Metro Police seeks dogs for training
'We specifically require German Shepherds and Malinois breeds, preferably between the ages of 18 months to two years old. It is crucial that the dogs meet certain criteria to be considered for training within the police structure. However, if a dog does not meet the necessary standards, it will be returned to the owner.
'Your co-operation and contribution will be greatly appreciated and will go a long way in assisting the efforts of preventing crime in the dedicated police force,' said spokesperson for Durban Metro Police, Colonel Boysie Zungu.

Video: Durban bus crash leaves 23 injured as vehicle smashes into wall
Less than three weeks after a resident wrote and complained to the management of Campus buses about speeding buses along Rick Turner Road, a major accident left the community shaken after a bus full of university students allegedly lost control and slammed into a nearby vehicle yesterday afternoon. Berea Mail reports that 23 people were injured. According to witnesses, the bus was allegedly travelling at high speed and failed to stop, hitting a Volkswagen sedan. The vehicle was pushed into a boundary wall of a nearby property, causing it to collapse. Andrew Smith, who lives at the property, says he and his sister were not present at the time of the crash. 'I was out picking up my son from school,' says Smith. 'The neighbours called me to inform me that a vehicle and a bus had crashed into my wall. I'm grateful that nobody was home at the time of the accident.' Umbilo CPF chairperson Calvin Thomas says the bus and backie drivers were injured. He says students were injured in the collision. 'We have written several times to the bus company to inform them about buses speeding along this road. The latest was on July 24, a resident filed the complaints,' says Thomas, who called for speed-calming measures to be put in place. 'The speed limit on this road is 60km, but most drivers go past that. We have been asking for ways to slow down speedsters, but we were told no. This is a busy road; something needs to be done,' adds Thomas. According to ALS Paramedics, 23 people, including students, were injured. 'They suffered minor to serious injuries. They were transported to various hospitals in eThekwini,' says ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jameison. By 16:00 yesterday, the road was still closed to traffic. SAPS eThekwini district records thousands of arrests, firearm recoveries
MEN and women in blue in the eThekwini District made an impact in their crime-fighting efforts during July through increased visibility and reinforced public safety. Spokesperson for the eThekwini District, Captain Carmen Rhynes, said, 'Sixty suspects were arrested for murder, 74 suspects arrested for attempted murder and 106 nabbed for robberies such as robbery with aggravating circumstances, carjacking, cash in transit robbery, house and business robberies.' Also read: 4 tips to save yourself when being attacked She added, 'Detectives were also hard at work and a total of 46 suspects were arrested for rape, eight suspects arrested for sexual assault, and 568 suspects were arrested for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and assault common. On property-related crimes, 70 suspects were nabbed for cases such as burglaries at residential and business premises, stock theft as well as theft of and theft out of motor vehicles. 'The police members in our district also recovered 154 vehicles, 35 vehicles used in a commission of crime, 78 dangerous weapons, 146 illegal firearms and 1604 various rounds of ammunition. A large quantity of liquor, non-ferrous metal and drugs was also seized during the operations held in the district.' 'I commend the bravery, vigilance and professionalism displayed by our men and women in blue and our partners during these operations. As we are into August month, operations within eThekwini District will be ongoing, with the same focused commitment to eradicate crime and arrest dangerous criminals or those who do not adhere to law and order.' During Women's Month, Rhynes said that joint law enforcement 'Basadi operations' will also be ongoing throughout eThekwini District, focusing on hotspots and bringing more visibility in the prevention of crime by their women in law enforcement. Chatsworth drug operations: One arrested and drugs seized by Durban Metro Police

Image: Durban Metro Police / Facebook The Durban Metro Police Service arrested a suspected supplier and confiscated drugs with a combined estimated street value of more than R53,000 in two operations in Chatsworth this week. The Metro Police said members of the Metro Police Drug Team and Trio Crimes Unit carried out an 'intelligence-driven operation' at an identified target's premises under an authorised search warrant. 'A primary drug supplier was arrested and taken to Chatsworth SAPS on charges of dealing and possession of Mandrax, crack cocaine, and dagga.' The operation resulted in the seizure of 58 pieces of crack cocaine, 110 Mandrax tablets, and 36 containers of dagga, with an estimated value of R13 100. Units involved included Counter Narcotics KZN, the Metro Drug Team, the Metro Trio Team, Chatsworth Metro Police (AO teams), and the Chatsworth Detective Tracing Team. Issuing a warning to those involved in the drug trade, the Durban Metro Police stated: 'Durban Metro Police will continue conducting intelligence-led operations with zero tolerance for narcotics. 'Our team, working together with the Chatsworth Detectives Tracing Team, proceeded to the location and recovered a bag containing: 164 bags of crystal meth; 140 pieces of Mandrax; 100 cones of cocaine; and 10.69 grams of Cat.'
