the buyer in this case was SLHPL but the stamp duty was paid by the seller, i.e., OPPL. "The allegations in the FIR (Haryana Police) that Vadra has undue influence through the then CM of Haryana (Hooda) was evident from the fact that the financial capacity to build a colony in the absence of any financial details and documents were accepted by the officials of DTCP (department of town and country planning) at entry level for the only reason that Robert Vadra was the director of this company. "Moreover, the processing of file on the day of its submission by every official in DTCP in a single day and approving by the then CM of Haryana within five days clearly indicates the influence of Robert Vadra, where the government has to take such decision which have a cascading effect on the planning of the cities of Haryana," the ED said. It alleged Vadra acquired "proceeds of crime" worth Rs 58 crore as the land was sold to DLF for the said amount (Rs 58 crore). This was done by entering into a joint venture with DLF Retails Ltd on the basis of Letter of Intent (LoI) issued by DTCP on 3.5 acres of land owned by SLHPL. The ED alleged Vadra transferred the illicit funds to his various entities for purchasing movable and immovable assets apart from making "conspicuous" expenditure. The agency alleged Vadra gave "evasive" replies during his questioning and he put "all the onus on three deceased persons (his associates) named late H L Pahwa, late Rajesh Khurana and late Mahesh Nagar for acting on behalf of him". "However, no documentary evidences were provided by him to substantiate his claim," the ED said. It has furnished Vadra's statement in the chargesheet where he defended himself by saying that these transactions took place in 2007-08 and that he was a "novice" to real estate matters and dependent on his three associates (Khurana, Pahwa and Nagar), and whatever agreements were prepared were with their (three associates) understanding, experience and knowledge. "I didn't decide who should be representing or signing these documents, they were decided by late Rajesh Khurana," Vadra told the ED during his questioning in April. Vadra reiterated these matters were 18-year-old and he doesn't "specifically remember" these land deal transactions.

Patna DM writes to Bihar Deputy CM Sinha to submit his response on holding two EPIC IDs
The Patna District Magistrate (DM) on Sunday wrote to Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Kumar Sinha, asking him to explain why his name appears on two voter ID cards (EPIC) in different constituencies. The DM said Sinha's name is listed in the draft electoral rolls for two Assembly areas. One is Bankipur (Constituency No. 182), and the other is Lakhisarai (Constituency No. 168). Both voter lists were published during the Special Intensive Revision in 2025. The DM also noted that Sinha's name was on both lists even before this revision. However, the removal did not happen immediately. He contacted the Booth Level Officer (BLO), filled out a form, and took a receipt as proof. Sinha explained that he voted only from Lakhisarai in the last election and will do so again. He also said the deletion form he submitted was rejected for some reason. After the draft voter list was published, he raised the issue with the Election Commission of India (ECI). The ECI has given a one-month correction window before the final voter list is published. Sinha said those questioning the Election Commission do not trust the Constitution and are spreading confusion, which harms democracy. He asked Tejashwi Yadav to apologise, calling his allegations false and damaging. 'This is their jungle raj, BJP does not play such games. I neither commit age fraud nor insult any constitutional body,' Sinha said. The government has consistently conveyed its views and concerns to the Chinese authorities, emphasising the need for transparency and consultation with downstream countries. "The Government of India has taken note of reports about the commencement of construction of the mega dam project by China on the lower reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo (upper reaches of the Brahmaputra) River in Tibet. This project was first made public as far back as 1986 and since then, preparations have been underway in China," the MEA stated in response to an unstarred question in the Rajya Sabha. Live Events The MEA said that the government remained committed to safeguarding Indian interests in the region. "Government carefully monitors all developments relating to the Brahmaputra river, including plans by China to develop hydropower projects, and takes necessary measures to protect our interests, including preventive and corrective measures to safeguard life and livelihood of Indian citizens residing in downstream areas," the statement said. The Yarlung Tsangpo originates in Tibet's Jiema Yangzong Glacier near Mount Kailash, flows into Arunachal Pradesh as the Siang, becomes the Brahmaputra in Assam, and eventually merges with the Ganges in Bangladesh before reaching the Bay of Bengal. Any disruptions upstream could directly affect ecosystems, agriculture, and livelihoods across the entire region, Phayul reported. The project is situated in a seismically active and ecologically fragile part of the Himalayas. Environmentalists, quoted by Phayul, have warned that such large-scale infrastructure in this region could have devastating consequences, including disrupted river flows, loss of biodiversity, and increased flood risks. India and China have discussed such issues under the Expert Level Mechanism set up in 2006, as well as through ongoing diplomatic engagement. Singh highlighted that India has urged China to ensure transparency and to engage in meaningful consultations with downstream nations before moving ahead with any hydropower developments, Phayul noted. India has also pressed for the resumption of hydrological data sharing, which China has suspended during crucial monsoon periods in the past. The issue was brought up again during External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar's visit to China from July 14-16 for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Foreign Ministers' Meeting, according to Phayul. While China has promoted the dam as part of its renewable energy strategy, India remains wary that the project could allow Beijing to exert control over water flows in South Asia, a strategic tool with far-reaching consequences, Phayul reported.
